Hanako Greensmith shines again in one of the best episodes in recent Chicago Fire memory. The show seems at it's absolute best when dealing with tragedy, and there is plenty of that for Violet in this episode as she deals with the selfless loss of Chief Hawkins, killed in the line of duty at the end of the last episode. If Greensmith's acting was good in those few minutes, it's better again in "The Center of the Universe", which is saying something. Her scenes in the apartment with Taylor Kinney's Severide (a character who knows plenty about grief and trauma) were spectacular.
There is plenty of taking stock and soul-searching around Firehouse 51 in this episode, but they still have time to rescue a kid buried beneath a huge sandpile on a Lake Michigan beach - one of the more memorable rescues I can remember on a show that has had plenty. The beer stein story brought a touch of much-needed levity to the episode.
