Just a reflection of a genius writing to genius plot .
Aktham_Tashtush24 February 2015
The plot is just getting more and more thrilling, amazing writing, problem then solve it , then problem , then solve ... etc.

Things are getting more tension, and a glimpse on the copyrights law and how Saul just shove that up right the big companies A** ..

Honestly the rating is high and constant i believe no episode will get lower than 9 or 8 ,, just as we saw in breaking bad.

I think with 4 episodes so far , the show will go up to 4 maybe 5 seasons. and still expecting to see more familiar faces on the upcoming episodes.

I'm darn satisfied so far and i think i will be till 6 April when the season wrap up. bravo Vince Gilligan ;)

Jimmy And His Schemes!
gab-1471215 April 2020
Vince Gilligan is a genius! How he is able to come up with these plot points and excellent line of dialogue is either the work of a madman....or a genius. The fourth episode of the first season, "Hero" is yet another work from this Albert Einstein of television. One wouldn't think that this prequel would ever come close to the adventures of Walter White....well I think it has. This particular episode does play down the drama and ups the comedy, but we are in for a treat. In addition to Bob Odenkirk, Michael McKean as Chuck stands out this episode. He provides many of the comedic lines, but also delivers a very tense running sequence wrapped in a space blanket. Finally, the episode shows you how clever Jimmy McGill really is, pulling off some complicated cons.

The episode's opening starts off with one of those cons Jimmy used to do against people in an alleyway. Very clever, I gotta admit. Then, we roar right back to present day (episode-wise). The Kettlemans have to deal with the aftermath of their kidnapping and they compare the situation to human slavery (LOL). Nacho is released from prison and is very hesitant to believe Jimmy. Jimmy has a thing against Chuck's law partner, Howard Hamlin. He drives Hamlin to the brink, especially when he puts up a giant billboard. He has an injunction filed against him which forces Jimmy to take down the billboard, but he apparently saves someone in the process...which may lead him to more clients as Jimmy's answering machine gets busy.

The episode takes more of a comedy route and I'm all down for that. I laughed often and hard. I took great pleasure in watching Jimmy pull of his cons and embarrassing the weasel that is Howard. I am also intrigued by Jimmy's taste in cinema. He quotes Spartacus the wrong way here. Kim, however, has a great taste. The Thing is an 80's classic. The cliffhanger is great! Maybe Jimmy will be yet again a disappointment to his brother. Only time will tell.

My Grade: A

Once again, pretty darn good.
PulpPhiction24 February 2015
I've been writing reviews for each episode of this show thus far and plan to do so for as many consecutive future episodes as I can, but I'm concerned I'm just going to give the same review every week, because every week this show is just really good.

I won't give away any plot details of the episode, so I will just have to try and cover as much ground as I can without spoiling anything.

As far as acting goes (this will come as no surprise), the main cast is excellent. Bob Odenkirk is, as usual, great. Many feared he wouldn't have been able to take on the character in the lead role and thought it could only work when Saul (or Jimmy), is a side character. As far as the rest go, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael McKean all stood out in this episode with very impressive performances.

The cinematography is outstanding, just like Breaking Bad's was. Same goes for the music. I really find it difficult to find much wrong with this show so far, and I think these first four episodes are probably even better than Breaking Bad's were. I can't wait for next week and the rest of the series. Thanks Gilligan and Gould!

Saul Goes Aggressive
Hitchcoc27 April 2018
This is such fun because McGill is a great character. For all his bluster, he is quite down to earth. He sees the utter stupidity of the world he lives in. In Episode 4, he takes his ill gotten gain and starts to make himself respectable and in the face of his sworn enemies. He also is able to toughen up and stand in the face of Nacho and the boys. There is always that moment when one has to accept the danger and go ahead. There is a scene in front of a billboard that McGill has leased that is hilarious. He shows his mastery of manipulation as he lays a foundation for the future. Knowing these writers, something is on its way. This episode has some incredibly hilarious moments, but I can't help but think that things will get darker.

More Comedy Than Dark, But Still Entertaining
r-kerr099225 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
OVERVIEW With the revelation of the Kettleman's and their embezzled millions, Jimmy finds himself coming to an arrangement with them. Now having a catalyst to building McGill's law firm, in a way that I didn't quite expect, as well as trying to get Nacho off his case (pardon the terrible lawyer pun).

NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS This episode took a more comedic route, with the real-time opening scene of the Kettleman's trying to justify themselves to Jimmy, comparing their situation of that to human slavery. It's a really funny scene that sets the tone for the next 45 minutes. The opening flash back scene was also a nice touch, with young Jimmy giving his first reveal of the meaning behind Saul Goodman, a nice play on words, 'S'All Good, man'.

There were some scenes that did make me really laugh, in particular the final scene when his brother Chuck wearing his 'radiation protective' jacket when attempting to go outside and retrieve a neighbour's paper, with the intense vision and music surrounding Chuck, targeting all the ways who could be affected by radiation, and in parallel his neighbour watching him run around the street with tin foil wrapped round him. It really was hilarious.

A majority of the episode revolved around Jimmy spending his new found mini-fortune. By building himself and business as an exact replica of his rival Hamlin's, with the original thought of proving a point in using his name, but with a grander publicity stunt in mind. It really does mirror the opening scene (the 'Rolex' scam) emphasizing McGill's talents as a master manipulator and con man.

However, there was a great dramatic scene between Nacho and McGill. After Jimmy is able to free Nacho with the Kettleman's pleading ignorant to the kidnapping, Nacho tries to unnerve Jimmy by telling him he knows that he warned the Kettleman's in the first place. Jimmy finally got some courage and didn't back down to the intimidation. He tells Nacho that it was his own fault for being caught by the neighbour who called the police. It was a great scene that shows McGill had some backbone, and knows that if it wasn't for him, Nacho would be in prison.

PERFORMANCES Again, changing performance wise. Bob Odenkirk and Michael Mando still holding the bar up high. However, Michael McKean as Chuck McGill really did contribute to a majority of the laughs in this episode, and with Jimmy McGill's character becoming more bogged down in the drama of each episode, it feels like he will be a central focus of the comic relief for the series.

FINAL VERDICT This was an entertaining episode, which packed more comedy variety than dark drama. I did enjoy it, but because there wasn't any dramatic or tension building scenes which kept me on edge, it felt quite slow. The balance of drama and comedy was executed a lot more efficiently in the last three episodes, and felt more engaged last episode round. There was some important plot points which is helping move the series along, like the hero publicity stunt by McGill and Nacho's threatening presence. But I find myself looking back thinking there isn't much to sink my teeth into.

With the series reaching a near half way point, I can only assume this is only a platform, but the amount of time left in this first series is wearing thin. Hopefully in the next episode, something big happens, it still feels like it needs a grand old push to get the wheels turning. I thought it was Episode Three (Nacho), but this week kind of deflated the drama slightly. Very enjoyable, but lacked the dark comedy balance and emotional impact.

Review of Season 1: Episodes 3-4
85122219 April 2015
Greetings from Lithuania.

Episodes 2 and 3 were very nice, although nothing really special. The plot moved a bit further, yet not much. There were some interesting plot points, and some funny moments, but again - nothing that special or memorable.

Overall score for both episodes 8/10. If you liked first episodes, you will probably enjoy these as well although they aren't so good. The story builds, and it's done nicely and a bit intriguing.

So far seeing our main hero in this show so far, i think this show will have the same moral - good person gone bad, as it was with "Braking Bad". It's interesting to see how this will happened, and these two episodes are a good flow of events.

Better Call Breaking Bad
bstover196024 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There are sure to be many cross references between these shows. I just noticed that in the Hero episode, Jimmy talks to a guy who wants to secede from the USA and create Sandialand or some such thing. I took it to mean his name is Sandia. In BB s3 e13 when Walt and Skyler look at the house they will buy in ABQ, it is mentioned that Walt works for Sandia Laboratories. Time sequence is not perfectly clear, other than this is 15 years before the start of BB as Skyler is pregnant with the son who is 15 at the start of BB. BCS starts an unnamed amount of time before BB (other than the opening scene of s1 e1 which is years later telling us that Saul's best case scenario worked out). So they could be the same time frame or near enough. The only question is it the same Sandia?

The Genius of Jimmy
CineNerd7027 July 2022
This season (and maybe the second) always felt different to me than the others. This felt smaller and more like a tiny bit of relating to the feel of it. Now I know why: This is all about tiny doses of Goodman poison into the immune system of James M. McGill, which is currently much more healthier. This episode shows this perfectly to me.

