Valerie June, an expert at covers, takes on latter-day Duran Duran with her very own rendition of “Ordinary World.”
While many artists covering songs tend to stay true to the original, June’s version is more stripped-down, her stark vocals contorting around the rhythm to emphasize the meaning of the Nineties anthem: Persisting through darkness.
Given the current state of the world, June’s timing of the cover is no coincidence. “With modern times often full of heaviness and darkness, how do we find the strength to survive and grow?...

Ozzy Osbourne has called out his longtime Black Sabbath bandmate Geezer Butler for not checking in on him while he was dealing with a series of health issues in recent years. However, the bassist has responded by saying he made multiple attempts to send Osbourne “get well” messages.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone UK, Osbourne expressed frustration at Butler for the apparent radio silence. Ozzy also stated that their friendship has deteriorated in part because of a feud between his wife/manager Sharon Osbourne and Geezer’s wife/manager Gloria Butler.
“[Black Sabbath guitarist] Tony Iommi has been so supportive of me since my illness,” said Osbourne, adding: “Geezer Butler hasn’t given me one fucking phone call. Not one fucking call. When his son was fucking born, I phoned him every fucking night even though we were at war with each other, Black Sabbath and me [following Ozzy’s exit in 1979]. I thought, ‘Fuck it,...

Duran Duran launched their 2023 “Future Past North American Tour” at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Festival on Saturday, May 27th.
To kick off their headlining set, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group quickly dispatched several of their biggest hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Notorious,” and “A View to a Kill.” In a career-spanning sequence befitting the ethos behind their 2021 LP, Future Past, the band reached as far back as their 1981 debut single “Planet Earth,” while touching on key eras with tracks like 1984’s “The Reflex,” 1993’s “Ordinary World,” and their latest LP’s “Anniversary.”
The night also included the first live rendition of the Future Past duet “Give It All Up” with Tove Lo, who performed with the band and separately earlier in the day. Following 1981’s “Girls on Film” as the main set’s closer, the band returned with a double Rio encore of “Save a Prayer” and the iconic title track.

On Feb. 24, famous American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert released a new album called High Drama. The album features 11 covers of popular songs by Lambert with different vocal and production arrangements. In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, Lambert revealed he made a Lana Del Rey song sound like a “Led Zeppelin type song.”

Before the release of High Drama, Lambert was interviewed by Wonderland Magazine about the album. In the interview, Lambert shared that he really wanted to cover Del Rey’s song “West Coast.”
“With ‘West Coast’, it is my favourite Lana song, for sure. I find it very sexy. Being that I am from the West Coast myself, I thought it was appropriate,” he said.
Lambert also teased that he made the popular Del Rey song sound quite different than Del Rey’s version.

After placing as a runner-up on American Idol in 2009, Adam Lambert has become one of the most popular contestants in American Idol history. The singer has released studio albums of his own and frequently performed as the lead vocalist in Queen. On Feb. 24, Lambert will release a studio album called High Drama. Here’s what to know about the album.
Adam Lambert | Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Adam Lambert’s album ‘High Drama’ will be filled with covers
High Drama will be Lambert’s fifth studio album. What sets High Drama apart from Lambert’s past work is that Lambert will cover other artists’ songs on the album instead of releasing new songs of his own. However, Lambert’s covers on High Drama will all be renditions unique to Lambert’s artistry.
In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, Lambert explained why he chose to release an album of covers.

Every aspiring musician dreams of the day when they will get an opportunity like the one offered by The Voice. Now that that time has come for Aaron Konzelman, the singer has made sure not to take it for granted. His blind audition performance of “Ordinary World” resulted in John and Blake turning their chairs around. While either judge would have been a great option for Aaron, he decided to go with Blake – likely because the two have some musical similarities. Not only is Aaron excited to celebrate the moment, but he’s looking forward to the rest of the

After Night 1 of The Voice’s Season 20 Blind Auditions set the bar high for the contestants (read the full recap here), I half-expected the singers on Night 2 to wind up limboing under it. Were they lacking by comparison, or did they keep the momentum going? Read on, and we’ll discuss.

