The Last Light: So...........bored
Platypuschow28 August 2017
This Irish ghost story is somewhat of a bore, 85 minutes of very little actual activity and barely even any dialogue.

A lone construction worker ventures into an abandoned derelict care home to seal it up and prevent vandalism but discovers ghostly happenings within.

Trouble is very little happens and when it does it's done frantically and incompetently.

Saying that the film was made for a declared budget of little of £100 and that's outstanding! Regardless it is what it is and it is........a bit of a bust.

The Good:

Well made considering the budget

The Bad:

The "Encounter" moments are noisy, shaky cam, overly long messes

Recycled sound effects

Too many "Filler" scenes

So criminally boring

Ghastly

Some good scary moments but ultimately slow and predictable. Not good even allowing for limited budget.

An Irish Ghost Story

Not a bad movie, it would have improved immensely if they lopped off about 45 to 60 minutes of its running time. Genuine creepiness with some jump out of your seat scares. Not quite a "found recording" movie (e.g. The Blair Witch Project), but in the same very low budget category.

Tedious

I was bored beyond endurance and it took me 3 days to get through this film, most of which is so damn dark you can't see what's going on except when the handyman is wandering around with a lit match. Even then, you're mostly guessing.

This could have been a neat little tale except that it's too long and there wasn't enough imagination put into it. The setting is atmospheric enough, but too bad it wasn't used to its best advantage.

Would have made a STELLAR short film. Feature...doesn't quite make it. *Spoilers!!!*

Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a fabulous movie, and WOULD have been...had it been released as a short film, rather than a full-length.

Love the soundtrack, loved the countryside and the old building used in the film...incredible!

Quite confusing as to the abandoned building's purpose (hospital, asylum? It was never made even remotely clear,) but what lovely architecture!

Started out fantastic and I was really impressed. I don't care about gore, scariness, etc...I like a good, chilling ghost tale, and this movie did a good job delivering...until it became too drudging.

After the events that transpired, there was no way Robbie could NOT have realized he was dealing with supernatural events.

Little kids can't beat the daylights out of a man his size and be human.

Having MANY opportunities to escape the house (at that point with being roughed up by a creepy girl ghost and some creepy boy ghost screaming in my face) I'd have stayed in the light and gotten out any way, possible risking life and limb to do so.

But what does Robbie do? Continues through the house, not nearing any closer to the first floor and an easier escape, but instead, traverses the darkest and most dangerous parts of the house looking for a young hoodlum who, apparently, found himself in more trouble than he bargained for.

I can understand wishing to help the young man, Michael, he finds in the attic, but honestly, it slowed the pace, painfully extended what was a good story and dampened any enthusiasm I'd had.

The placing of the sister-in-law in the film was a nice touch, but as the movie drudged on, with far too much added in (for length I'm assuming) the impact of the tale, was seriously, adversely affected.

I'd LOVE to see this movie, edited to be no more than an hour, hitting all the key points it took too long to make at the unneeded length and you'd have one, unbelievably scary and awesome movie.

As bad as "I Spit On Your Grave"
michandgreg6 November 2015
I saw the cover and thought, "this looks pretty scary". I had never heard of this film but a friend asked about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot. From the start it was slow, boring and what acting you did see was horrendous; it only got worse from there. The "ghosts" were not in the least bi frightening. The jump out of your seat and scream, or "shock" scenes, literally made me laugh they were so poorly done. The cinematography was horrible, even jerky at times. I understand low budget, but compare it to "Insidious" or "Paranormal Activity" which were very low budget as well, this didn't make the cut, by far. This "film" should never have made it to the theaters let alone brought to video. 1 star is way to generous for this"movie".

From the song in the opening credits, I should've known not to watch this. It sets off how bad this is.

A Good Storyline, Without the Scares
texicanwife7 January 2017
I feel I'd be safe in saying that I am not the only one out there that has an eclectic taste in films, just as I have such in books. I watch a lot of cheesy, poorly acted films that still bring a great deal to the table. Such is the film I am going to review this evening.

The Last Light: An Irish Ghost Story NR/ 84 min's/ CC English 2011 Directed and Produced by: George Clarke Starring: JoL Crawford Peter Meehan Robert Render Vivian Jameson

This is a decent film as ghost story/supernatural films go. I understand it did win Robert Render an award at the Freak Show Festival in Florida. It is claimed to be "as scary as the Blair Witch Project". Don't hold your breath for that.

