Poor Storytelling
Conradventure27 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this love interest coming and didn't want to believe it. But here we are. How the hell did Raylan go from hooking up with 10s to a 3? What precedent is there for his character to do that? This seems like some shoddy attempt to be progressive but really it is just cheap storytelling. Previously his love interests were stunners and now they pair him with a very normal looking woman. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with that on a character level, but you need to at least explain Raylan's change in the story. Otherwise, how are we as viewers to make sense of this version of the character-this storytelling choice is a huge divergence from the previous iteration of the character and it just doesn't make sense.

Come on, writers, you can do better than this. You need to make us believe Raylan would do this, but as it was written it seems unbelievable and silly.

What is going on??

I loved the original Justified series and was excited to revisit Raylan Givens in J:CP. However, after the first episode I lost interest and likely may not even finish the series. I know Raylan is older now, but he is unrecognizable in this series, not in appearance but in demeanor and action. Worse than anything is that this show is BORING! Nothing happens after the first episode....chasing the antagonist and following the antagonist as he talks to a partner in crime.....every....single...episode. Also, I do not buy the romantic relationship.

A Justified sequel should have been based in Harlan county with some of the original cast. Disappointed.

Clearly they didn't have enough story for a whole season

What a waste of an episode. I was on board at first but this season has been seriously spinning its wheels for several episodes now. Nothing is really working anymore. The villain is aimless and grating, the love plot line is tacked on and pointless, and I'm sick of watching two characters yammer back and forth with dull dialogue. Gone are the days of razor sharp repartee and classic showdowns. Every episode - especially this one - just ends with a thud because they just don't have the plot points to hang a solid story on.

It really sucks because this mini series is going to end up souring me on the original run because it's just become that grating and lifeless.

This show has really lost its way.

It's kind of sad to see. A once great show with a reboot that stinks like rancid old fish. Gone is the wit and the humor. Gone is the great dialog. Gone are the action sequences. Gone are interesting bad guys that are edgy and smart. This is so stodgy and boring. The love tryst is utterly ridiculous. It looks like something that comes out on CBS. This episode especially is useless to the series and isn't needed to propel the characters, plot and story arc along. Every scene just drops like a lead balloon with a huge thump and descends into a pit of boredom. And whatever happened to those Albanians?

Name only

This characters name is Raylan, but that's about the only similarity there is between the original Raylan and this one.

Let's just say that his latest love interest is no Ava. And the bad guy would've been tossed out of Boyd's gang. Probably beaten to a pulp as well for spending way too much time wearing a kimono in his underwear.

There was a scene where Sweetie (?!) tells a totally pointless story about meeting Miles Davis. I guess that is supposed to pass for character development.

Good thing the judge only wrote down the dirt using the 'one page per person' method or else when they tear a page out, they'd be giving out extra information.

It's too bad that these writers didn't go on strike before they typed out this mess.

I guess it's true that you can't go home again.

So Sad

Warning: Spoilers
I guess I'm going to watch the rest just to finish the series.

The second he woke up in Carolyn's bed I knew it was over. They didn't even bother to find a woman who is Raylon's type. Either for his inevitably doomed relationship or the doomed show. All of his relationships were about the physical attraction, that was one of his character flaws. Now his character is just flawed. He can't even manage the swagger anymore. Or the quick wit. I thought playing a sheriff's deputy was his sweet spot?

Maybe they just made this because they thought they had to? Maybe they didn't really feel like it but caved under pressure? They didn't even bother to sign a talented ensemble that was clearly so integral to the success of the first Justified. (Even that started wearing thin with Sam Elliot playing the final villain.)

How could they not see that Detroit wasn't going to be the right tonic for Raylon Givens' unique brand of sharp humor and sharp shooting gin.

The villains suck. The good guys suck. Raylon is old, skinny, and tired. And any hope of bringing Willa (played by Olyphant's real-life daughter, Vivian) into the mix and making it fun went home with her to Florida.

And I'm tired of looking at Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) in his underwear. I don't care if it's real or not. I never did decide if Raylon stuffed with a sock in the first Justified? The picture of him standing outside the prison as Boyd walked away is still mighty fine.

Joe Pickett is an okay alternative, but it doesn't have any of the fun either.

Warning: Spoilers
Justified: City Primeval has been an easy watch for sure, but some of the writing and direction just seems a bit off. All of these lawyers and officials suddenly turning to vigilante justice and willing to bend the law? It does not make a lick of sense.

I have been enjoying the show, but the recent direction of Clement slowing down a bit to prepare for his departure and Raylan seeming more invested in his romantic escapades than anything else just does not feel right.

Still, this is a good show and in a summer where the schedule is pretty light on broadcast and on cable we need a program like this.
