Brilliant concept
ArdourFilm10 August 2014
Absolutely loved this film. A fresh idea that I personally have never heard of has finally made its way into the film industry. They only ever come by once in a blue moon. The casting is spot on. Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David were perfect for the roles of Dylan and Rebecca. Ever since I saw Michael in his breakout role of Rob Hawkins in Cloverfield, I knew I had to keep and eye on him. He is definitely going places and this movie proves that.

This is the sort of movie where chemistry plays a major role and they without a doubt pulled it off. Without it, it would have been a big flop. Although it wasn't made on a small budget, it still had the same feel as one, which is nice. It adds a whole other element to it.

I could easily watch this another couple times and still be just as pleased as the first. Definitely worth buying.

Great performances really make this movie
deardarkness21 April 2014
In Your Eyes was written by Joss Whedon but on the surface it isn't your usual Whedon story. It is essentially a tale of love, two people who feel connected but are thousands of miles apart. Yet there is a twist, they can literally see through each others eyes and into the others world.

Now at times this film could verge on the melodrama but the chemistry between leads Zoe Kazen as Rebecca and Michael Stahl-David as Dylan is pretty amazing made more surprising by the fact that well they aren't on screen together. It is really hard not to fall for their charms even if the story goes many places I expected it to.

Not groundbreaking by any means by definitely worth watching. This is a tale about lonely people trying to connect and in the end that really is what a lot of Whedon's work is about.

A sweet and unique romance that's not too sappy!
ArchonCinemaReviews21 September 2014
Joss Whedon's metaphysical love story In Your Eyes currently premiered exclusively at Tribeca Film Festival.

Originally written in 1992 by acclaimed sci-fi screenwriter Joss Whedon, In Your Eyes departs from his more common futuristic thematic and dazzles with a romantically dreamy tone.

The Tribeca Film Festival summarizes the film aptly as featured on the IMDb summary.

The successfulness of this film is ultimately reliant on two key aspects. Insanely wonderful acting facilitated by engaging but believable screen-written dialogue and not too insipidly sentimental directing.

Joss Whedon is known for his screen writing thoroughness; taking into consideration all character motivations, believability of behavior, and credibility of consequences. No matter what project type he undertakes he seems especially successful within the science fiction realm. Though In Your Eyes does have a mythical aspect to its plot it is a far more realistic and romance driven plot.

Immediately In Your Eyes clearly explains and simply establishes the psychic connection between the lead characters Rebecca and Dylan. From that point on every choice, every characteristic, and every subplot is a thoughtful and deliberate decision by Whedon so the film can develop plausibly. Further the dialogue is effortlessly convincing as the real speech between two strangers getting to know one another through this mystical connection.

A sincere love story progresses in In Your Eyes despite the characters never physically interacting. Whedon's smartly insightful dialogue facilitates the romance in the movie. Truly this is possible solely due to the superb and impressive acting by the perfectly cast Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David. Zoe Kazan's Rebecca is charming and sweetly skittish, evolving as she opens up to Dylan. Dylan, played by Michael Stahl-David, is equally debonair in a rough-and-tumble kind of way and I am very excited to see how his career progresses after this promising performance.

I was completely engrossed by characters as they told their life stories, the weird moments in life explained by the other person and the amazing connection they develop. Though the ending is slightly commonplace, for a romantic film it is not nearly as sappy as the mainstream movies saturating the market.

A simple imaginative idea carried out with compelling grit and romance
secondtake21 December 2014
In Your Eyes (2014)

A terrific concept—and it unveils early on but if you don't know it it's a great surprise—and a well done movie, too. The key is the two main actors, a young man and a young woman in very different circumstances who seem destined for each other.

And they are 3000 miles apart.

Zoe Kazan (granddaughter of the director) is terrific throughout, playing a well- heeled woman with a controlling husband in beautiful New Hampshire. And Michael Stahl-David plays her counterpart with similar introspective intensity, but as an minor ex-con in a trailer in beautiful New Hampshire. What they have in common is something no one else has—and no one else can know about.

It's the ultimate romance movie in that first sense that you know they belong together and circumstances are keeping them apart. But it's also a romance in a deeper way, because the two get to know each other with extreme openness and intimacy. They naturally fall in love. And the world naturally will not make it easy.

