As horror fans, we’re used to zombie outbreaks running wildly out of control, causing mass chaos and mounting odds. These types of movies love to showcase rotting flesh, gooey kills, and as many walkers as possible – unless you’re The Returned. Director Manuel Carballo and writer Hatem Khraiche fast forward through all the death and destruction, presenting a glimpse into a zombie movie phase most filmmakers refuse to explore – recovery. So many zombie stories focus on nothing but action, as survivors fight through the apocalypse, but what about after the government takes control again and is able to produce some type of vaccine to help newly turned “almost” zombies? What if people were transformed into zombie time-bombs waiting to turn just by missing one single dose? Welcome to the future.
In a world where a zombie epidemic has come and gone, those malicious brain-eaters we’ve come to know...

Zombies have been the bread ‘n’ butter monster for direct to DVD horror movies for the past several years in part because they’re cheap to “create” and there’s a generally accepted fear of being swarmed by a mob intent on eating your insides. A potentially greater fear is often left unexplored though in the more emotionally-based terror of losing a loved one to the chaos only to see them return to nibble on your fleshy bits. The Returned takes this idea, blows it up a bit, and then does something fairly surprising. It decides not to be a zombie horror movie at all. The viral outbreak that led to a zombie apocalypse has come and gone, and society is trying to move forward. A cure of sorts was discovered that brings the recently infected back to normal, but the injections are needed on a daily basis. If one shot is missed, the...

Manuel Carballo’s new zombie movie, The Returned, was released to theaters and VOD yesterday. We’ve previously shown you the poster, photos, and videos, and we’re now giving Daily Dead readers an exclusive look at the brand new trailer:
“Directed by Manuel Carballo, The Returned is set in a post-zombie world where a treatment called the “Return Protein” can stop the spread of the virus if injected quickly after infection, but cannot cure it. With daily injections, the “Returned” are able to live relatively normal lives, but with brutal attacks at the hands of Anti-Return groups and rumors that protein stock is running low, the world is again on the brink of chaos. In the midst of this turmoil are Alex (Kris Holden-Ried) and Kate (Emily Hampshire), a young, successful and enviable couple that are hiding a long held secret – Alex is Returned. Suspicious that a government order...

Certainly, there is something admirable about director Manuel Carballo's zombie drama "The Returned" when it uses the opening credits sequence to address the conventions of the genre, only to completely move away from them for the rest of the film. But the gamble never quite pays off the way you want it to. A mostly unnecessary flashback sequence—that is never returned to again until it's required to do some third act heavy lifting—gives horror fans what they come to expect from anything zombie related: blood, screaming, guns, more blood and terror as the dead become fearsomely undead. It's a concession to the audience, but a smartly played one even if it's structurally unsound, and it's a crudely efficient setup for what is ultimately a zombie medical drama. As is the current vogue of contemporary films about brain eaters, the modern rise of zombies in "The Returned" occurs...

Let’s step back in time for a moment… back to a time when a strange and deadly new virus emerged in our world. This virus would often go undetected at first, sometimes for years, and then strikes its victims with a devastating ferocity. This virus requires its victims to take daily regiments of very expensive retro-viral drugs and there is still no cure for this unfortunate condition.
Let’s now return to the present day. This virus still exists in the real world, but is manageable. What would happen if we suddenly exhausted the world’s supply of this life-saving drug?
The Returned, written by Hatem Khraiche, could very well be an allegory for this frightening hypothetical scenario. In the film, directed by Manuel Carballo, the virus is one that invokes all the typical symptoms of zombism. Yes. I know that’s not a real word… yet. Much like our real world virus,...

With zombie outbreaks and zombie apocalypses having been heavily tread and retread on the big and small screens, it seems there’s now a scramble to tell stories in a post-zombie world. ComingSoon has debuted a poster and clip for the Manuel Carballo-directed thriller The Returned. Akin to the BBC series In The Flesh, The Returned takes place in a world where the infected can be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.
Here are more details on the story from ComingSoon:

It's certainly no big secret that you can stuff all sorts of interesting social commentary into a zombie story. From George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead to the current TV series The Walking Dead, writers have been finding new and frequently clever ways to use the "zombie apocalypse" as a simple-yet-powerful analogy about the flaws, foibles, and shortcomings of normal humanity.
Borrowing a thematic page from films like Children of Men and Blindness (both superior films, but the comparison seems apt), The Returned focuses on the early stages of a "fantastic" yet disturbingly realistic apocalypse -- and it focuses a lot more on the personal stakes of a crumbling world than it does in slam-bang zombie-stompin' horror mayhem. The Returned, for lack of a better phrase, is a "horror drama," and if that sounds like a warning, well, it's not. This is a smart, intense, and frequently tragic horror story.

Someone finally decided to make a zombie movie! It’s about damn time! All kidding aside, director Manuel Carballo’s genre effort “The Returned” doesn’t look half bad. And this is coming from someone who simply refuses to watch most zombie movies these days. I just can’t do it. I draw the line at “The Walking Dead,” and I’m even having trouble making it through season four due to zombie burn out. But, I digress. Manuel Carballo is a solid director, though I wasn’t completely enthralled with his most recent effort “Exorcismus.” Although the flick had style to spare, the story was a little weak for my taste. However, “The Returned” looks pretty good. Horror fans and adventurous viewers can expect the flick to drop in the United States early next year. As always, a synopsis: Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping...

The Returned is a zombie film that has seen a few forms. There have been three posters to date that have been released by Filmax International for this title. The first has a green backdrop and a vial of blood seen in a character's hand. This concept poster can be seen here: The Returned Poster #1 on 28Dla. The second poster also hosted a vial of blood on an austere yellowy background. This second poster can be seen here: The Returned Poster #2 on 28Dla. Now, a third poster has been released, which actually shows characters from the film. The film's first tagline is: "neither zombies nor humans." Actor Kris Holden-Ried is figured prominently and the actress shown is Emily Hampshire as the character Kate. Holden-Ried seems to show a duality of character as seen in the bottom of the frame. There have been a few other developments on this film project.

In the upcoming Tiff selection My Awkward Sexual Adventure, Canadian actress Emily Hampshire plays an exotic dancer who helps a reserved accountant gain sexual experience in order to win back his ex-girlfriend. But the Cosmopolis star will soon take on a very different role in the Filmax feature horror film The Returned.
Directed by Manuel Carballo (Exorcismus), and written by Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, The Returned is a futuristic zombie movie in which undead victims are temporarily healed thanks to weekly injections of a serum. Hampshire, who just finished shooting All the Wrong Reasons with Kevin Zegers and Cory Monteith, will play a doctor who works with the victims. The film will also star Kris Holden Reid and Shawn Doyle. [Variety]
Production on The Returned will begin sometime this fall.
Does the premise of The Returned sound interesting? Do you think zombie movies are still relevant or have they become stale?...
