Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

Danny Perkins made waves in the British film industry back in 2018 when he left his long-time position as CEO of StudioCanal UK — a tenure that had seen him oversee major and beloved hits including Paddington 1 & 2, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy and Shaun the Sheep Movie — to set up his own film and TV production company.
Elysian Film Group, which he launched with producer Kate Solomon (United 93), in early 2020 unveiled its distribution arm, backed by minority investment from CAA (the giant’s first investment in a U.K. distributor). The timing wasn’t great, however, coming less than a month before the first pandemic lockdown.
It was, understandably, a slow start on both the production and distribution front. But 2023 has seen the company — a nimble operation of just four staffers, including Perkins (who brings partners on board for big releases) — make some major noise. First up, it’s biggest in-house film to date,...

Munich-based Koch Films has struck a deal with Studiocanal Germany to take over the distributor’s entire sales and logistics activities for all physical home entertainment activities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Studiocanal’s extensive portfolio comprises new releases, series and classic catalog titles such as Francis Ford Coppola’s newly restored 1983 teen drama “The Outsiders” and David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” as well as works by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Margarethe von Trotta.
The agreement pools Studiocanal and Koch Films’ strengths and bolsters their market position in the home entertainment sector over the long term, the companies said.
Studiocanal’s Arthaus label includes such recently restored films as Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”; Ousmane Sembène’s 1968 Senegalese classic “Mandabi”; and Richard Kelly’s “Donnie Darko” as well as German titles like Reinhard Hauff’s 1975 drama “The Brutalization of Franz Blum,” featuring Jürgen Prochnow...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Netflix and Aardman Animations, the U.K.’s best-known stop-motion studio, have released a new image and teaser from their upcoming musical holiday special “Robin Robin” during a panel at Annecy Animation Festival.
The charming half-hour short, which features the voices of Gillian Anderson and Richard E. Grant, tells the story of a baby robin (called Robin) who is adopted by a family of thieving mice. Although she thinks of herself as a mouse, as Robin grows she begins to notice that she can’t sneak around quite as effectively as her adopted siblings, which leads her on a journey of self-discovery.
“It’s a story of her figuring out her difference,” Dan Ojari, who co-directs the special alongside Mikey Please, said during the session. “The story is based around her kind of realising that actually her abilities are different to the mice.”
“Robin Robin” marks a departure from Aardman’s traditional fare.

20th Century Studios just dropped the trailer for its new animated feature “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” and you might think at first you’re watching a preroll advertisement.
That’s because the trailer opens with a commercial for B*Bot, a digital sidekick that can seemingly do anything. Young Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer) is thrilled when he thinks he gets a B*Bot as a belated birthday gift. But he ends up with a faulty version named Ron.
Ron is voiced by Zach Galifianakis and looks like a cross between Baymax from “Big Hero 6” and a Minion from “Despicable Me.” He’s anything but despicable though; his flaws — including a glitchy display and occasional strangling of chickens (you have to watch) — make him utterly adorable.

The Oscar race for animated feature is between Pixar’s Black-led “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s hand-drawn Irish folktale, “Wolfwalkers” (co-produced by Apple Original Films). Both led Asifa-Hollywood’s prestigious Annie Awards, but the momentum is with “Soul.”
The other nominees include Pixar’s first fantasy, “Onward,” and two entries from Netflix: “Over the Moon,” the gorgeous musical fantasy about the Chinese Moon Goddess from Disney legend Glen Keane (Oscar winner for the “Dear Basketball” short), and Aardman’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.”
With director/chief creative officer Pete Docter at the helm, Pixar accomplished its most ambitious film yet by contrasting gritty New York City with the ethereal Great Before. After working behind the scenes on 2015’s Oscar nominated Shaun the Sheep Movie, Will Becher and Richard Phelan jumped at the chance to make their feature directorial debut with A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, introducing gorgeous new characters and environments into a classic stop-motion world.