In many ways the filming is quite solid in a familiar way, not drawing attention to itself except in scenes where two realities are made to blend (crudely). This is all about story and more story. Some of the side characters are imperfectly developed (even the controlling husband doesn't always resonate quite right). But the two leads are spot on, and their parallel development is our fascination.

The best romantic film I've seen!
rac-8193827 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Fell in LOVE with this movie! The actors are superb, i can't believe how much I grew connected to Dylan, he was absolutely charming and I couldn't help but feel a part of their world. The only critique I'd have about this film is concerned with the husband. I understand he's meant to portray the controlling husband that we as an audience are not meant to like, but his character didn't portray enough flaws for me to actually believe he was a bad man for her to be with. Of course she's completely meant to be with Dylan, but I would've liked to see more of a backstory on the husband and possibly be more aggressive in some way for me to be fully convinced she shouldn't be with him. That is my only concern with this film, everything else was amazing. It's been so long since i've watched a romantic movie where I physically could feel what the characters are feeling. Love love love this movie, must watch!

A well done sci-fi/fantasy romantic comedy
elykron21 April 2014
I saw this movie at its premiere the Tribeca Film Festival. It had some really good dialogue and some very funny scenes. The movie takes a little bit of time to get its footing, but once it finds it the movie is interesting and funny. It occasionally borders on getting cheesy but the better parts of the film more than make up for it. It is somewhat predictable, like most romantic movies, but that doesn't really detract from the movie at all.

The acting is really good from all of the leads and the chemistry between Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David is great despite not having much on screen interaction. Director Brin Hill did a great job of making a potentially disorienting topic really easy to follow. The dialogue is very witty as is typical in Joss Whedon's work. There is also a lot of genre mixing which is typical in his films.

The movie is successful in pretty much everything it attempts. The movie is very funny, interesting, and at times, fairly intense. Despite being a micro budget movie, it does not feel that way at all.

Love is in the eyes
victuki27 August 2014
Joss Whedon is the creator of "Firefly" (2002-2003) or "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003). The first a cult TV show, the second a terrible show that became almost a sci-fi classic piece of work, don't ask me why. All of this before becoming the guiding light of the Marvel films. But even before that, a young Whedon wrote this script right when he moved to L.A.

Almost two decades later, Whedon and writer Brin Hill ("Won't Back Down", 2012) teamed up to create a small project through a small company, Bellwether studios, who supported the film. This way you have a fully independent and funded movie. Rebecca (Zoe Kazan, the unforgettable Ruby Sparks), is not happy. She is married to a brilliant doctor and has everything she might need, yet she feels out of place and empty. Right across the country, an ex-con named Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) tries not to mess it up once again, since he has been a disappointment to everybody he ever knew. How these two opposite people can even begin to click? that is the reason to watch. It is an unexpected kind of love, but it is love anyway. This is not a classic boy meets girl, falls in love and so on. This is about how lost people can find themselves and their soul mates, in any given moment and in the most mysterious ways. Kazan and Stahl-David play flawed characters, but they are so human, so real you cannot help but relating to them. The movie keeps an intimate approach, and ultimately it gets to you, it is fantastic yet familiar. Don't miss it.

Wow
schmittinger833 May 2014
I don't know what the hell those last two folks were smoking when they watched this movie...but they missed probably one of the best love stories that I've ever seen! Obviously, they've never really been in love or haven't found their soul mates yet. The acting is incredible...especially when you add the fact that the two main characters are never in the same film studio. Pure acting at it's best! I also like the fact that the whole world could see this at the same time and not have to wait for it to show up at their local theaters. I pity the people who don't have a computer, because they'll never know the masterpiece that they missed. Maybe someday it will be made into a DVD for them? Does anyone know if it will be?

**Spoilers**! An amazing concept that was not realized to its full potential
dreamingmovies17 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There were some really amazing pieces to this movie: Both Michael Stahl-David (Dylan) & Zoe Kazan (Rebecca) were excellent casts, the concept had a really great metaphysical piece to it, and the romance was just right.

The reasons why I only gave it 6 out of 10 was mainly because of the useless role the doctor/husband (Phil) played and the lame attempt to dabble in the complexity of mental illness - I feel like the latter really detracted from the film.

