S1.19: Sonnet #10: Good aid to understanding and following the text
bob the moo2 August 2014
I'm not entirely sure that Shakespeare wrote it in the way that it comes across in the short film, but sonnet 10 appears to be the writer appealing to another to return their interest – with the comments on them ruining their own house if they stay alone (I guess bringing the line to an end by failure to reproduce?). In this film the writer is a woman who appears to have been hurt by a guy who, frankly, looks like a bit of a disinterested douche – happier playing the field for the sake of his own ego rather than settling down and returning affection with someone else.

This is played out silently under the woman narrating with the sonnet, leaving her to do a lot of staring off sadly and feeling hurt but yet thoughtful. In fairness Ruttle does this pretty well considering there is not too much else to work with. In her narration she is a bit too overwrought with some of the lines but generally it worked and I appreciated that her delivery adding to my understanding of the words. As director Gebryel plays around with the location nicely, getting both the meaning of the sonnet and the look at the location balanced out; as actor he comes over as the selfish subject well – all in black, mirrored sunglasses etc, or at least I hope this was the intention and this is not his regular look!

Okay it is not a film of huge innovation and flair, but it is clear what is going on and it works the sonnet well, making it not one of the more memorable films thus far, but a sold entry in the series doing what it aims to do in bringing the sonnets across clearly.
