What white nonsense is this?!
adampkalb7 April 2021
I hate VeggieTales in the House because it makes all of the characters look and sound too different. The casting department was too cheap to cast more than one replacement male and female actor for all the original characters not voiced by Mike or Phil! You can hear that problem in almost all of Tress MacNeille's female character voices, for example. Junior Asparagus, a young boy character, sounds too boyish, and not girly enough like the way Lisa's Junior originally sounded, Laura sounds uncomfortably high-pitched, and Madame Blueberry's new voice doesn't even try to have a French accent. The only female veggie whom Tress MacNeille can have sound close to her original voice is Petunia Rhubarb. Even with Phil and Mike voicing their own characters again, you can tell VeggieTales in the House has terrible voice direction, particularly in Archibald's voice. I liked having Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki reprise most of their characters in this series because that at least gave VeggieTales in the House some of the same identity that the original VeggieTales had, but it is very sad that, while they still get a credit for VeggieTales in the House being based on characters created by them, they don't write any VeggieTales in the House episodes of their own. However, Tim Hodge and Brian K. Roberts still got to direct some episodes, so they might be decent and resemble the spirit of the original film series more.

Like many VeggieTales fans who dislike in the House & City, and possibly Noah's Ark, we believe VeggieTales in the House/City takes place in an alternate universe from the veggies who acted out or experienced all of the stories in the original video series. From Where's God When I'm S-Scared up to Beauty and the Beet, as well as The VeggieTales Show, because all of the veggies have different designs and live in a little city below the countertop, which was only used to host Noah's Ark in this new world. Even if you can get past the bizarre new cheap animation style and different character voices, the writing is just not there. VeggieTales in the House & City has the bizarre energy of Fanboy & Chum Chum, which does not bode well with the original VeggieTales, and most of the time, Larry is an idiot and the stories are very uncreative and it is easy to guess what the lesson will be by the third minute of eleven. Furthermore, I feel very bad for Phil Vischer with VeggieTales in the House being more "de-Goded" than the qubo TV broadcasts of stories from VeggieTales videos in 23-minute episodes. Occasionally, a Bible verse will be read, but in an off-the-walls show like this that purged the religious aspects of VeggieTales, it doesn't feel the same to end every episode with the same "God made you special and He loves you very much" closing line from the original show.

Still, there are some things that I do enjoy and miss about VeggieTales in the House. It is much more watchable than the Japanese and Chinese spin-offs of Lilo & Stitch, The 2016 Powerpuff Girls, and My Little Pony: Pony Life, which are all bad spinoffs or reboots that butcher their Intellectual Property's predecessor very hard. I realized that there are some salvageable aspects of VeggieTales in the House since Callie Flower was good enough to come into the prime VeggieTales universe in The VeggieTales Show. Motato, Gary Garlic, Mr. & Tiny Pea, Shem, Granny Asparagus, Officer Wedge, and Ichabeezer are all other entertaining characters I may like to see redesigned one day in The VeggieTales Show. I still have a bit of respect for VeggieTales in the House for trying some new things. Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki definitely did not like Dreamworks and Netflix butchering their property with less intelligent writing, but maybe they enjoyed the new experience it gave them because, they had never voice acted in a half-hour Nickelodeon-type series. Phil Vischer pitched VeggieTales to Nickelodeon in 1991, but Nick was not interested in early computer animation one decade before Jimmy Neutron. I liked hearing their classic character voices in a slice-of-life setting, but in the House certainly could have used some better writing that felt more like VeggieTales even in their weird wacky city. VTitH is also worth watching because Phil and Mike also both voice a new recurring character, Phil Vischer is Granny Asparagus and Mike Nawrocki is Officer Wedge. I also liked having Rob Paulsen, who voiced Finnegan J. Beet from Beauty and the Beet, use the same voice for Ichabeezer in VeggieTales in the House because the same grouchy voice suited both characters. I was also surprised at how much I liked some of this show's new characters, like Motato, Tiny Pea and Callie Flower.