Firstly, it seemed like the directors bit off more they could chew by adding that Rebecca had a mental health issue that was completely separate from the telepathic connection that her and Dylan had. The movie could have done without because there wasn't enough detail in the film to develop that piece of her character. There was no discussion about Rebecca's initial stay at the hospital except for that she was in there for 3 months and that she got better. I guess Rebecca having a history of mental illness makes it easier for Phil to throw her back into the institution when he hears a rumour that Rebecca allegedly cheated on him. I get that he 'runs' the hospital in town (which is pretty unconvincing given that he looks like he couldn't be more than 30 years old and barely looks old enough to be a resident), but there wasn't enough of a reason for him to convince a hospital to admit her.

I think the directors tried to help Phil's case by adding in a random psychologist/psychiatrist character who, just by meeting Rebecca a couple times, agrees with Phil that Rebecca has a mental illness due to her skidd-ish and nervous behaviour. This is a huge cause for concern, as no good-practicing psychiatrist would ever do that in real life. They essentially lock her up and feed her drugs without ever really diagnosing her with anything!

The movie didn't really show any reason for Phil to be with Rebecca other than that he is someone that likes power. He is verbally abusive, controlling, and doesn't seem to tolerate her or show any real affection towards her at all (he criticizes her outfits & style, doesn't let her drink or make her own decisions, dislikes her personality, tells her she 'embarrasses him'...). She seems more like a burden to him than anything else.

It seems that the director used Phil's character to rationalize Dylan & Rebecca's relationship to the audience. Unfortunately, the inconsistency of Phil's actions made for a really unrealistic character.

Overall, I really loved the concept of the film, the characters (Rebecca being a really complex and sweet character, and Dylan being trying to make an honest living and wanting to be a better person because of her influence). I really liked how the movie showed the impact of their presence in each other's lives. There was so much potential in this film, but the decisions with Phil's character ultimately made a movie that could have been amazing, only sub-par.

Strong start, weak finish
IAMVictoria6 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Great premise. Great acting for the lead roles. I got caught up in the emotion early in the movie, and really enjoyed the pace and interactions between the main characters. At this point, the story had huge potential for an amazing finish. As the end of the movie approaches, Becky's controlling husband has forced her into a mental hospital. Dylan, greatly distressed at this, drops everything to go to her. This is where the movie went downhill. Dylan arrives in a NH airport, and is denied renting a car due to a lack of drivers license. Yet he spent the first half of the movie driving his truck around his home town. On that note, the quality and newness of this truck did not fit with his impoverished situation. So, he leaves the airport, and steals a car shortly thereafter. Now on the run in a stolen car, he encounters a police cruiser, which turns on the flashers. Dylan makes a break for it. Out of nowhere (classic), additional cruisers join the chase. He successfully loses them in a slow slog through a muddy/snowy auto wreckers yard (?), which was difficult to believe. Meanwhile, with Dylan's telepathic assistance, Becky breaks out of the mental hospital, with staff and her husband in hot pursuit. She makes a break for it to the nearby forest, as Dylan has done the same thing after losing the police. If there was a hint in the story how they got to the very same area in NH, it was lost on me. They both hear a train in the distance, and tell each other to run for it. They get to the tracks, see each other for the first time, climb into a slow-moving empty boxcar, and embrace as if everything will be OK now. Whaaa? She has her controlling husband chasing her. He, an ex-con, has the police chasing him for auto theft, failing to stop for police, and who know what else. For me, this was not a happy ending.

One of the greatest romances I've ever had the pleasure to watch
maarten_5018 November 2014
This movie goes beyond what most romantic movies strive to do: depict a touching love story. Instead of just doing that this is about the immaterial asset in love we humans think we're capable of: to truly connect with someone on a higher level that no one else can understand. Some view this story as a romantic sci-fi movie, but these viewers ought to pay closer attention to unravel the continuous symbolism that runs throughout. The main concept that is to be found here is an allegory, with the subject consisting of distant soul mates.

The element of distance must've posed a daring job for cinematographers and actors, but they overcame this obstacle brilliantly: camera angles, lighting, stills,...all emphasized the 'facial acting' of the two lead characters portrayed by Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David. On a closing note: Zoe Kazan- I don't know what it is about that innocence- epitomizes the new romance flick leading ladies. Following in the footsteps of Zooey Deschanel and Rachel McAdams these ladies win over a very broad male audience which has a whole lot to do with presenting a counterweight for the -often balancing on vulgar- sexually (and morally) unruly pop culture.