The real competition on “The Voice” isn’t among the contestants — it’s at the judging panel. Rival coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Nick Jonas are having more fun than ever in Season 20 thanks to their ever-growing ruthlessness and cutthroat attitudes. They each want to win, no matter the cost, and viewers can’t get enough of their antics. To recap, Blake has the most championship victories at seven, while Kelly has three, John has one and Nick has zero. What kinds of sabotage, barbs and jokes did the coaches throw at each other during Night 2?

Although they’ve never really been seriously considered by official voters, The Go-Go’s are your favorites for 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They received 20% of the vote in our recent poll asking which snubbed band most deserves to be chosen to be inducted. Melissa Etheridge was tops in our separate poll about overlooked female artists. Look out for our poll featuring male artists soon.
The all-female group from the 1980s originally was started by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Elissa Bello and Margot Olavarria. Other members who would most likely receive induction would be Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Paula Jean Brown. They beat out Duran Duran with 13% and The B-52’s with 11%.
At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Hof, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, along with his sons Joey and Jakob, performed a cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now” on Tuesday’s Late Late Show With James Corden.

Today is March 1st, which means we have a whole new set of titles to tell you about that just dropped on Netflix. The streaming service has 54 new movies/TV shows from nearly every major studio, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony, and while that number is still ten less than what we got last March, there’s far more original content on the service than there was a year ago. So, trust me when I say you’ve got plenty of options.
So many options, in fact, that I often find myself browsing for so long that I can’t decide on what to watch until it gets too late and I go to bed instead. First world problems, right?
In any case, below you’ll find the full list as well as a few descriptions of some personal favorites. Or some that I just felt like commenting on.

Named after the song “Last of the American Girls” off 21st Century Breakdown, the book is described as “an inspiring homage and handbook for the rebellious everywoman who refuses to capitulate,” according to a statement from their publisher. Ok, so this isn’t the most suspenseful season of The Voice ever. At this point, for Chloe Kohanski not to win, she wouldn’t just have to hit a bum note, she’d have to smack one of the show’s producers. (And even then, if she cried a glittery, apologetic tear, they might turn the other cheek.) The only real question mark hanging over Season 13 is which contestants will be singing with her in the finals. Some, obviously, won’t make it. (Good as he is, poor Adam Cunningham’s been on borrowed time for going on three weeks.

If you missed The Belko Experiment in the theater, well you can thank your lucky stars films get put on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Stephen Colbert introduced a new segment on The Late Show on Monday night titled "Lyrics We Can Afford to Songs We Love." In the first installment, Green Day sang "Camptown Races" – written by the 19th century American songwriter Stephen Foster, and thus freely available in the public domain – over their 1997 hit, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)."
Green Day performed the song acoustically in the dressing room, with Billie Joe Armstrong strumming a guitar and Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste accompanying him. Colbert and Armstrong traded lead vocals, while Mike Dirnt...

With his fourth film as director, Ben Affleck has finally produced a stinker. Live by Night fails because it commits the cardinal sin of cinema: it’s boring. Which isn’t a thing that should ever be true about a movie with speakeasies and flappers and tommy guns and gangsters in panama hats.
They live by night? Everything happens here in broad daylight.
Joe Coughlin (Affleck [The Accountant, Suicide Squad], also starring) is making a pretty good living in 1920s Boston as a bank robber, with no desire...

Billie Joe Armstrong delivered a moving performance of Green Day's "Ordinary World" on Conan Wednesday.
Armstrong took the stage solo, strumming an acoustic guitar and singing the folk-tinged ballad that closes the band's latest album, Revolution Radio. With the intimate set-up, Armstrong's aching voice carried the song from its simple but affecting lyrics – "The days into years roll by/ It's where that I live until I die" – to his sweet, wordless coos.

And it’s very conducive to nookie, of course. Except it isn’t, and there’s nothing charming or funny about a 40-year-old man — like Perry here — who has never grown up.

Ordinary World starts out with a flashback to a 1995 performance by L.E.S. Skunks, the fictional rock band once fronted by Perry Miller (Billie Joe Armstrong). So right from the very first frame, viewers are clued in to the fact that Armstrong — the longtime lead singer of Green Day — is riffing on his own persona and career. In fact, as the film contrasts its opening with Perry’s more laid-back current life, it’s almost like a glimpse into an alternate reality in which Armstrong’s own band had faded into obscurity soon after the 1994 release of breakthrough album Dookie instead of continuing to generate hits for another couple decades.
Despite the opening’s focus on Perry’s musical heyday, the bulk of the film follows Perry still adjusting to suburban life in New York City with his wife (Selma Blair) and two kids (the elder of whom is...

