Once one of the biggest nights on television, home of such hits as Golden Girls, Saturday has become a scripted wasteland where cancelled series go to air their final episodes.
The CW may change that. The network recently reached an agreement with its affiliates to take over Saturday primetime starting next fall. Today, the CW unveiled its fall 2021 schedule, with new episodes of Whose Line is It Anyway? and World’s Funniest Animals.
“At this time it’s alternative programming,” the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said during a press call about the fall schedule Tuesday. “When we get to 2022, we will probably look at putting some scripted programming on but we have not fully fleshed that out, we’ve been more focused on 4Q of 21.”
He would not elaborate whether these would be CW originals or acquisitions. We have seen a handful of acquired scripted shows on Saturdays in the past decade,...

When it comes to odd-couple comedies, there are few premises that haven’t been tackled over the years — especially on CBS. From the short-lived “Partners” and “How to Be a Gentleman” to the crass “2 Broke Girls” and the actual “The Odd Couple” remake, the derived concept has solidified itself on the network with varying degrees of success. “Angel From Hell” is no exception, although it marks a departure from the Eye’s traditional multicam format. A single-camera comedy starring the likes of Jane Lynch and Maggie Lawson, the series once again attempts to pair the straight-shooter with the oddball muck-up.

It's hard to believe it's been 11 years since we first met big screen heartthrob Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) and his boys, Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), Eric "E" Murphy (Kevin Connolly) and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) on HBO's "Entourage." And, who can forget our favorite hot-headed agent, Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven)?! The eight-season series was filled to the brim with celebrity cameos, hot Hollywood nightclubs and a whole lot of partying -- and we loved every minute of it. While we finally get to see these boys back together on-screen in the "Entourage" movie on June 5, toofab is taking a look at what Vinny and his pack-mates have been up to since the show premiered over a decade ago in 2004. Grenier was probably best known for starring in the movie "Drive Me Crazy" before he nabbed his "Entourage" role. He later co-starred with Anne Hathaway in "The Devil Wears Prada" and directed two documentaries,...

2Nd Update, 4:40 Pm: Here is NBC‘s third and final comedy pilot order of the day for Ellen More Or Less (previously Formerly Fat Girl), written by Jj Philbin and executive produced by Jason Katims, who is behind NBC’s new comedy series About A Boy. The single-camera, from Universal TV and Katims’ True Jack Prods, is loosely based on the nonfiction book 10 Lessons From A Former Fat Girl and centers on an average-size woman who, after losing 100 pounds, begins reinventing herself in life and love. NBC gave the project, executive produced by Philbin, Katims and Michelle Lee a pilot production commitment in September. The pickup means that both high-profile single-camera comedy projects this season about a formerly fat protagonist have gotten a green light — Fox recently ordered Fatrick, which is already casting. For those counting at home, NBC has picked up 7 comedy pilots so far, plus series orders...

You would think having the top sitcom as a lead-in would guarantee ratings success for The Millers. Not necessarily -- just look at cancelled shows like $#*! My Dad Says and How to be a Gentleman. Will this new Will Arnett comedy be a hit or will it be cancelled after one season like many others? Stay tuned.
The Millers follows a local newsman (Arnett) who's been hiding his recent divorce from his parents. When they hear the news, his dad (Beau Bridges) leaves his mom (Margo Martindale) and they each move in with their kids. The rest of the sitcom's cast includes J.B. Smoove, Jayma Mays, Nelson Franklin, and Eve Moon.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart...

Chicago – There are very few recurring weak points in the CBS lineup. They’ve been dominating total viewers for years with mega-hits like “NCIS” and “The Big Bang Theory.” But there is one thing they haven’t been able to figure out — something to partner with “Tbbt.”
After failing miserably with shows like “Rob!” and “How to Be a Gentleman,” they gave up and just moved “Two and a Half Men” to Thursday nights. That worked and so now they’re trying to expand the empire by pulling the night’s big hits apart and launching two programs in between. Neither are good and one is horrible. Ah well. Maybe they can move “2 Broke Girls” to Thursdays too.

The better of the two new CBS programs this evening has also been one of the most reviled in new season previews. Meh.

