Amy Adams-vehicle Nightbitch, starring Amy Adams, has landed a Dec. 6, 2024, release in cinemas during the heart of awards season. The Searchlight Pictures and Annapurna film was originally intended to debut on Hulu, but will now get a theatrical release.

Nightbitch is an adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s 2001 satirical novel about a woman who finds herself in a mind-bending and energy-sapping routine of raising a toddler in a suburban home while her husband is on lengthy business trips. But her new domesticity takes a surreal turn when she slowly realizes that she may be transforming into a protective canine.

Marielle Heller broke out big at Sundance back in 2015 with coming-of-ager The Diary of a Teenage Girl – the pic received a lot of fanfare and the Special Jury Award for Cinematography (Brandon Trost). Bel Powley Says She Was ‘Blown Away by How Contemporary’ Making Holocaust Drama ‘A Small Light’ Felt
This story about Bel Powley and “A Small Light” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Like so many of us, Bel Powley read “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank when she was in school. But she was less familiar with the woman responsible for the world’s awareness of the diary: Miep Gies. The secretary of Otto Frank, Gies helped hide the Frank family from the Nazis for two years in Amsterdam and kept Anne’s diary safe after the family was arrested in 1945.
“I know a lot about this part of history — the big historical and political backdrop — but I didn’t know anything about Miep or the Dutch resistance,” Powley said. So playing Gies in the National Geographic limited series “A Small Light” was a daunting experience — but also a deeply rewarding one. “It’s so rare...

Justin H.Min, Emmy nominee D’Arcy Carden, Nesta Cooper and Griffin Newman (The Tick) round out the cast.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Anne Frank continues to resonate as perhaps the most famous symbol of Jewish suffering and persecution in the face of the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust during World War II. It was her teenage diary, after all, that remains perhaps the most vivid description of what it was like to live under Nazi occupation – specifically in Amsterdam between 1942 and ’44, while her family was in hiding and she wrote her famed remembrance of being sheltered out of view until a betrayal led to their being discovered.
It was a woman named Miep Gies, however, who provided a first-hand aural witness’s account of those hiding out in what came to be known as the Secret Annex. It’s her tale that’s told in “A Small Light,” a powerful eight-part limited series from NatGeo that premieres with a pair of installments on May 1 and streams the next day on Disney+. It...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

“My Year of Dicks” is headed to Hulu on Feb. 17.
The short film that tickled many at the 2023 Oscar nominations as Riz Ahmed read (and giggled at) its title hails from FX Productions. It was initially produced as a part of the Fxx animated anthology series “Cake” before the company encouraged writer Pamela Ribon and her team to take it on the film festival circuit, where it picked up enough awards and attention to land a nod for best animated short.
Based on Ribon’s memoir “Notes to Boys (And Other Things I Shouldn’t Share in Public),” “My Year of Dicks” is a romantic comedy set in 1991. Pam is trying very hard to lose her virginity, but it doesn’t match up to her fantasies. While searching for her ultimate partner and going through puberty, she meets up with goths, skaters, indie film snobs and straight edge posers and...

When Pamela Ribon set out to adapt her memoir into an animated short, producer Jeanette Jeanenne suggested director Sara Gunnarsdóttir to direct. This collaboration led to a comedic animated short that won awards at multiple festivals before finally receiving an Oscar nomination. Deadline: How did this short come about? When did you decide to make an animated short based on your memoir?
Pamela Ribon: The idea for the short came about from FX networks, when we had been talking about what I could try in the animation pipeline.

This year, women directors – and their women-centric subjects – swept the awards at Sundance Film Festival. Three women directors – Madeleine Gavin, Maryam Keshavarz, and Noora Niasari – won Audience Awards for their films on North Korea (“Beyond Utopia”), intergenerational motherhood (“The Persian Version”), and custody in diaspora (“Shayda”). Portraits of masculinity were also celebrated as well. First-time feature filmmaker Sing J. Lee won the Directing Award for his touching portrait of masculinity and fatherhood in “The Accidental Getaway Driver,” while Sauvnik Kaur’s intimate documentary on brotherhood “Against The Tide” took home a Special Jury Award. After two years of isolation and virtual festival-ing, it seems that stories of tenderness appealed over aggressive storytelling at Park City this year.
“This year’s Festival has been an extraordinary experience,” said Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute CEO. “The artists that comprise the 2023 Sundance Film Festival have demonstrated a sense of urgency and dedication to excellence in independent film.

Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Now, the fact that a whopping 96 of Gold Derby’s 2023 DGA Awards predictions odds-makers have her as their top choice in the rookie race should translate to a decisive win.
This category’s current lineup is the only one in its eight-year history to include just one male nominee. Last year’s unprecedented field of six consisted of two men and four women, including Gyllenhaal. Our odds show Wells far outpacing female contenders Alice Diop,...

