Two Very Different Opinions

The Incredible Melting Man with William Sachs and Rick Baker (2013)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Interesting and extremely entertaining featurette with director William Sachs and make- up master Rick Baker as they discuss THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN. Well, to say this isn't one of the more entertaining featurettes out there would be an understatement because there's no doubt that both men shares completely different views of this film.

Sachs seems to think he created a goofy, silly homage to 50's monster movies while Baker appears to be downright hateful of the film. In fact, it's clear to see that Sachs thinks the film is some sort of great film while Baker sees it as an embarrassment. It's interesting that Shout Factory! put these two interviews together instead of separately because it's a really fun look at how two people can have a different view on the film.

Personally speaking, I think the film is a fun little movie so I think Baker is a tad bit too hard on it at times but there's no doubt he deserves his opinion and especially since it's such an entertaining one. He talks about coming off of KING KONG and being afraid to work on such a small movie so he made them an offer thinking it would be rejected but it wasn't. He talks about how the effects were done and it's clear that he wishes he had more time to make them. Sachs, on the other hands, spends a lot of time talking about how the producers wanted to ruin the film by making it something series and he talks about the comic nature of it was his intent the whole time. A lot of people watch this as a "so bad it's funny" movie so Sachs is trying to say he made it this way on purpose.

Who knows where the truth lies but Sachs and Baker are obviously on separate sides of things but it makes for a very entertaining documentary.