Oh, it's a wonderous place alright...
PurplePickle20 December 2014
A wonderously generic and juvenile place, that is. I may be biased towards the original characters to a large degree since I grew up with the show, but speaking from the point of view of a lifelong animation fan who watches kids shows on a regular basis, this is abysmal.

Of course the most glaring problem with the new series is the character design, it's the big thing that everyone complains about. To put it simply, they're creepy. Hyper-realistic eyes may look good on more complex and humanoid characters, but on the minimalist veggie bodies, they're oversized and dead looking. The old characters had large eyes as well, but they were more cartoony and simple, and despite the creator's claims, they were about ten times more expressive than the eyes of the new ones.

While the animation is the most obvious problem, the biggest one by far would be the complete lack of original writing. Every single episode so far has a story that you've seen a hundred times before, and nothing is done to make it more interesting, it's just the same, generic junk you see in every cheap cartoon ever.

In addition to the plots, the way certain characters are written bother me as well, particularly Larry. His iconic obliviousness has been replaced by what I can only describe as severe mental degradation. Larry is obviously still an "adult" cucumber, but he acts in a way more fitting to a small child. There is a way to make characters relatable to kids without them turning into childish morons. Need proof? Watch any classic VT movie and see how the silly, kid appeal character is supposed to be done.

The rest of the characters are as bland as streamed vegetables. The writers have tried to give some of the older characters with little personality to speak of from the classics (the female ones specifically) and in doing so either made them somehow even more one- dimensional (Petunias) or extremely annoying (Laura). Mr. Nezzer's new personality also really bothers me. They renamed him for absolutely no reason and turned him into a complete jerk. It was quite shocking to see the affable Nezzer cheer on a fight or give Larry and Laura an angry glare when they ask to pet his dog thing.

VeggieTales started out as the Christian answer to the mindless cartoons of the era and the cheesy Christian kids shows that were out at the time. The originals were full of wit and charm, and despite the primitive animation, people loved the series for its humor and utilization of classic stories from the Bible to give moral lessons to kids rather than just entertainment.

This show is the complete antithesis of that.

This show is annoying and obnoxious, it gets up in your face with its annoyance and obnoxiousness and doesn't let up until the credits roll. The jokes are dull and stupid, and you've seen them all before. The characters are unrecognizable and irritating. This show is like the equivalent to that one really annoying little cousin who tells you the same jokes you've heard a million times every time you meet and can never seem to shut up or sit still.

If, for some horrible reason, Phil Vischer had passed away after the release of Jonah, (not wishing death, I love you, Phil) he would be spinning his grave. This show fails on every single level, and I really do have a sneaking suspicion that he and Mike regret their involvement in it, because it goes against everything they worked so hard to create. Phil was once quoted as saying he felt as though VeggieTales was a failure at teaching what he wanted it to teach, (The Bible) so I wouldn't be surprised if his biggest motivation to help create this series was money rather than love and devotion

This show is terrible at everything it tries to do, and if I worked at Netflix I'd order it to be cancelled, but since I can't do that I'll just say this: don't watch this if you love the original series. You will be disappointed and angry. But if you want something for your kid to watch to keep him quiet for 22 minutes, be my guest. Just don't be surprised if he keeps having nightmares about giant, hyper-realistic cartoon produce coming to get him.

Not the same as the original, but still good
tmangum812 December 2014
My two older children grew up with the older version of VeggieTales. They are not big fans of the new opening, but I'm sure it will grow on them. Although they were hesitant to watch it after the opening, they have given the new show a chance and seem to like it. My 7 year old loves it! As one of the previous reviewers points out--it is not the original VeggieTales. However, it is not bad just because it is not the same. There is nothing wrong with bringing a family friendly series to a new generation. Great job, Big Idea!!

It is refreshing to see Netflix has picked up a series with a positive message for kids (and adults).