With Christmas now behind us, and 2021 fast approaching, it’s a good time to review all the new content that’s been added to Netflix in the last week. Highlights include the period drama Bridgerton, as well as Charlie Brooker’s Death to 2020 special, and the George Clooney-directed The Midnight Sky. What’s been made available, then, to the platform in the last seven days?
Well, on the movie side, Brooker’s Death to 2020 adapts his Screenwipe review format for Netflix, with the likes of Hugh Grant, Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery, and Samuel L. Ilan Eshkeri is something of a musical adventurer. He’s an award-winning composer who has scored a wide variety of films including Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, Shaun the Sheep Movie, has composed a modern ballet based on Echo & Narcissus, has conducted an orchestra at the Louvre, and has even worked with the European Space Agency. As an artist, he’s always looking to be challenged and inspired in new ways. And his latest project is unlike anything he’s ever done before.
“I’ve been saying, ‘Let me do a video game’ for like fifteen years,” Eshkeri tells Den of Geek over a Zoom call, explaining why he chose Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima as the next evolution in his career. He’d composed music for just one other game, The Sims 4 back in 2014, and when Sucker Punch approached him to compose music for the studio’s upcoming samurai epic,...

Julia Sawalha, one of the stars of the 2000 Aardman Animation classic “Chicken Run,” said Thursday she was not asked to return to the recently announced sequel because producers thought her voice now sounds “too old.”
In a statement shared Thursday, Sawalha said that an actress normally would be allowed to do a voice test to prove they can still match the pitch and tone of the original character, but she said she was informed by producers without being given that chance.
In response, she recorded her own voice demonstration and shared it with producers and posted it to Vimeo, in which she mimics the lines of her character Ginger from the original “Chicken Run.” You can listen to Sawalha’s demo here.

Though a sequel to the Aardman stop-motion animated film “Chicken Run” is in the works, one of the original film’s voice actors Mel Gibson will not return, two individuals with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.
Because the “Chicken Run” sequel will go into production next year, one individual explains it’s too early to know about voice casting for an animated film, but Gibson, who voiced the character Rocky in the film from 2000, is not expected to be asked back for the sequel.
It’s also unclear if any of the other voice actors from the original film, which also included Julia Sawalha, Phil Daniels, Imelda Staunton and Timothy Spall, will return for the sequel.

Twenty years after the release of the stop-motion animated hit “Chicken Run,” Aardman studio on Tuesday announced that a sequel will go into production next year for distribution by Netflix (excluding China).
The film will pick up the story of the chickens who pulled off an escape from Tweedy’s farm in the original film where Ginger (voiced in the original by Julia Sawalha) has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!

Though Aaardman’s Chicken Run remains history’s highest-grossing stop-motion animation film, it’s managed to go two decades without producing a sequel. One was originally announced back in April of 2018, but it’s been all quiet on the Chicken Run 2 front since then. Today, that changed with confirmation that Netflix has acquired the sequel’s rights from Studiocanal and Pathé.
The streaming giant chose to reveal its Chicken Run 2 news on the first film’s 20th anniversary. The follow up flick will be helmed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away) and written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’ Farrell and Rachel Tunnard and Nick Park.

20 years to the day after its theatrical release, Aardman Animation Studios has confirmed it will produce a “Chicken Run” sequel, this time backed by Netflix, who will distribute the film globally outside of China.
The sequel announcement was delivered during an Annecy Making Of panel on the festival’s digital platform. The sequel has long been rumored, though Netflix’s involvement is major news.
A Netflix release that coincided with the presentation explained that Studiocanal — which has financed, distributed and sold Aardman productions since 2015’s “Shaun the Sheep Movie” — and Pathé, which backed the original, have closed a deal with Aardman to allow the transfer of the sequel rights to the global streaming giant.

Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants. Animated films have grown ever more artful and affecting as more and more folks realize that it’s never just been a medium for kids, with studios and indies alike creating stop-motion marvels, hand-drawn standouts, and CGI spectacles.
The genre has grown so much since we entered the current century, in fact, that it can be easy to forget the Academy Awards didn’t even recognize animation until 2001. As few as three movies were nominated per year until 2010, but since then animation’s increased prominence has been reflected in the race’s competitiveness. Not every worthy movie could make the cut on either the awards circuit or this list, sadly, but rest assured that “How to Train Your Dragon,” “The Secret of Kells,” “The Breadwinner,” and “Loving Vincent,...

Shaun, everyone’s favorite sheep, is back, and this time he’s facing aliens and robots in “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.”
Directors Will Becher and Richard Phelan teamed together on this film for their first full-length collaboration. While the two have been working at Aardman Studios, Phelan’s background was as a story artist and Becher’s background was in animation. Producers saw the two as a perfect fit since they both had desires to direct.
“Wallace and Gromit” and “Shaun the Sheep” creator Nick Park sat in on initial meetings and story discussions about alien invasions and suggested the title, “Farmageddon.” As Becher and Phelan worked out the story, the idea started coming together and the “Farmageddon” title stuck.

