Warning: Spoilers
Even though it is NCIS and knowing the nearest friends of the mains never are the real villans, didn't see this one comming.

And Jess and Palmer, well... Palmer can use the night out without painting ;)

The ship

Warning: Spoilers
Great episode not that bothered about the crime it self just wanna see my ship was thinking Jess and Torres would be it. Never expected Jess and Jimmy but I could see it, why would Jess not ask Jimmy to be her plus one I think someone has a little crush and I'm all for it maybe we'll get to see a more softer side of knight.

Mystic River

Warning: Spoilers
Fans of the book and movie Mystic River will recognize the plot. A young Aiden Parker and his friend got caught committed stealing hubcaps and while Parker grew up to be a law enforcement officer his friend grew up to be a criminal who reformed himself to be a store owner much like Sean Penn's character in Mystic River and his relative ended up murdered.

Who knew Parker was deeper than a pile of pasteries?
laughterweb18 March 2022
Well the writers finally figured out a way to give the new guy some much needed depth. Great! Parker has some big shoes to fill, and in past episodes, filling them with pastries just made him look like a clown. Now the writers are giving him some much needed depth by tying his past in to this episode. Hope to see more character development as the series progresses. I'll admit I used to watch NCIS mostly for Gibbs, but I have hope the writers and cast will continue to produce quality episodes, like this one, in his absence.

The growth of Alden Parker's character (well-done)
hindsonevansmike6 February 2024
Gary Cole's acting skills are steadily being stretched; this trip down Parker's Memory Lane - back to a mis-spent youth in Philadelphia.

Excellent plotting, linking dead sailor to wildlife to druggie going straight to inter-agency linkages and a GREAT view of the backstory of a young Alden Parker. His grown-up schooldays friend was well-played by an actor whom I didn't recognise.

This was a pleasure to watch.

One minor defect - they seem to have time travel to get (repeatedly) to and from Philadelphia (a one-way distance of 152 miles per Google). This minor w.t.f. Really doesn't detract from the excellent storyline about friendship and redemption.

Thick as Thieves

Warning: Spoilers
Not bad, but a lot of the developments here you could see coming from a mile away.

Also, how many shows is Kevin Chapman going to play the exact same kind of cop on?

Mystic River

Warning: Spoilers
Good show but complete parallel to the movie Mystic River. Including character Kevin Chapman as Doyle which is close to Boyle the Tim Robbins played. In NCIS Kevin Chapman is a market owner much like Sean Penn was in Mystic River. The scene where they find his nephew Sean is very similar to the scene where Sean Penn finds his daughter murdered. Also, the weapon used was involved in a crime many years earlier just like in Mystic River. Lastly, the connection between Parker and Doyle is similar to the connection between Kevin Bacon, the cop, and Sean Penn, the recovering criminal where both went their separate ways to live somewhat normal lives.

Tell me this was inspired by the movie Mystic River! Right?!? Great movie.

Good, but not great
harrykivi28 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Marco Schnabel, the writer of this episode, is the most interesting new writer of this series. While he has written some bland episodes ( like "Lonely Hearts"), he has also created some really complex mysteries ("No Vacancy" for instance). "Thick as Thieves" is a good episode, not one of Schnabel's best, but still quite remarkable in an unimpressive season.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great. The direction's solid, the music fits the scenery. Liked the acting too. Gary Cole is good, so is Kevin Chapman.

. The case is interesting for the most part and the characters are colorful. Quite enjoyed that one gets to know more about Parker in this story. Schnabel's humor hasn't always worked for me, but the narrative was this time suitably serious.

But...

. There are parts of the story that are agreed quite obvious. The identity of the killer wasn´t very hard to figure out. One look at that guy and I was sure that he's the culprit. Am not sure on Knight and Palmer hooking up as well, maybe it's a bit forced?

Overall, a solid episode.

7/10 HK.