Veggietales R.I.P. 1993-2014
mylittleboreal18 December 2014
Hello, this is PrincessAurorus and I'm here to review this show that definitely needs a sign for its ruined style towards the fact it had nothing to do with the designs and the humor itself. "If you throw the Rotten Tomatoes. If those jokes can't make you smile. If you hate those yams or potatoes? Stay away from it's own style." So what's it like watching this torture for those who grew up watching the original. Well we get Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki to voice the cast and-

Whu? Okay, two things. Num. 1, why is Mr. Nezzer named Ichabeezer? Can't they at least to a different name like Ebeneezer or Nebby K. Nezzer? Num. 2, why does he have a old man accent? Who played his voice? Rob Paulsen? Yeah the one who did Technus and I can't believe he voiced him. Well that was off... Who did Junior's voice. Tress McNeille? Are you kidding me? I can at least think of other actresses that did a better job. Elizabeth Daily, Tara Strong, Cree Summer, just to name a few. So why on earth would they do this to Veggietales. Even the olive hound looks scary.

The French Peas look awful and Madame Blueberry is way off from having a french-accent as Jimmy Gourd looks like the vegetable version of Freddy Fazbear. Like I said, it was stupid, unfunny, the songs are bad, and unwatchable to the fact I had a meltdown after this came out!

If you like to Waltz with Potatoes...Then avoid this show.
Devo10626 November 2014
DISCLAIMER:Following review is from the view point of someone who watched the original when I was a child.

If you were a big fan of the original series and you've come here to get a nostalgic re imagining of the beloved show. TURN BACK! I tried to watch all four of the episodes but could not suffer through all of them. I made it through 1 and a half before I had to stop. This version does not live up in any aspect. SONGS, terrible; not memorable in the slightest and seems completely arbitrary. MESSAGE, of the 3 stories I watched I'm not even entirely sure what the faith based lessons they were supposed to be teaching were. Or how they would apply to a child's life! The bible verses they give seem like an after-thought to the each of the central stories. HUMOR, this point really kills it. I may have smirked a few times throughout but mostly it was from the sheer incredulous plot lines. A Mustache cream? Could be funny but handled horribly in this case.

The entire show seems dumbed down. Most of the characters are there but they are hollow unfunny shells. I think the writes serious underestimated what they have. If they'd have taken us who watched it as children into account and made a few nods to the old show or at least kept its best parts, they could have really capitalized on the older generation. But instead they've completely isolated us with this water down stuff. I mean I'm all for making changes but...The new "theme song"? I use that term lightly because it is perhaps the worst theme song in the existence of theme songs. I watched it not 4 minutes ago but the only impact it left was how terrible and bland it was. Silly Songs with Larry? Nowhere to be seen. In the original Larry was indeed silly, and some what scatter brained but I always thought he seemed like a goofy adult. Now he seems like a mentally handicapped adolescent. A true insult to what the show used to be.

The original had sketches based on the bible some were stories right of the bible. When I study now I still remember them! They truly taught me things and helped me learn. I don't see how this could help anyone. Sure it may be leaps and bounds better than the rest of TV programing for kids, but it is still SEVERELY lacking. To parents; stick with the original. To my fellows who enjoyed the show in the past. Say away from this, insulting, boring mess. To the writes of this show. Get your act together. This is just....Awful. How could you.

Why, Netflix, why?
shaines1217 January 2015
Why did Netflix turn a classic, fun for both kids and adults, Bible show into to a generic, 1980's style, mind-numbing "toon"? (It is not even worthy of the word "cartoon".) If you have never seen the original, it is a wasted half hour. If you have seen the original, it is a nightmare you wish you could unsee.

Why is everyone nearly the same size? Why is Mr. Nezzar fat? He's not a gourd, he's a zucchini. When did he get crabby? Why is Laura wider at her head than her end? Why is she so tall? Why does Larry act younger than Junior? Why does Archibald have a roundish head and a neck? Why does Madame Blueberry sound the way she does? Why do the French Peas have mustaches? Why does Bob act like a kid? Why are the stories so forgettable that I can't describe the plot one hour after watching it? Why are the songs so forgettable?

Dictionary websites should include images of the original Veggie Tales and of this monstrosity under the term "selling out".