A love story with a paranormal twist.
swellframe176 July 2014
Brin Hill's "In Your Eyes" is an unusual romantic comedy that was self-distributed online rather than have a theatrical distribution. The paranormal story comes from the mind of Joss Whedon. It tells the story of Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) and Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) who have never met, but are able to communicate with each other in their minds. They can talk to each other and see through each other's eyes. It's like having a cell phone in your head, except you can tap into the other person's senses. Rebecca and Dylan learn to communicate with each other and, of course, fall in love.

Its a nice romantic/sci-fi film that doesn't rely on visual effects. Steven Pilgrim's editing makes Rebecca and Dylan's conversations feel very natural, even though the two hardly ever share the screen together. Elisha Christian's cinematography makes the colors potent and help to connect with the characters (Rebecca has more blues and Dylan has more yellows). The film has a nice indie soundtrack with artists like Iron & Wine and The Lumineers.

This is a story for the outsiders, for the people who feel trapped by something or someone. Its a love story for anyone who has felt disconnected from everyone around them and wants to connect with just one person. Rebecca and Dylan reach out to each other and learn from each other.

Kazan and Stahl-David grow into the performances. They start off a little shaky, but become stronger. Kazan is solid as Rebecca. Rebecca and Dylan's conversations are well written for the most part. The supporting characters do not get as much depth, though, and seem stiff. Maybe its the performance that is stale or the dialogue. Maybe a little bit of both.

The first hour is nice look at this paranormal aspect and how two lonely people learn to connect with someone. However, the last half hour becomes more fantastic and fairytale-like. Characters gradually do things out of their characters and the story becomes too forced for me. Maybe I was looking at it the wrong way. It just become too predictable and formulaic for me.

You could look at this as a simple love story about finding the one person you're meant to be with. You can also look at this film as a metaphor for long distance relationships or a subjective narrative where one of the characters is dreaming all this up and we're watching what they want unfold.

"In Your Eyes" is a nice romantic sci-fi film for all the outsiders, but it has faults. It can be predictable, sappy, and too much of a fairytale without setting itself up as a fairytale. Maybe if I watched it again knowing what would happen, I may like it little more, but, on a first take, it wasn't a strong film to me. The film is at its best when Rebecca and Dylan talk to each other about their lives and who they were. It feels real and gets to the heart of the film.

Fantasy Love Story Gets Way Too Sappy & Preposterous
larrys317 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
When I was reading the premise for this fantasy love story I thought to myself this might be quite sappy and preposterous, and unfortunately that's the way it turned out. Unless you're a complete romantic and only interested in the essence of the fantasy, you may find, as I did, that this movie just became more and more ridiculous and ponderous as it progressed, and I couldn't wait till it was over.

The plot revolves around a telepathic relationship between a young woman, Rebecca (Zoe Kazan), and a young man, Dylan (Michael Stahl-David), which apparently started when they were both in grade school, but separated by thousands of miles. Neither Rebecca or Dylan will be aware of this relationship till years later. In this relationship, they can feel each other's pain, both physical and mental, although it's never really explained how this could possibly happen.

Now some 20 years later, they are able to discover their telepathic attachment, which has laid fairly dormant for all those years. They can also now connect visually into each other's reality and verbally connect with each other at any time. Dylan is living in New Mexico, and is a parolee from prison where he served 2 years for theft, while Rebecca is living in New Hampshire with her physician husband Phillip (Mark Feuerstein).

As mentioned, for me, it just got more and more absurd, as they were able to have telepathic sex and never seemed to worry about how anyone around them was reacting, or how it affected their lives, as they were constantly talking into the air and acting so strangely, leading to most people thinking they had gone completely "bonkers". It will all spiral into a predictable and frenetic finale.

I thought the extremely talented script writer Joss Whedon really "went off the rails" with this one, and the film is directed by Brin Hill.

One good love story
dashing-native973 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, my score may be too low? But I don't really like love stories but this could have been so much better but what I got was pretty good enough. So let me just start off by saying this: It had some slow moments and they could've easily added things that would actually make it a bit more logical. For instance they could've easily talked to each other on a bluetooth or phone! There are some stupid actions they did that could've been avoided also shortening the story which I would've loved since it was kind of too long. And to top it all off why didn't they exchange emails or give out actual phone numbers? Okay I'm done.

