Hit the brakes a bit but still great

Definitely more of a transitional episode but still full of great performances with the standout performances coming from Henry Winkler and Elsie Fisher. Only real complaint is that it was so damn short!

NoHo Hank is my Hero

"Thank goodness we were on that tour bus! You know, man, ...if not for that Groupon almost expiring...we'd all be dead men."

I know this is Bill Hader's show, and he has more than proved himself with it, but bringing forward new talents is also huge. Anthony Carrigan is just the highlight of every scene he's in 🤣

The show has taken a surprising dark turn this season. I think the most surprising part is that it is surprising that a show about a hitman might take a darker turn. Barry is likeable though, if not relatable. You still want to root for him. Though, if we are honest, at this point he has not only murdered multiple people, but that also includes police and witnesses.

All in all, one of the better shows by HBO. Once again I think its strengths rely on its cast. Bill Hader, Henry Wrinkler, Stephen Root and Anthony Carrigan are all phenomenal. Plus with many guest cameos.

Slow and Steady Wins The Race

Warning: Spoilers
Anything to do with Gene and Barry are my favorite bits this episode. For Barry, Mr. Cousineau is a constant reminder of his angst, guilt and depression concerning the ill-fated Janice. Barry's mental deterioration is still difficult to watch, but Hader and Winkler's performances make their dangerous interactions all the more intriguing. I wonder how Barry is going to handle their odd dynamic after Mr. Cousineau had the coohanas to hit him in the face?

At this point I feel really bad for Sally. Eventually all the pressure she is feeling from work and Barry seems like it will eventually cause her to explode. Even with everything going on in her life I still find this particular subplot the least interesting bit of Barry in Season 3.

Fuches finding a slice of heaven compared to Barry living in his own guilt-ridden hell is an interesting dynamic. Even with Fuches undeservingly living a slice of heaven, it doesn't seem like it will be enough to keep him from yearning for what he feels owed from Barry.

Noho Hank and Christobal's love for one another is the chain that is eventually going to link everyone together and cause abrupt chaos and I can't wait to see what the outcome is.

Overall, Ben Mendelsohn is slower in pacing and does a solid job setting up future conflicts to come.

Awesome Performances

I know Barry episodes are short but this one felt SO short (it's 5 minutes less than usual) and there was a lot of elements building up but no real catharsis could be reached in the short time of 25 minutes. It's a great episode with all the usual Barry goodness... but it mostly leaves me waiting impatiently for next Sunday.

Things get interesting

Love the pacing of this episode as it starts building the drama. We watch our characters realising what is happening to them and where the fit in the story. This may be the episode that finally hooked me.

S3.E3 - Gene And Fuches [8.6/10]
panagiotis199319 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S3. E3) My Reaction / Review for Barry Season 3 Episode 3 ''ben mendelsohn'': Episode 2 was good and I gave it a rating of 8/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So Barry found for Gene a role to play? That's awesome but Gene doesn't seem to be very excited. Fuches is now a farmer? That's funny. Right now Gene has no other option but to do everything Barry says and that sucks, its like he is a prisoner. No matter what Barry does, the relationship between him and Gene is destroyed. Fuches is mad at Barry, these two have such a complicated relationship. Overall this was a really good episode and made me excited for what comes next. My rating is 8.6/10.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Warning: Spoilers
This is still a good show with good moments and writing. I just feel as though the tone shift isn't what I signed up for when I started this. I enjoyed the silliness mixed in with the dramatic, intense moments. This season feels devoid of any of the lighthearted moments that still made you kinda like Barry. I get it, he's done horrible things and is not a good person, but I also kind of accepted through watching this show that I knew that but still wanted to root for him in a twisted way. It's fiction, you know?