Another strong one

Another very strong episode, derived from the Hollywood classic THE STING in part. Very entertaining with funny scams and twists and Bob Odenkirk acting his socks off, making his character likeable yet devious at the same time.

Stick It To HHM
AudioFileZ24 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Better Call Saul started entertaining enough and seems, fourth episode in, the perfect blend of crime, drama, comedy, and that mysterious "you don't actually know Saul yet" even as we, pretty well are getting a handle on Jimmy McGill in the present. Admittedly, there is still much to see as to how this present came to be, you have to have some of that um good mystery swirling.

The present was great this week. We saw a cheesy manipulator from a past life morph into more sophisticated one with greater ambition and focus. McGill works the Kettleman's bankroll for some serious cash and puts it to work in some predictable and, much more interesting creative ways. Will it bite him in the backside? Probably, as we can't say for sure since this is McGill and nothing is 100% thought out and foolproof, but it's a flash of "low living" brilliance. Hey, after all, he's a bottom feeding attorney: wha'd 'you expect? Exactly, this is why McGill, aka Saul, is so crazy good to just watch ply his trade: verbally grandiose (no waste of good lies here) and jumping through hoops.

So, four in and we're good, no great. We get the rise of McGill who we know will evolve into an even more colorful Saul Goodman, and the evolution is a great ride.

Whip em out for space blanket
TheCorniestLemur18 June 2022
Again, not a particularly nerve-shredding episode, but I love how it's showing Jimmy sinking back into his old methods of conning people, and building up to the potential consequences of that.

And the opening scene that shows what his usual game was back then is a brilliant addition to this episode considering that, plus you not knowing whether or not Nacho is still angry at Jimmy or not because of his schemes is some damn good suspense for the future of the show.

The plan Jimmy comes up with is pretty genius and fun to watch play out too, so all I really wanted to complain about is the same issues as the last episode: maybe a little too slow and not directed as well as Episode 2, but also the fact that something about the Kettleman's acting in the first scene after the intro felt a little...off somehow.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but both of them seemed a little too deadpan. But all in all, it's another great episode and I like where it's going.

8.25/10, Great
dcdude-2698830 August 2023
This kind of did go down in quality from the last episode, but this was still good either way. My favorite things about this episode were the Cinematography, the Protagonist, and the storyline. I know this may be a little early, but this show is kind of already in my top 3 shows of all time. The reason for this is because I literally wanted to tell everyone at my school that I am Saul Goodman, which is the reason I started watching this show. I heard people say that the top five shows are Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, Better Call Saul, The Wire, and The Sopranos. I haven't seen The Wire yet, but I have seen Mr. Robot and Breaking Bad fully, and they are my top 2. The other two are top 4 for me, so I might watch The Wire after finishing all of The Sopranos, or maybe this show.

"Everyone Loves a hero."
brightestar-3464518 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
S'all good, man!

So, we got our First mention of Saul goodman from this show, but not how as we expected.

Nevertheless We begin this episode with Slippin Jimmy and his friend Marco demonstrating a fascinating scam. Again, this scene also makes clear that the light bluish color represents past in this Show.

This Episode Was A Nice continuation from previous episode and Starts with How kettlemans Tried to deal with jimmy. Jimmy's approach Indicates how desperate he is to just gain a client. Also The Line from betsy "You're the kind of Lawyer guilty people hire" and Jimmy's reaction was priceless. It felt like a sudden realiztion and he felt Humiliated.

Jimmy trying to replicate Howard's Clothing and Making almost an exact same billboard as HHM Was Funny. But the highlighting moment of this Episode was when Jimmy pulled a Con out of that billboard To Advertise Himself in an Unique way. The Whole Scene was great. It also introduced us the Students and they were actually a great addition to the show. When That Construct worker fell and Jimmy Went to help him, At that moment It's really hard to know whether his Reaction was genuine or not. But After that the Reveal moment Was Awesome and It Shows How Far can Jimmy go to Pull a Perfect Con!

The Ending Scene was also important which Establish How Well Chuck Knows Jimmy and that's Why Jimmy didn't want to show that paper with the news. Also Chuck Suspecting Jimmy Proves that very well.

And All of the Jimmy and Kim scenes from this episode establishes how well they Know each other and their Bond is Quite awesome. And Seems Like Jimmy really Cares for kim.

This episode was full of awesome moment. Almost all of the Scene was amazing and I Personally Like this Episode very much. The Character interaction is really good and Overall a Charming episode.