With “Farmageddon,” the stop-motion sequel to the Oscar-nominated “Shaun the Sheep Movie” (now streaming on Netflix), Aardman couldn’t resist embracing sci-fi for the first time. And for newbie feature directors Will Becher and Richard Phelan, it was a rare opportunity to take a deep dive into the genre, especially the beloved films of Steven Spielberg.

Listen, we all knew Hopper was alive. Try as they might to turn “Stranger Things'” latest ending into a cliffhanger, the Duffer Bros. tipped their hand regarding the gruff but lovable sheriff played by David Harbour. I mean, come on. The circumstances of his death were way too suspicious — No shot of the sheriff getting zapped? No body? Please. But if those context clues weren’t enough to quell fans’ tears, the finale’s mid-credits sequence referencing “the American” made sure viewers held out hope for their hero’s return.
And now it’s come. No, Netflix didn’t surprise drop “Stranger Things 4” (can you imagine?), but the streaming giant did unveil a new teaser trailer with one clear purpose: to confirm Jim Hopper’s still alive and kicking.
While “alive and hammering” would be more accurate, we’ll leave the question of what Hopper is doing in Russia up to the detectives out there.

Woolly hero Shaun the Sheep has bleated through many an adventure over several seasons of his own TV series and an Oscar-nominated film, so finding a new, large-canvas escapade for one of Nick Park’s most cherished creations meant searching beyond the confines of Mossy Bottom Farm, or even the planet, and into outer space.
Hopping back onto the big screen, the ovine movie star has a close encounter of the third kind in “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” a quick-witted and uproarious homage to the sci-fi genre like only the stop-motion geniuses at Aardman Animations could imagine and handcraft.
Everyday sheep-nanigans for Shaun (voiced by bah expert Justin Fletcher) and the flock — including but not limited to pulling wild stunts that upset strict sheep dog Bitzer (John Sparkes provides the barks and grunts) — take a turn for the extraterrestrial when a spaceship lands nearby and a UFO craze possesses locals and tourists.

In the summer of 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road wasn’t the only nearly dialogue-free cinematic spectacle that showed how a total command of visual language within a fairly straightforward narrative structure could result in one of the best films of the year. There was also Shaun the Sheep Movie, coming from the immensely talented folks at Aardman Animations and arriving in the United States about six months following a debut in their home country of the United Kingdom. Five years later and they’re now back with the sequel, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, which once again has a delayed release here, coming four months later and, this time, straight to Netflix. Embracing the sci-fi genre, they take out the world-saving doom and frightful creature effects this breed of films is known for, and instead deliver a light, cuddly adventure that’s a step below its predecessor in shear (sorry!

In an era where feature animation often feels as if it’s driven solely by computers, it remains heartening for any fans of the medium that Netflix is supporting artists who are willing to tell animated stories with other methods. Last year, two of the streaming service’s standout films—Klaus and I Lost My Body—utilized hand-drawn styles […]

Fans of 2015’s winsome “Shaun the Sheep Movie” would be forgiven for worrying that its sequel might betray the simple pleasures of the original (and the long-running TV series that inspired it). After all, the previous film was about a mischievous sheep traveling to the big city in order to find his missing farmer, and the new one is subtitled “Farmageddon.” But anyone bracing for the stop-motion equivalent of a Michael Bay movie — anyone convinced that Aardman Animations has abandoned the workaday joys of “Wallace and Gromit” in order to chase the hectic spectacle of most contemporary kids’ cinema — has had the wool pulled over their eyes.
Like just about everything else in the relentlessly charming “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” the title is played for laughs. Splitting the difference between silent cinema slapstick and the cartoon roguishness of Benny Hill, this is still ; it’s still the kind...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
The January doldrums have finished and Oscar season’s close has arrived. So say goodbye to the critical darlings and dump month horrors because cinemas nationwide are ready to deliver super-antiheroes (more on them below), familiar claymation friends (A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon opens February 14), and videogame panache (the reworked Sonic the Hedgehog opens February 14 too).
That doesn’t, however, mean there won’t be some indie and foreign holdovers to satiate the appetites of cinephiles fighting against the studio takeover tooth and nail. There’s plenty...
