Sex & Nudity

  • A man licks a girls face (and tears) before kissing her.
  • A man says his friend as a "lecher".
  • A geisha who is interested in an inexperienced guy tries to get him excited from time to time and teach him the ropes, but it is subtle and nothing too explicit is shown.
  • Some occasional mild references to women working as prostitutes and in the red light district.
  • One character is encouraged to do erotic rakugo ('sexy stuff'); however, it is remarkably tame by today's time period, with only mild sexual innuendo present in the stories we hear.
  • Men are seen in the bathhouse a few times; however, nothing is seen below the waist.

Violence & Gore

  • An accident, brought on by a suicide attempt, kills two people.
  • The first episode references violence numerous times. A man is referred to as a 'murderer', and we see blood splatter onto the screen as a special effect.
  • Some mild slapstick (pulling ears, slapping, etc.) is present in some episodes between friends and elders scolding children.

Profanity

  • Occasional use of mild coarse language ('damn', 'hell', 'crap', 'ass', 'piss', one use of 'bitch') is present in the official subtitles.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There is frequent use of tobacco from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes by adults. This is historically accurate to the time period of the show.
  • A number of scenes involve alcohol use; one man regularly becomes intoxicated.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • There is one brief scene of implied sex. A woman climbs on top of a man, deliberately exposing her cleavage to him (he remarks "I can see them"). The two of them talk a bit more, kiss, and the camera cuts away. It is revealed shortly afterwards she is pregnant.

Violence & Gore

  • A suicide is implied in episode 12. A woman asks a man to die with her. A man and the same woman are hanging off a platform with the intention of falling into the ocean; another man tries to save them, however is told to let go. We don't actually see them fall into the ocean; however, a funeral occurs in the next episode.
