Yes, we're familiar with the topic of Roswell. Same goes for Rendlesham and Area 51. Blue Book and MJ-12 -- ditto. Close encounters; a government cover-up; Disclosure. These too are discussed here as they are in numerous other documentaries on UFOs.
There are umpteen programs on Unidentified Flying Objects and Alien Abductions. What makes this one any different, you might ask? Not much. Same old rehash.
Specifically, what drew me to want to watch this was its stellar list of interviewees, of high-profile names within or at the periphery of ufology.
It turns out these are all very brief appearances. Almost each and every interviewee is interesting enough to merit his or her own full-length presentation, but all we get from them are clips -- screen time akin to the equivalent of soundbites. It's a bit like watching a 90-minute trailer.
It's what makes THE HIDDEN HAND a mere satisfactory documentary: namely, the rather incoherent manner in which it has been composed. One minute there's someone speaking about, say, plasma UFOs; the next, about military jets that were scrambled to try and intercept a UFO back in 1957. It goes on like this for the length of the entire program. It's a doc that's been put-together rather discursively. As such, it lacks depth, fresh insights, and is rather forgettable.
As an introductory overview of UFOs and the various side- and sub-topics related to it, I suppose this doc is adequate enough for abecedarians. But for those already acquainted with much of this material, there's nothing that really stands out to set it apart from the countless other documentaries of its ilk.
The title is in reference to ETs and the question of whether they have played an overall inconspicuous part in guiding humankind, and whether this ET presence is in modern times creating a gradual shift in human consciousness as our species slowly awakens to the possibility of their being in our midst, if not involved in human affairs at some level.