What Happened????
bonniejoy-978-6876313 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It hurts to look at this show and every second I feel like someone is punishing me for being intelligent, for loving Dreamworks Studios, and for loving the original show at all. Yes, this show was produced by Dreamworks Studios, the same company that produced movies like Prince of Egypt, Megamind, and How to Train Your Dragon. Let that sink in. Dreamworks often had a way of creating movies that made families enjoy together, rarely ever talked down to a child, had ground breaking animation (especially any flight scenes), and are such beloved family classics. This show on the other hand talks down to children, the stories are horribly done, and the animation's scary and is some of the worst I've ever seen. IT'S 2016!!! YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER!!! That is only the first of my major problems with this show.

Second, and most importantly, what have you done to VeggieTales? I'm not going to act like the original VeggieTales was always a masterpiece. At the start, they had fairly interesting computer animation. Not sure if I can say it was groundbreaking, but it was unique. And the way the characters were written was timeless and priceless. The main characters: Bob the Tomato was down to earth and a great storyteller, and Larry was mostly the comic relief who occasionally had a serious role. It doesn't sound like much, but somehow the producers of Big Idea knew how to make all this work out through well thought out storytelling, timeless original songs, and morals that still stay with us even as adults.

As the years moved on, not only did the animation change to better, but the stories became hit and miss. Then suddenly out of nowhere came VeggieTales in the House and Noah's Ark with horrendous animation, cringeworthy storytelling, changing character identities, annoying pop music, and slapping on morals at the last minute. Let's look into those aspects one at a time (already covered the animation). 1) Characters: This was where Dreamworks clearly didn't care about Phil Visher's work. Bob has become too goofy and Larry has somehow become underdeveloped to a dumber and dumber level. I never thought someone could make Larry childishly stupid, but somehow they pulled it off. It's like a three year old rewrote these characters. Also, why are they too bouncy? I know they hop because they don't have arms or legs, but good grief, these guys are bouncing like basketballs on steroids. They look exactly like waving keys in front of a child's face just to keep them awake. And those French Peas are now racist, the same reason Khali got deleted from the show. Really hypocritical of you, Dreamworks. 2) Pop Songs: Just because something is "hip" for kids doesn't mean it will always interest them. These songs go on for too long, none of them memorable, and don't add to whatever story fills up the episodes. The original VeggieTales wrote songs, not just to keep kids awake, but to add to the story, express a character's emotions at the appropriate moments, and give them something to sing along to. What are kids going to remember? "God is Bigger than the Boogie Man" or "My Puppy Best Friend"? 3) Morals: First I want to ask if I should be grateful that Qwerty the Computer's not in this show? At least they don't mess him up, but they still horribly mess up the moral. The original show built up the message in a way kid would understand, so that when Qwerty brought up the verse at the end of the show, they would hopefully live by it. Whether it was about obeying your parents, careful about your actions (lying, greediness, etc), "turn the other cheek", God has a plan and purpose for you, and perhaps the most adult "your life is meaningful, even when you don't see it". How did we go from that to Bob doesn't need mustache or glasses to look awesome, "whoever can be trusted with guppies can be trusted with puppies", or cooperate always? I'm not kidding, these are the morals and stories of the shows. Also, this was possibly the first time I got angry when they slapped on "God made you special and He loves you very much." I don't hate the theme at all, I adore it, but the way the show had abused all the other morals, it's near impossible to hate every time there's a wink at the better show. Plus, it feels like this show isn't built up on that moral the same way Big Idea would build up to it, but rather slapped on at the last minute, because they forgot to add it.

Even if they weren't based on a beloved children's show, this is still insulting as a whole. It says "You're stupid" to children and slaps their parents on the head with a mallet for sitting through it. Big Idea had this belief that they could make parents and kids learn and entertain at the same time and often would succeed. It boggles me how Phil Visher and Mike could go along with Dreamworks and watch their masterpiece getting slaughtered. And it equally amazes me that Dreamworks would be behind this abomination of animation and storytelling. If you like this, okay, good for you. I personally hate this, not just for putting my childhood in a blender and pressing grind, but for insulting my intelligence on a Disney Jr. level.

