A Good Animated Fable
Theo Robertson30 April 2014
!!!! Suggestive Spoilers !!!!!

An inventor builds a machine to help humanity in its burden of physical labour , Very quickly the machine's self awareness leads to its thinking that it's superior to humanity

This is one of those sci-fi fables warning that while technology can be beneficial the benefits may come with a heavy price . We're all luddites at heart . As a story there's a very impressive brevity to THE MACHINE with the downside being that it's maybe a little bit too simplistic and threadbare but it makes its point in a far more streamlined way than say THE TERMINATOR franchise

Of course since it's an animated short the story is probably secondary to the animation and we're treated to some very impressive stop frame animation puppetry by director Rob Shaw . We're shown the wheels of industry turning and these wheels signify the same sort of cyclical nature of historical determinism . You have one autocrat with a superiority complex ? Hold your horses because another autocrat will be along very shortly . Mr Shaw also makes good use of an appropriate score that is rhythmic and inorganic and I also think the flat dead pan delivery by narrator Andrea Schuch is supposed to reflect the subtext of the story but found her tones slightly irritating . Despite this THE MACHINE is still a very good short animated film