Sorry Partners fans. If you were hoping that CBS might get around to releasing the remaining unaired episodes of the cancelled sitcom, you shouldn't hold your breath. The network has completely deleted Partners from their website.
Just last week, you could find video of full episodes, clips, promos, synopses, biographies, and show photos on the network site. All traces of David Krumholtz, Michael Urie, Sophia Bush, and Brandon Routh have been deleted.
While Partners wasn't a ratings success for CBS, it wasn't a huge flop either. Heck, NBC and Fox would love to have more sitcoms with Partners' numbers.
It's curious that the network would so quickly wipe out all traces of a show that ran for six weeks but in the past they've kept immediate failures (like How to Be a Gentleman and 3) on their website for months.

I have a bit of a logical issue with the following news story; not the news itself, but the logic behind the plot The Mentalist will be involved in and the character Mary Lynn Rajskub will be playing. I can’t decide if what I’m feeling is justified or if I’m just being picky. When it comes to entertainment, there’s a certain suspension of disbelief that is required to properly enjoy certain aspects of the medium. But there is a line that can be crossed where suddenly what is being presented to us on screen is so unbelievable that the entirety of the plot can collapse. I believe Rajskub’s character is part of one such line crossing.
According to TVLine, Rajskub is guest starring as a rehab patient whose roommate is murdered. Now, I have no problem with this as is. Let whoever is murdered be murdered.

"Made In Jersey" lives again ... sort of. CBS has scheduled already-produced original episodes to be burned off on Saturdays, according to Deadline.com.

CBS’ freshman drama Made In Jersey, which was pulled after two low-rated airings on Friday, is getting slotted on Saturdays. The network has scheduled Made In Jersey originals on Saturday, Nov. 24 and Dec. 1, at 8 Pm. Social media users are increasingly becoming good partners to TV, helping to spread the word about which series are critically adored and popular. But like every relationship, there are some negative aspects, too.
Unfortunately, networks using social media as inspiration for shows is one of them.
NBC recently ordered a pilot based on 24-year-old Emma Koenig‘s Tumblr account entitled, “Fuck! I’m in My Twenties,” which already spawned a book. The site features drawn images filled with sarcasm and insight about quarter-life crises. The show will follow a young woman in her twenties as she navigates her way in New York City. Sound familiar, fans of HBO’s Girls?
This announcement comes just two days after CBS ordered a comedy based on another Tumblr, and the source of inspiration for it comes from yet another twenty-something woman. On deck for this pilot is Lauren Bachelis‘ blog entitled “#hollywoodassistants.

As the 2012-2013 TV season kicks into gear it's time to ponder which show will be canceled first.
Will it be CBS's "Partners"? The series debuted softly with 6.6 million viewers tuning in and a 2.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Ok numbers, but not by CBS standards. Consider "How to Be a Gentleman," last season's new comedy from CBS. The show premiered to an audience of about 9 million people and had a 2.7 rating. However, it was quickly shuffled off to Saturdays where it was bested by "Two and a Half Men" reruns before being yanked completely.
Two NBC comedies are currently moving closer to the bubble. "Animal Practice" debuted after the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics to almost 13 million viewers. A few weeks later, it had 5.2 million viewers in its regular timeslot debut. Decent numbers for NBC, but the 18-49 rating for its timeslot debut on Wed., Sept. 26 was a 1.4. That doesn't bode well.

Not only do I want to tune in to New Girl and The Mindy Project, but I also want to check out ABC’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, which premieres Oct. 23. However, I’m curious about The CW’s Emily Owens, M.D., premiering Oct. 16, because star Mamie Gummer has impressed me so much on CBS’s The Good Wife (and as much as I hate to admit it, the seemingly similar Hart of Dixie is fairly charming).
Aside from this, there’s something else I...

It's the old "throw crap at a wall and see what sticks" philosophy of TV development. Each year, networks try their luck with a crop of new shows meant to be the next big thing. But rarely do they ever pan out. In fact, only 33% of the new shows that premiered last year came back for a second season.
WarmingGlow has the complete list which you can see below. This is exactly the reason I'm reluctant to get into new shows if I'm not sure they'll last. Fool me once with V, twice with The Event and three times with Terra Nova, and I'm ready to just throw in the towel and wait until some new show is in its 5th season before I start watching.
This is the full list. See any you think should have been renwed? I can't really say I do. Even the ones that were...

At 3 hours and 35 minutes, Saturday's Creative Arts Emmys lasted 3.5 times longer than "How to be a Gentleman" stayed on CBS last fall. It will only be two hours when it airs next Saturday, September 22 at 8:00 P.M. on Reelz Channel, but here's some of the highlights and stolen moments you won't be seeing on TV. 3 P.M. It's a record-breaking 103 degrees on the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre and the body count is one, as in one person has already fainted and there is still an hour...