VeggieTales' awful designs
Leifj20091 April 2015
The show looks like an anime rip-off. Here are some things: 1. Bob and Larry has eyebrows and tongue. 2. Larry looks like a pickle. 3. Petunia sounded like a teenager. 4. Madame Blueberry sounded too British, not French. 5. Junior Asparagus sounded like Jimmy Neutron. 6. Laura the Carrot sounded like female version of Timmy Turner. 7. Archibald looks too skinny and his British accent sounded like he had a frog in his throat. 8. Jean Claude and Philipe looked like circus freaks. 9. Ichabod "Ichabeezer" Money Nezzer sounded like Carl Wheezer, who went for a drink at a bar. 10. Jimmy has cravings or some sort. His brother, Jerry, is too stupid like Sheen from Jimmy Neutron. AND THEIR TEETH LOOKED LIKE VAMPIRE TEETH!!!!!

And that's why, Big Idea should replace Dreamworks with Paramount Pictures/Animation. They love racist stuff.

Fun Show!
smeemctyre1 December 2014
I have to disagree with what the previous reviewer wrote. This show is really fun, goofy, silly, all the things the old show was. I'm only disappointed that there are so few episodes because I know my kids will watch them to an annoying extent.

Devo106 kept comparing it to the original shows. This wasn't meant to be a reboot. We can't always have Silly Songs With Larry. But this show is like the older ones. Maybe they hadn't watched the older ones in a long time, but my kids watch them ALL THE TIME. This new series has all the same silly humor, and the same silly Larry that the old "series" had.

Awesome Fresh New Look At Childhood!
mejoradadj10 December 2014
At first when I heard about Veggietales getting a new look, I was worried at first. But when I saw it for the first time, I instantly liked it. This is a great step for the Veggietales franchise and I love the creators' idea of streaming it on Netflix. Now kids and people like me that loved watching Veggietales growing will getting to take it anywhere and anytime. I love it when they made this cartoon more of a slapstick and not that dull. I even like it how the veggies are looking more alive and fresh (especially with the "creepy" eye colors). Season one was alright but it need more zing to the show and more clever writings. Well anyway, the show was great and I hope they continue making this because I believe that this a great way to keep Veggietales alive and hopefully we see Bob and Larry as the next cartoon icons.

A challenging philosophic masterpiece
ecmelton-186-10504910 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It's interesting that on the show Veggie-tales, a Christian program, all of the characters are cultivated vegetables, meaning that they were all the product of selective breeding, hybridization, and genetic engineering. None of them exist in nature (biblical Creation.) They were all made by man's intervention, not by God's. The concept of "vegetables" in itself is a human construct that has no meaning in the natural world. What does god mean to something that was not created by him? Do the vegetables even have souls that would be recognized by God, and if not is their piousness in vain? Would they act differently if they knew this. The show is trafficking heavily in Nietzschean ideas found in The Gay Science ranging from the ubermensch to the death of god and mortality beyond good and evil.

Cool and simple show
abraaopereiras18 March 2017
This show is very cool.

I think it is very simple and focused for determined objective. This objective is the lesson finale. In the middle they producters inserts some funny, silly and various things...

Honestly i don't know what someone want to see in the animated show for children. That is, in my point of view, very simple and creative.

In the my opinion many of the bad comments come from children growing.. And looking for the past and thinking: that time was so good.. And never more will come back.

To end: i consider this a very simple kid show and with trust to children watch. And this is rare today.

Wonderful refresh of a classic and inspiring series
jeremyandrebecca5 August 2015
Those who are complaining about the new Veggietales series are stuck in the past and obviously didn't learn enough life lessons from the original series. Why on earth would you so vocally tear down the hard work of good people with meaningful intentions, especially when the production value of the new short episodes has gone way up, and nothing is preventing you from reliving your fond memories with the original material which is also freely available on Netflix? Veggietales is still producing programming similar to its classic material. However, for this series of shorts, they are doing something new. You can't fault them for this, unless the end result is really bad. But it's not! In fact, it's very, very good.