The story itself is probably the most understandable and logical explanation to where their bonds can be more closer to each other since they can feel and see what's happening to each other! Although a lot of things left unexplained, hey Joss wrote this right? Couldn't he have just added in some easter eggs about The Avengers or Agents of Shield? Meaning if they are in the superhero universe that they could have joined Shield right? Or explain that they have powers for simply living in that universe! If that were the case I wouldn't need a lot of detail or maybe their destination and ending could have changed trying to find headquarters of Shield.

Anyway enough superhero talk! Let me say this: For a love story I found this rather amusing, considering I absolutely abhor love stories in movies! We've seen it all before but this one was too good to look away despite it's flaws. The dialogue is entertaining and funny, chemistry builds that actually makes the two lovers get close. The only reason why I actually liked this one is because they can feel each other and that they actually are kind of made for each other since they cannot be separated, literally meaning that in a sense they can't really date anyone else than themselves. This is the closest thing I've ever seen in a love story that true love might actually exist! All and all I gotta say do not skip this romance movie.

Hmm
Zen-2-Zen17 July 2014
Great idea (and SciFi is supposed to always be the genre of ideas), good, but somewhat lacking writing by Joss Whedon. However very mediocre direction, wrong casting for the female lead (supports looking way better than the lead ?) and way too low budget.

It can also be considered a pot hole that all of the sudden their communication is at a more direct level while for 20 years they had no contact. There should nave been a major game changing event involved.

Whedon should have directed this on his own and waited/fought for at least a 10 mil budget. This way he wasted great idea on a 1 mil ultra indie with way too off female cast that will never attract even a sizable narrow release audience.

Maybe in a few years someone is going to do a rewrite and a remake.

So Close...But Not quite
cindybabytalkbrady7 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The concept is great. The two main actors are splendid. Some of the dialogue is quite good- especially for the male lead. I do not buy that suddenly in a non-nondescript moment they start talking out loud to each other and that they turn it off and on like a phone call. They should have had moments of parallel that brought them together. There should be some condition- like being drunk or in a stressful situation that randomly sparked the connection. They should have had quiet moments were one was feeling the other one...without making their presence known...like during sex. It feels a bit over done to give her a rich but terrible husband- while he is dirt poor and such the perfect charmer. The fact the they get in the most impossible to escape situation and pull the happy ending out of their ass was too much for me. Yes...I feel the build up- it has an exciting feeling- but I think I would have had him shot and cut her head off with the train. I do not like textbook happy pulled out of the ass. Drive off the cliff like in Thelma and Louise...Something.

I am so thankful that I found this movie!
kiwistar199115 December 2014
I was skimming through Netflix and noticed this hidden gem. I normally ignore the newer things Netflix puts up especially when I've heard nothing about the movie even though it had come out this year. But i saw some other reviews on IMDb and thought, what the heck? I'll give it a try. I am so glad I did! I could not keep my eyes off of it. The acting is just amazing! The story had me hooked from the first scene. It is so much more than just a supernatural love story. The characters are so believable even though they're in an unrealistic setting. In Your Eyes is now in my top favorites and I cannot recommend this movie enough! It may not be for everybody but you don't want to risk the chance of never finding out.

There are dangers in watching this movie
xylophone5929 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Zoe Kazan acted well. Both leads did. it would be easy to put this movie down but I don't like canning the creative efforts of film makers. There were a lot of good elements to In Your Eyes. But I feel it is a bit over rated. I liked the photography. Americana was depicted well with some nice songs in the music. The payroll officer was good and depicted well. There were a lot of amusing moments and the complication with his old buddies was clever. But the movie reeked too much of idea; though I guess we need "idea" style movies and it is unavoidable. One problem I saw in it was the dabbling in psychiatry that was in it. There were subliminal ideas in it like, mental illness is not quite real and it must be the system that has it wrong. There is also a dangerous notion in there that it is justified not to take the medication some times. In the movie the illusion is real; but I think its a bad idea to dabble in the notion that the voices were real people- a notion that is the crux of the movie. Real people do hear voices and I am supposing that the voices are not real in probably 99 if not 100% of cases. This fantasy made for money made me uncomfortable in that it presents voices in the head as real and that the problem is the field of psychiatry not understanding the real situation. Therefore avoiding the meds may be justifiable. I dunno- it just seems dangerous to me. Its a common myth that the patient has insights that the psychiatrist does not understand. The special insight myth is not true. Visit a psychiatric institution just to understand this. Mental illness is really real. For this reason this seemingly innocuous movie is I think somewhat dangerous. Also the lovemaking scene between the two long distance protagonists is excruciatingly corny. Otherwise it was entertaining enough with quite a lot of amusing scenes.