After eight-seasons on the testosterone-soaked series about fame, fortune and hangers-on in Hollywood, Entourage came to a close last year, opening up the schedules of its cast for better or for worse. Since then, Adrian Grenier's shot Goodbye World, a indie comedy that could debut next year; Kevin Dillon fronted the short-lived sitcom How to Be a Gentleman opposite It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's David Hornsby, and Kevin Connolly appeared in Sebastian Gutierrez's under-the-radar drama Hotel Noir. In short, since the series' cancellation the Entourage boys are struggling to find their groove, save for Jerry Ferrara, who landed a role in the spring hit Think Like a Man and now may join the star-stacked ensemble comedy Last Vegas. Penned by Crazy, Stupid, Love scribe Dan Fogelman and Definitely, Maybe writer-director Adam Brooks, Last Vegas stars Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, and Kevin Kline as four...

Broadcast’s dog-and-pony shows in New York City are finally over, but the walk-up to the fall 2012-2013 lineup has only just begun. Before we start wringing our hands over Britney Spears’ emotional readiness to be a reality show judge, we have some knee-jerk reactions to what we saw and heard this week:
Biggest trend: Comedy explosion. There’s 29 sitcoms hitting the air this fall — and we’re not including Rock Center With Brian Williams. That’s an enormous number of couches, awkward dates and workplace misunderstandings. Tuesdays will be a three-network comedy traffic jam, while ABC and NBC will offload extra chuckles into Fridays.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
With CBS leading in viewers by the widest margin of any network in 23 years, the network has little need to refresh its line-up this year - especially with last season's successes like "2 Broke Girls" and "Persons of Interest" adding to a solid run of hits in recent years.
Yet it's not resting on its laurels, ordering six new shows and shifting four existing shows around the schedule to shore up its weak points, in the process teaming its two biggest comedies "Big Bang Theory" and "Two and a Half Men" on the one night.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen include cop drama "The Widow Detective", various comedies about twenty...

While there's been no official renewal yet for "Rules of Engagement" (Thu., 8:30 p.m. Et on CBS), neither has it been cancelled. It wasn't on CBS's Fall 2012 schedule, but they slotted it on Saturdays in Fall 2011, and the show never aired a single episode in that time slot. Instead, it played the reliable utility player and slotted into its current slot when "How to Be a Gentleman" crashed and burned.
As such, it's reasonable to expect the network will pick it up in that role again. Especially with the series only 13 episodes away from that magic 100-episode syndication mark. That means there's every chance that fans will get to see Audrey have her baby.
In this season finale, she learned the sex of that baby. Learning she was having a girl helped improve her spirits after the disastrous and accidentally last-minute baby shower Jennifer and Adam threw for her.

CBS and NBC would prefer that Madison Avenue forget them and a slew of other failed shows from this season. Though the show has been cancelled, CBS is bringing How to Be a Gentleman back to the schedule.
CBS pulled the sitcom from its Thursday night timeslot after two disappointing showings. The network switched it with Rules of Engagement, the venerable sitcom that had originally been scheduled for Saturday nights.
Rules ended up performing much better on Thursdays and Gentleman was pulled after one Saturday outing.
Nine episodes of How to Be a Gentleman were produced before the show was cancelled. CBS has scheduled a pair of unaired episodes for 8pm on Saturday, May 26th. The network is expected to run the remaining four installments on June 2nd and June 9th.
Here are the descriptions of the first two new episodes:

As many of our favorite TV shows wrap up filming for the season this week, their fates still hang in the balance. Networks won't finalize their 2012-2013 schedules until mid May at Upfronts in New York City, and until then, casts, crews, and fans of some shows will have to wait to hear whether they're coming back next year.
We've already explored the ABC bubble shows, so now it's time to visit the CBS fare. CBS has already renewed a large number of shows. Fans of "The Good Wife," "Blue Bloods," "CSI," "Hawaii Five-o," "The Mentalist," "Person of Interest," "Criminal Minds," "NCIS," "NCIS: La," "Mike & Molly," "2 Broke Girls," "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Big Bang Theory" can rest assured -- your shows will be back.
We can also pretty much count on seeing the return of "Two and a Half Men," provided negotiations with Ashton Kutcher continue to go well.

CBS’ Rules of Engagement is back. Again. On Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c. Where it used to be. Successfully. (Only to get punted for one newbie sitcom or the other.) And yet back it is, and big viewership will assuredly follow.
