Solid episode

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this episode was enjoyable and I agree it feels like old school MSM with original, elaborate murders and secrets from the past that relate to present events. I enjoyed the setting more usual, and that's saying a lot since it's so routinely great in this show, with most action taking place in and around the gorgeous, old mill in summer, the neighboring farm, and the local pub. It was a really feast for the eyes.

I know people often say they want more of Winter, and his role did seem more front and center here than in recent seasons, so people should be pleased. Sarah's friend was perhaps a bit too over the top annoying, to the point where I was asking why Sarah was friends with such a horrible woman. It seems she could have been written a little differently yet still got under Barnaby's skin. However I enjoyed the baking class that briefly turned into the Great British Bake Off. And I enjoyed the friend throwing herself at Winter. But in general on the show, Sarah seems to be more of a plot device than a real person. She has some new interest every week (that we never hear about again) and not great friends. She doesn't seem like a real person from season to season.

Many of the characters in this episode were less likable than usual. The couple running the pub were a nightmare. And I've seen that actress elsewhere and really like her, so casting wasn't the problem. The Italian woman, the reporter, the cheating husband, the thief - all dreadful people. Usually, even though the characters each week are flawed, they still have charm or earn sympathy. This was my biggest issue with the story.

But overall it was fun following the twists and turns of the investigation. It was possible to figure out who done it as things went along but the finer details were only revealed at the end. And of course, the scenery was the real star. A very solid episode.

Very Old-School
TJR2110 January 2023
This one had it all and felt very much like the earlier episodes in the series.

It has everything from beautiful scenery, excellent characters and a story/plot that is easy to follow. Wonderful direction and cinematography.

The many twists and turns in the story felt very MM and lots of red herrings to stop you from guessing who the culprit is. The characters are very quirky and full of depth.

The murders are suitably MM, imaginative and memorable. One inparticular is reminiscent of a murder in Taggart, back in the 1990s.

One of my newest favourites amongst many and worthy of a 10/10. I thought it was superb!

Great Episode

Overall, a great episode with an excellent plot. I had no idea who the killer was. Didn't see it coming at all. The usual cheating and sex naughtiness was going on. Some very funny bits with Sarah Barnaby and her friend who was hitting on Winter.

As usual, poor Winter has to get his clothes wet/dirty/muddy/damaged. This kind of thing happens in almost every episode he is in. He used to be a lot cockier in his responses to Barnaby, but that has toned down quite a bit. Would like to see more snappy retorts to Barnaby.

The villagers were extremely evil this time around to undermine the bakery at the mill. Which is sad. Too bad they can't all get along.

Went heavy on humor.

I started enjoying it more when I realized how campy it was meant to be. Really off the charts campy. One of the series most comedic episodes. Stunning Sarah Barnaby's (Fiona Dolman) knockout girlfriend Laila Rouass as Vanessa Debouverie seemed out of place at first. But I can see her casting as comedic eye candy really serving no other purpose. Same with blackmailing Natasha Atherton as Lara Milton/Sophie Rendle. Her character made no sense being there other than her beauty. I enjoyed the brilliant overacting of another beauty Rebecca Night as Chrissie Larkton. Not the run of the mill MM episode not to be taken too seriously. A fun fast paced viewing.

Not very good sadly.

Warning: Spoilers
"A Grain of Truth" is not an awful entry in this great series, it is just very underwhelming considering there are so many episodes that offer so much more. Julia Gilbert, who is the writer of this episode, has sadly never written anything I've liked. Still expecting to see a good episode from her.

Let' s start with the redeeming qualities.

. The production values of this episode are great. The direction is decent and the music fits the scenery. Out of the mediocre cast Laila Rouass and Natasha Atherton deliver fine performances, Martin Trenaman is not too bad either.

. The murders are imaginative and there is some charm here and there.

But...

. The mystery feels weird and uninteresting for the most part with lifeless characters and over the top, dull subplots. The story feels mostly padded and the performances are not very good for the most part. Robert Gilbert fails to be intimidating in his role, Geoffrey Lumb overacts quite a bit, Rebbeca Night is bland and Flamina Cinque is not very convincing either. The identity of the killer (Gabriel) is not that hard to figure out, once starting to put all the puzzle pieces together and the motive for the murders is generic at best.

Overall, a bizarre episode.

4/10 HK.

A Few Grains Short
scribblebytes29 May 2023
I don't know if it's because of Cornova restrictions or writing staff changes but something is missing from this season. I've never been able to figure out who the killer is but for the first time I've figured it out twice in: The Debt of Lies and A Grain of Truth. The latter one didn't even make sense. The editing was weird, the tone was off. The actors were brilliant, especially Robert Gilbert but the story was very bizarrely executed. What did you guys do? Something has been changed and it needs to be fixed. There were good moments in A Grain of Truth and the concept behind The Blacktrees Prophecy was very good, but then it just goes off the rails. The stakes aren't as high as usual. The camera work is not as exciting as usual and it doesn't have that community feeling. Normally whenever I watch the show I feel like living in Midsomer, but with season 23 it feels like such a depressing place. Again, the actors have been brilliant and I have Dressed To Kill left to watch. And eat about Mrs Barnaby? She usually has a life, but this season she's kusy cooking and cleaning. Mr Barnaby used to be sharp, but he can't switch on a coffee machine? And Winters used to be suave and precocious and now he doesn't have those funny moments as much. And what about Fleur? She was hardly in it. Was it because of the Cornova restrictions and nobody could shoot on certain days? In a Grain of Truth there wasn't even 1 scene with all the charcaters so we can see the power dynamics. Please please please come back strong with Season 24. Maybe go back to doing 1 story per episode instead of 2 parts. Or just put back that thing that season 23 was missing.