All Time Favourite! Wow!
not_my_noodles23 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
What I hate about happy ending in every movie I watch is the fact that the story still isn't really over. What makes this movie so great is that the ending was built up to so well, it was at the point in the storyline I wanted it to end at.

What I love about this movie is how by the end of the movie I was left feeling like the only way they could live and be happy, was together and the fact that a connection they've had since birth brings them together. I don't consider myself much of a romantic but there's something about being fated to be with someone and the idea that sharing your life with the right person, THE person, will give me my own happy ending and that just makes me gush.

The casting was amazing especially Zoe Kazan who certainly wasn't hard to look at. If you're on the border on whether or not to watch this all you need to know is its a romantic film and its amazing!

Another great story about being different and not fitting in!
Hellmant2 May 2014
'IN YOUR EYES': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

Nerd God Joss Whedon wrote the script to this supernatural rom-com in the early 90s (he also wrote a song for the soundtrack and executive produced the movie)! It's directed by Brin Hill and stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David (who you may recognize as the lead from 'CLOVERFIELD'). The film is somewhat groundbreaking in that it was self-distributed online (rather than being released in any theaters or on video first). It was shot on a $1 million budget and tells the story of two strangers, living across the country from each other, who can sense each other's feelings and even speak to one another. It's a little cheesy even for a Whedon film but it's nicely directed and has plenty of cool moments. The film costars Nikki Reed, Jennifer Grey, Mark Feuerstein, Steve Howey and Steve Harris.

Kazan plays Rebecca Porter, the lonely wife of an arrogant doctor, Phillip Porter (Feuerstein), who lives in New Hampshire. Stahl-David plays Dylan Kershaw, an ex-con who was recently paroled in New Mexico. They've had a connection since childhood but never understood it; constantly sensing each other's feelings (especially pain and fear). One day the two finally speak and begin an odd relationship with one another, which sends both their lives spiraling into new directions.

The gimmick of the two constantly talking to each other (while looking like crazy people to everyone else) gets pretty silly and painful to watch at times but Hill's direction is good enough to make most viewers overlook that one glaring flaw (I think). He brings a beautiful touch to Whedon's clever screenplay and that script has a great message to it; about how society looks at and treats those they think are mentally ill. It is another great story about being different and not fitting in that gives everyone hope to find someone they can connect with. The intimacy between the two characters making that connection (in this film) is mostly very touching and inspiring to watch. If you can get past the corny jokes and sappy rom-com feel (that comes and goes throughout the movie) it is an interesting and thoughtful film going experience.

too stupid...even for a rainy afternoon

Warning: Spoilers
A well done sci-fi/fantasy romantic comedy? Great performances really make this movie? All Time Favourite! Wow!?!!... NO WAY !!!! After reading previous reviews , I was really tempted to watch this movie. I confess I'm not much into "romance category" but decided to give it a try. Everything in the movie makes no sense. The plot , (although it got a good start) just felt short in every aspect. The protagonists , having this "incredible connection" , never care to find out about their ability, neither to consult a scientist, doctor ( the girl's husband happens to be one, a very influential, recognized one), nor a para- normal therapist...after all...this telepathy thing...could have taken the movie to another level ( but the writers didn't have the wits to make that happens)..so, they just took it for granted...and the "final touch" about escaping to Canada just add the last drop of stupidity. The acting....well, let's say that considering, could have been worst...but unless you are forced to watch this movie ( maybe as a kind of torture) just do yourself a favor , and do something else. Still , I frankly don't understand the other reviews...may be, my brain is too wasted...but just watch 10', and let me know.

The Feelings are Still Here!
ebenbanban27 January 2021
This is an amazing, lovely and underrated movie. I'm sad that most people don't know this. The acting is great, both of the main characters. They feel real and makes me really want them to be together. Not like some other awkward films. The feelings I got during and after watching this movie are still here. Love, joy, fun and sadness. Trust me, don't miss this. You will feel "LOVE" again after watching this.