Roughly five minutes into the presentation of the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards, Riz Ahmed announced the category for animated short film. When he read the fourth nominee, its title was so unexpected — “My Year of Dicks” — that Ahmed and co-presenter Allison Williams had to pause their presentation as the audience at the Academy’s headquarters in Beverly Hills worked through their giggles.
Elsewhere in Los Angeles, Pamela Ribon, the film’s creator and writer — who based the short on her memoir “Notes to Boys (and Other Things I Shouldn’t Share in Public)” — was celebrating the nomination with her mother, husband and child. Icelandic Director Sara Gunnarsdóttir’s new animation My Year of Dicks is an adaptation of a chapter from Pamela Ribon’s memoir Notes To Boys (And Other Things I Shouldn’t Share In Public). It’s about a fifteen year old version of Ribon going through a burgeoning sexual awakening and the desire to lose her virginity despite the slim pickings on offer in her neighbourhood on the outskirts of Houston in the early 90s. Taking a multi-faceted style, Gunnarsdóttir enlisted the talent of a cadre of animators to bring her vision to life and paint Ribon in the varied, all-encompassing light that is reflected in the memoir. Dn spoke with Gunnarsdóttir as My Year of Dicks arrives online, in the wake of it being shortlisted for this year’s Oscars, to discuss the method she took to select her animators, the perks of collaborating with everyone remotely, and the...

I'm of the humble opinion that there's no such thing as too much Amy Adams. The six-time Academy Award-nominated actress is set to star in the Annapurna and Searchlight Pictures film "Nightbitch," based on Rachel Yoder's popular debut novel. Director Marielle Heller has adapted the book into a screenplay, with the film set to debut on Hulu as part of its release schedule. Unfortunately, we don't know how far away that release will be, but we do have some details that will hopefully help explain...

Amy Adams is starring in a brand-new movie called "Nightb*tch" that will stream on Hulu. The film, which will be written and directed by Marielle Heller, will go into production this fall with plans to stream on Hulu in 2023.
The movie's producers describe the film as a "darkly comic neo-horror," and it's based on the 2021 Rachel Yoder novel of the same name. The book is about a new mother who - struggling with the demands of raising a toddler, trying to make art, and trying to connect with other moms - becomes convinced she's turning into a dog. It's terrifying, but she also finds peace and connection with the fierceness of the canine within. Jason Ritter was previously announced to be joining Adams in the film as her character's husband.
"Rachel Yoder's book took my breath away," Heller said in a statement. "I haven't felt this way about a...

Two years after Amy Adams’ production company Bond Group, along with Annapurna, acquired the rights to the novel “Nightbitch,” the film is finally howling straight ahead.
Searchlight Pictures has officially acquired the neo-horror thriller, already written and soon to be directed by Marielle Heller. Annapurna will produce the film, which is based on Rachel Yoder’s fall 2021 debut novel of the same name. The film will be released on Hulu, with other release plans to follow, per Searchlight.
“Nightbitch” tells the story of a stay-at-home mother (six-time Oscar nominee Adams) who begins to embrace the inherent feral power that comes with being a parent. When her husband travels for work, the unnamed lead character is isolated in the suburbs with only her two-year-old son for company. Soon, she starts to become convinced that she’s slowly turning into a canine and eventually seeks help to hide her feral alter ego from a mommy support group.

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

As we all found out this past October Marielle Heller is a woman of many, perchance infinite, talents. Since 2015, Heller has been dazzling cinephiles everywhere with her work as a writer/director. The Diary of a Teenage Girl was one of the best American debuts of the decade. If possible, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood were even better, analyzing complicated real-life personalities with as much humanistic gentility as razor-sharp precision. All that, and we now know that Heller is also an amazing actress. Returning to her first vocation in splendorous fashion, Marielle Heller delivers the best performance in the popular Netflix awards juggernaut The Queen's Gambit…...

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the creative minds behind “Bridesmaids” and “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” are reteaming on a movie about Cinderella’s evil stepsisters.
Set at Disney, Wiig and Mumolo will write the screenplay for the musical comedy that reimagines the classic fairytale from the perspective of the two siblings who didn’t get their happily ever after.
Wiig and Mumolo aren’t expected to act in the film, which is still in the early stages of development. Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are producing the movie via Gloria Sanchez Productions.
The two have been friends for decades, first meeting at the L.A. improv group The Groundlings in the early 2000s. In 2011, they wrote “Bridesmaids,” one of the most successful R-rated comedies in decades. The film — starring Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy — earned nearly $300 million at the box office and scored an Oscar nomination for original screenplay.