Look, as a fan of Veggietales from their beginning, I'll admit to being a little leery with the formula being tampered with, and the design changes which admittedly don't work as well in still images. But, when fully animated and rendered, the new designs actually hold up very well.

As far as the content, the pace is quicker, the editing is zippier, the overall feel is perhaps even a bit loonier. But, the heart and great moral lessons are all still there. And, their theme of "God made you special and loves you very much" is still present. So, it's hard to understand why anyone would so passionately protest against the updated version.

My kids and I absolutely love the new series. It's full of life and fun... and it maintains all the great values of the original series. But, it is also more accessible to modern audiences. I can't really fault the producers for working to broaden their audience, and I'm not sure why anyone else would either.

This show is a good cartoon inspiring series
kristinadkittensworth12 April 2015
These episodes are pretty good so far and at least I got used to redesigns which inspired me to make my own cartoon human style in which I mix 3 or 4 styles into 1 and it was like a combination of "Zig and Sharko", "Tuff Puppy", "Fairly Oddparents", "Powerpuff Girls" and "Dexter's Laboratory" styles. Once I did one human style try on myself and now the fans of Veggie Tales like my new human style so they ask me to draw them in my style with their favorite Veggie Tales characters in redesign forms as their veggie partners.

I am starting to love that show and I love how animation turn out well with all the animation texture, lighting, shading, shadowing, overlapping on Petunia's long hair which looks pretty difficult to animate and I also how in one of the episode make the tea pot look realistic and shiny like from live action if you happen to saw one. This animation turns out great and inspiring. In my animation classes including Storyboarding, character development and more, my teachers love the VTitH-like human style on my characters and Veggie Tales redesigns drawings and they said this human character style I had created and even the Veggie Tales redesign looks are very appealing.

So if you are into animation and such, well, it's hard to explain and this series on Netflix is not bad at all. They are very enjoyable and to study animation, animating texture, lighting and more.

It is better than Sonic Boom
jgarland-8053729 November 2023
To be honest I really like VeggieTales In The House sure is not as good as the original VeggieTales but it was miles better than Sonic Boom because it has Lessons while could've been a bit better it does help me to get a job, the songs really slaps, I didn't mind the redesigns, I like the cartonny feel of the animation, biblical verses, they got the guts to have characters their flaws, the voices are pretty good, the new characters are really interesting especially Ichabeezer while replacing Mr. Nezzer is questionable at best he has a good character development and he has a good heart. I just miss the show very much I really Netflix series characters returning but I'm afraid that's not going to happen because of TBN revival series while a mixed bag but it doesn't feels like the continuation of the original series feels like a 20 year old reunion reboot which already seen many times.

Love the Netflix version!!
nabbott-8214922 February 2021
My son absolutely loves the Netflix Veggie Tales and so do I! I'm typically not one who can take any remakes seriously, they usually just give me a generic vibe (I buy generic stuff so I'm not meaning it in an ew generic way lol). It's funny, now I feel like the classic Veggie Tales seems generic (old school Veggie Tale lovers don't be mad)! My son loves the colors, the songs and he loves the characters! He's been watching it daily since he was a few months old, he's almost 5! I don't mind because it does have humor throughout that is still kid appropriate but gives me a good laugh! Of course, I also like the message/lesson in every episode and being centered around Christianity.

A show your kids can watch worry free
larias-3949418 October 2020
First of all, growing up on VeggieTales, yes this is not as Christ-centered as the original. But it's clean entertainment for kids that links to God whether through the classic "remember kids, God made you special, and he loves you very much" or by a scripture. This broadens the audience by having a classic cartoon feel and some talented voice acting! Recognized some of them from other childhood shows! Highly recommend.

This show uses too much adult code words adults would love to hear from the young humans. And it's a winning game any way you put it. Because even if the children learn the controlled vocabulary of their adult jail masters, the adults still get to enjoy countless hours of being disappointed, let down, whatever.

The show is unnatural in speech. And the animation is very weird given the vegetables do not have visible hands and legs even if they do seem to use hands and legs.

Still, nice to have some variation from the killer robots routine.