I'm not really sure how they continue this show if they're making Barry to be a joyless, soulless monster. It was more fun when you saw the duality of his personality. Cold hearted killer on one side, vulnerable, goofy quiet guy on the other. It's those lighthearted borderline wholesome moments balanced with the insane dramatic moments that drew me to the show. Now I just don't even want to watch him on screen anymore, I don't root for him at all. That leaves me wondering how they continue this show past this season once the storyline with Mr. Cousineau ends. If he kills off Gene/Gene dies because of him, I don't think it'll work the same. His relationship with Sally is not fun to watch anymore either, the whole show is just a bummer right now. I'm not having fun like I used to watching this show.

walter white

Warning: Spoilers
A real dark turn season 3 has become. I don't know if the devastating impact of the pandemic had a marked influence in the minds of the writers as they had a longer than usual prep time for season 3, but it's really hard to be empathetic with Barry as he exercises a brutal grip on Gene and his family (son and grandson to be precise).

Is Barry turning into Walter White or what I don't know. Is Barry beyond the point of no return who knows.

What's left of the relationship between Barry and Gene one may ask.

The themes of domestic violence are brutal and one wonders what will become of Sally and Barry.

3rd Season..
tenyuuh13 May 2022
I'm getting more bad vibes that this show is going downhill with each episode this season. I hope they prove me wrong. It's like they painted themselves in a corner and can't quite figure out how to get out of it with their show intact. Maybe that's the point...3 seasons only and Barry goes down in flames.

Weakest episode in the franchise so far
mooveephantom18 May 2022
I don't know, the tone was just completely off. For the most part this episode didn't work dramatically or comedy wise. These first three episodes have really tested my love for the show. Barry is just acting too creepy and unlikeable. Yes we get, he's mentally unstable and is a killer. But it has crossed into a weird territory where the characters could finally lose all sympathy from the audience. I'll be patient and wait to see how it progresses obviously. Will give major credit to Henry Winkler for his acting, especially for his final scene on set of the TV show with Barry.

Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad episode at all, but the Hank and Bolivian stuff is just so boring. I know a lot of people love this character, but I just cannot stand him at all. I don't get the appeal.

I Just Wish This Was a 95% Comedy
truthbrarian9 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was laughing my butt off in the first 10 minutes of this episode! Somehow watching Fuchs skipping down a grassy Peruvian field with a shepherds crook, the folk music playing, the funniest thing I have seen this year. But there is always in this show, a grim reminder, you are watching a ruthless caged psychopathic animal waiting to leap out.

Finding out more about Cousinou's past was interesting, I think there is a great story there possibly, where he was this monster whos fame in the 80s got to his head and he was blacklisted for being a jerk or something like that. He isn't sure he deserves redemption. I have a feeling his outburst at the filming will actually impress people as this show loves playing around in irony's muck.

I don't know what these alt-right chuds are talking about in the comments, I LOVE Elsie Fisher in her brief scenes so far, she's got that natural heart and soul kind of performing I have only seen in Kate Miccucci. I think she would be great as Raven in a Teen Titans movie or maybe Batgirl. Keep working Elsie I think you're going to be a star!

My problem with the show and this episode is that Barry is written too evil and too grim this season. Rather than consider a funny path around the Peruvians vs. Chechens like would've been done in Season One, its just "be John Wick for me". This plot took 10 minutes of the show making it roughly a 60% comedy.

Why can't Barry just be a hit man, assassin, or someone who is like Dexter who has to cover up disposing of a body? Why is Barry a horrific mass killer who is too revolting to root for in any way? That isn't to say he really does this mass murder next episode but for me even bringing it up as a possibility is just depressing.

Barry should just be quirky like this movie Grosse Pointe Blank. I don't want to have admit to friends I enjoy a show where each season has a genocide. I know the writers know what they are doing so they won't ruin the show, but I hope they won't have him kill 10 people again or that will force me to give up on this. Right now Barry is teetering on the edge of being needlessly grimdark.

Hughes is back and he wants revenge!
moritzherz16 April 2023
Barry and Mr Crusoe kind of made an aggreement but they still are not best friends. That will never change because Mr Crusoe cannot for give Barry for killing Janice.

Meanwhile Hughes is now a farmer out of America. The scenes with him where great and funny. He calls Barry and gets upset that he is still free and may even working together with Mr Crusoe. He throws his phone and I think we will see more of him in the next episodes.

The creepy guy hires Barry for a job although Barry killed a lot of his guy last season, but meh all forgiven and forgotten.

This season is until now very entertaining and I hope it will not loose that!
