'Phineas and Ferb' was one of the few Disney Channel shows in the past fifteen years that was watched by me and my siblings, also Disney fans, since its inception and continued to watch completely hooked, the re-runs being holiday highlights. The earlier episodes are better than the later ones, funnier and more creative, but even when the show was not at its best it was better than quite a lot of the shows airing on Disney Channel, which is just not the same anymore and had already gone downhill back then.
"Mommy Can You Hear Me" and "Road Trip" both had strong concepts. Both are also very well done and even great episodes, with "Mommy Can You Hear Me" getting the slight edge as the better and more consistent one, as well as more imaginative concept-wise. There are even better episodes of 'Phineas and Ferb' about (which says a lot about how brilliant the show is at its best), but the exceptionally high quality that the show had at this point is still very much there in both episodes.
Candace's antics in "Road Trip" is where that episode isn't as interesting as everything else that goes on, and everything with Candace is a lot less predictable in "Mommy Can You Hear Me" and she is included more.
Both main plots are very entertaining and inventive in both episodes, with the boys' antics being vintage Phineas and Ferb. The Perry and Doofenschmirtz subplot in "Mommy Can You Hear Me" is wonderfully wacky and has everything that makes me love both characters, such as Doofenschmirtz's one liners and the inventive physical comedic character interaction. Perry is still very cute yet full of personality. Doofenschmirtz's subplot in "Road Trip" was also fun if not as inventive.
Coming onto the individual elements, the animation is bright and colourful, with such vibrant colours that literally pop out at you and beautifully detailed backgrounds. The character animation is often wonderfully exaggerated details, big and small in namely the reactions. The music is in the style that is not usually my style of choice when listening to music, but it is very catchy and pleasant to listen to. The theme song is irresistible with a melody that sticks in the head for days without being an earworm and with very quotable lyrics.
Writing is full of wit and intelligence in both episodes, equally so and not one being better in this regard than the other, and the pacing is lively. It is never simplistic or forced, neither is it too complicated or tries too hard to be clever. The character interaction and writing are on point, especially with Perry and Doofenschmirtz. The voice acting is rock solid as ever.
All in all, very good. 8/10.