As iconic and as legendary as Green Day are, they are not invincible. Despite genre defining records such as Warning or Dookie – or even their magnum opus, American Idiot – they are still subject to scrutiny when it’s warranted. For the latter half of 2012 … well, it was warranted. The group took a risk, maybe too big of a risk, on the trilogy of records known as ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! that were released in the fall of 2012, and they weren’t even part of the same collection.
Each its own separate full-length and each its own selection in the band’s discography, the records maybe caught even more heat than if they were just released as a triple disc. To say the lackluster albums tarnished the band’s twenty year legacy may be harsh, but there was a point when most thought that ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! were simply a...

“Don’t Look Down,” the extraordinary true story of Richard Branson and his daring attempt to cross the Atlantic and Pacific in the world’s largest hot air balloon, is coming to theaters and VOD this November. A new trailer for the documentary was just released and shows the business magnate reliving the death-defying journeys he took in the mid ‘80s and early ‘90s.
“I saw my life flash before my eyes,” recalls Barnson in the clip. “It was just me standing on top of the capsule looking down at the water. I wrote a letter to the kids telling them how much I loved them, and then I prepared to jump.”
Directed by Daniel Gordon, the film captures the intensity and passion of the team that was involved in the project, as well as features interviews with key players and never-before-seen archival footage that was captured at that time.

Green Day was one of the bands that helped get me through my high school years. I'm a big fan of the band, and its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong stars in an upcoming film called Ordinary World. I had no idea this movie was a thing until I came across this trailer and it actually looks pretty good.
The film is a comedy, the story of which follows a character named Perry (Armstrong), who is a former punk rocker that is ten years into his band's "indefinite hiatus." He's "struggling with his adjustment to the real world, which includes working in his family's hardware store. When Perry's hotshot attorney wife (Selma Blair) and precocious young daughter forget his 40th birthday, his brother (Chris Messina) takes pity and gives him the money to throw a huge rockstar blowout in a fancy New York hotel. We all know Billie Joe Armstrong as the front man for the long-lived punk-pop band Green Day – now, we shall know him as a film actor. Armstrong makes his leading role debut in Ordinary World, with a new trailer hitting today introducing us to a very different Billie Joe.
For starters, he’s not a rock star any more; he just wants to be one again. Armstrong plays Perry, a former punk rocker having difficulty adjusting to life outside of punk. Unhappy at work and trying to manage a family with a distant wife (Selma Blair) and an adolescent daughter (Madisyn Shipman), Perry just wants one more day to cut loose and experience the excess of the punk lifestyle. So, on the advice and cold hard cash of his brother (Chris Messina), he does just that by getting a hotel room and tossing himself a blowout party for his 40th birthday.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Ordinary World shows us an alternate world where Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day isn't famous. He's just an ordinary guy working an ordinary job with an ordinary family. I'd hazard to guess that the lesson of this movie is there's no such thing as an "ordinary life." Billie Joe Armstrong plays a man who dreams of being Billie Joe Armstrong. He's turning 40 but no one in his family has remembered, so his friends throw him a hotel party. At first, I didn't immediately recognize the lead singer of Green Day. I didn't know who the actor was and wondered why they'd choose this guy for the role. He's a well-preserved 40 with great hair, so he didn't seem like an ideal choice to play a down and out dude in mid-life crisis.

I don't know how well Billie Joe Armstrong's... Read More...

Billie Joe Armstrong may be a Grammy Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the frontman of Green Day, one the biggest punk bands ever. But in “Ordinary World,” his first leading role, he’s nothing but a failed rock star missing his glory days.
Directed and written by Lee Kirk, Armstrong stars as Perry, a former punk rocker who is ten years into his band’s “indefinite hiatus” and is still struggling with adjusting to the real world. After his wife (Selma Blair) and his daughter (Madisyn Shipman) forget his 40th birthday, his brother (Chris Messina) takes pity and gives him money to throw the biggest birthday bash.