SYNOPSIS: Handy man, Rob, is hired to brick up an abandoned mansion. (This was actually shot on location, so look for the real deal here!) He is not alone in the old manse. Locked inside, he is forced to deal with the supernatural ghosts in order to survive. But not all who reside in the mansion are ghosts. In order to survive to get back to his wife, who is supposed to be packing for the belated honeymoon, Rob must go through a hellish nightmare and escape those who would keep him forever in the dark, decrepit building.

Will he survive?

This will keep you on your toes and waiting for whatever comes up in the next scene. Just don't expect talent, for the actors have none.

I give it Five Stars. (It has a great story line!)

And a big Thumbs Up!

You can find the film on Amazon.com, for $7.99 on DVD. It is also available to rent through Amazon for $4.99 -$7.99.

Absolutely AMAZING
glen-stewart939 July 2012
Okay so you go to the Cinema to see a film made with a VERY low budget you don't expect to be that pleased so you expect a not that great film... From the 1st scene I knew straight away that this was not going to be a poor film the quality, the scenery EVERYTHING was just right. It felt like a film you would see around the world but no this was a local film and I just cant believe that a small team with such a small budget managed to pull this off! I cannot imagine what quality of movie could be made with the millions of pounds budget big names spend... For a young crew I can see a very bright future for YFP (Yellow Fever Productions) and I look forward to seeing more movies by George Clarke and Robert Render!

Great ghost story
marilarue3237223 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm very fond of the old kind of scares. The creepy haunted mansion. The abandoned building that everyone is afraid of but no one tries to tear down. This movie was one of those kind of horror movies. If you're looking for blood and gore, this won't be your thing. But, if you go into it with an open mind of a good ghost story, you may just find a gem here.

That being said, it was kind of slow to start and some of the shaky camera work made me a little motion sick. I would have liked a tad more backstory of the house but, that was just me personally. Like, who are these kids? Who was the big man beating up the maid? It didn't make the movie any less good, it just would have added a bit.

Knowing how low the budget was, I think they did a fabulous job! I was glad there was an ending and it didn't just leave you hanging as some movies of this nature are prone to do. You know that Robbie, Viv, Jo and Micheal are now a part of the house. I was hoping for a happy ending but, who doesn't? And it was still a good ending. We don't always get happy endings, but it doesn't hurt to hope for them.

All in all, a great ghost story.

a nice little ghost story
illmade31 March 2016
A nice little ghost story. I can understand the bad reviews here and elsewhere, after all the American viewing audience has been reduced to the level of a twelve year old. If it's not a Marvel extravaganza Blockbuster, or another re-hash of Lucas's 40 year old trilogy , it's just not worth watching. Right? First it is not a American production so don't expect it to be a roller-coaster ride of thrills and effects, second it's low budget again don't expect it to be a roller-coaster ride of thrills and effects, and thirdly the people depicted are not Americans so don't expect them to act, talk or look like they are. The story telling is quite good, the atmosphere is quite good, the acting is quite good over all. If you're a fan of horror from Ireland, Scotland or Wales then you'll probably enjoy it, if you're not then you wont.

I wish comment directly w/other reviewers
berg-7453230 July 2020
I would love to ask the person who gave this a 1/10 and said it took him three days to get through it why they continued watching. In what world with freedom of choice would keep going back unless something was drawing you back. Some part of this film on some level showed something to make you continue watching. Ever never done anything that I would call tedious unless I had absolutely no choice. Bad movies are everywhere with streaming services popping up daily and the ability to pick thousands of movies for free why would you waste even one night watching crap. This movie is far from perfect and i wish I could scream "LETS GO" and be magically heard by those involved but unfortunately that is impossible right now. I saw enough to keep me interested and to continue watching. Doing the minimalist thing has problems and people involved didn't do themselves favors with how dark it is but to make this film the plot demands darkness so I'm not sure how else this could be made. Having this be a almost completely one person movie to has issues as well but the plot demands that. So the problems I have with this movie are plot related and not an issue of talent or budget which can drag movies better than this on down. The creep value is at the top, the tension is obvious and plentiful and the kids and the chubby leading man have enough skill and while the movie is nearly in complete darkness the director is clearly skilled and while the quick cuts are numerous I don't think they aren't only used for jump scares. If you enjoy tense rather then gory this will work for you if love slashers this isn't for you.