Decent but Formulaic

Warning: Spoilers
This was a cute watch, but not the greatest thing I've watched lately. I really enjoyed the premise, and the leads were very good. There were a few moments that I found a bit too cheesy. But all in all, I enjoyed myself for a couple hours.

To the other reviewer who wondered if this were the same as a TV show plot from the 80s.... yes! This is what i was thinking when I was watching it! If I recall, it was actually an episode of the "new" Twilight Zone, which involved a teenage guy in the 80s driving a flashy red sports car, and she was in the 1800s, and she carved their names into a tree and it was still there when he went to look in the 80s! With that show on my mind while i was watching this, I was actually convinced that this movie was going to end by us finding out they were actually living in two different times just a few years apart and that they weren't going to be united at the end. :_)

An underwhelming piece of dribble
smanteufel17 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film off the back of its strong premise and the promise of a decent acting performance from the usually brilliant Zoe Kazan. I suppose I'll preface my review by saying that I was disappointed, as the film seemed totally unable to stick to any genre it supposedly was. Initially pitched as a sci-fi/ romance, the film dwindled into a pudgy mess of awkward dialogue, ill-fitting score and incredibly unlikable and unrelatable characters.

Whilst the plot seemed a unique take on the generally overplayed star-crossed lovers theme it didn't take me long to figure out that this was just another chick-flick full of comedically bad villains the likes of; the nosy housewife who couldn't paint, or, the women who liked her steaks well done. The most heinous of all villains was of course Phillip the husband, whilst not being wholly neglectful in his marriage, was just so unrealistically dickish that at times I did think Rebecca, played by Kazan, should run away with the random voice in her head. Perhaps this was supposed to infer some underlying theme regarding domestic abuse, but in all honesty the worst thing he actually did apart from being a jerk all the time was stop her from refilling her wine glass at that boring function.

The old 'troubled intellectual' / 'Good Will Hunting' trope also made an appearance through Dylan's character, played by Michael Stahl-David, which might just have worked in making him a likable character if not for his continuous stupidity. It was particularly grating when the film tried to introduce the idea of his intellect through dry wit and the word "benign" when chatting with a woman at the bar... I mean clearly he's to good for this town if he knows such a big word. But overall I just found the film a hard pill to swallow as I cringed through nearly every interaction.

If you must watch this film, or you have already watched it and are trawling through the reviews for some explanation as to why you just sat through such a "benign" piece of trash, may I recommend a nearly identical yet vastly superior film "The F word" ("What If" in the U.S) also starring Zoe Kazan but without the psychic element or the terrible, terrible.... everything else.

Not perfect but a pleasure to watch

When The Avengers came out in 2012, I was very surprised about how good it was and kept wondering why Joss Whedon was able to create such an awesome superhero movie. This film is one of the reasons why.

The film centrals around Dylan and Rebecca, two people from very different backgrounds. Rebecca is the wife of Phillip- a very successful doctor and her life revolves around going to boring parties with her husband. Dylan is an ex-con who now works as a car wash. Their lives have a dramatic change when they realised they can see and experience each others' feelings despite being miles away from each other.

The best part of this film is how well director Brian Hill juggles the transitions between the two characters. It never felt out of place or hard to catch up with, it was executed smoothly. I also love how each charcters' life is potrayed. They have their own problems and their connection doesn't make life any easier, in fact, it makes them struggled more than they have ever been. The fact that how different their worlds are along with Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David's brilliant chemistry just make the duo very likeable and we can actually feel for them.

The film's plot is pretty straight-forward and doesn't have any crazy plot twists, but it did a really great job building the characters and their relationships. This is something Joss has done before in The Avengers where the film centralised on characters and use them to tell the story instead of over-complicating it. Its a perfect plot as this is just a simple romance-comedy film. Not to mention the very open ending. To me the ending was great and it's best to leave things ambiguous because if it were the same old happily ever after then this film wouldn't be that good anymore.

The film definitely has some problems as well. I found the major issue to be how Becky and Dylan first found out they were connected. The scene while hilarious, felt kind of fast and sloppy. I mean, if I knew there are voices in my head I would try to get rid of it ASAP because that's just scary.

All in all, In Your Eyes was a great film with a perfect balance between romance and fantasy. It's not without flaws, but what more can you ask for. I would definitely recommend it to viewers who just want a good time or couples, especially if they are currently far apart. Very excited to see more from Joss Whedon.
