There's Alway Someone Offended
Hitchcoc27 March 2023
For crying out loud. If you're so touchy about the accents of the Newfoundland people, watch a documentary. These are not thoroughly thought out feature film. Do you think they should spend a year analyzing an accent and then go into training to make sure the pronunciations are exact. In Bones, it's the plot and the principle characters in the episode. They work to make it somewhat realistic but it's of little importance to the general plot. The issues here, in addition to the discovery of the murderer are the relationships of the characters, especially Booth and Brennan coming to grips with loss. Then there's the appearance of that Sully guy. He's a decent catalyst. I agree with one reviewer that the funeral was really poorly portrayed. I assume a bunch of actors were unavailable for this final scene. Who were those people anyway?

Did they really have to kill Max??
brookielee-873993 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really think killing off Max in the previous episode was not a good decision but I understand part of the reason why they did it. Since Max abandoned Bones as a kid but when he came back he fought for her trust. And even after he finally got her trust and they developed close relationship, Bones was still worried for Max to watch Christine initially because he abandoned her as a child and was terrified he was going to do the same thing to her daughter. The act of Max giving up his life to protect Bones and Booths children, Christine and Hank, shows his love for Bones and his grandchildren.

I liked seeing Sully again - 10 years after his last appearance on the show! But I really would've loved to see Bones' brother, Russ, again - especially in this episode to support his sister and to grieve over their fathers' death together. When they announced season 12 was going to be "the final chapter" I was really hoping Russ would appear again for just a small scene at the least.

Over all "The Grief in the Girl" was an amazing episode, just like the other 244 episodes of the series!

Too short of a tribute to Max
wa-sl-675-3790639 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What struck me the most of all was the time they used to say goodbye to Max. He deserved much, much more. As Bones told us, it took great courage to get in touch with his daughter again after such a long time. He always looked after the kids and always gave good advice. I think it should have been nice if "Keep On Trying'" was used once again. It played a role in the relationship between father and daughter. It's also very sad Max had to die...

Terribly directed and cast funeral scene
astridforman2 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What's wrong with the director of this episode? Sully returns to offer support to Brennan because her father dies, but doesn't stay for the funeral???? Where are Daisy, Clark Wendall and Aristoo...why are they not at the funeral. Those 4 "squints" should have been there? The rest maybe not so much. Who are all those strange faces at the funeral ? A bunch of bystanders? Where is Caroline? Did she not see fit to support Brennan at her father's funeral? And where is Brennan's daughter ? Brennan would have thought she should be there (though Booth may have disagreed) These mistakes were GLARING

The Accents...
jennapeterson2 September 2017
I love Bones, and I was excited for an episode that would take place where I live, in Newfoundland. My excitement was quickly crushed by the accents (and dialogue in general) of all of the Newfoundlanders. The vast majority sound American, they all choose their words like Americans, and the few speaking with accents are clearly not Newfoundlanders nor are they familiar with the Newfoundland accent. The main RCMP officer sounds like she's trying for Scottish, but can't maintain it for a whole sentence. The shop owner (father, not daughter) is going for a mix of Irish vowel sounds and the sort of "Canadian accent" Hollywood jokes that are more true to Ontario than anywhere in the maritimes. I honestly found it so distracting, and a little insulting. We film our own "cop drama" show here in Newfoundland (Republic of Doyle), so it's not as if there were no local actors available and up for the role of an RCMP officer. I did appreciate Aubrey's enthusiasm for Newfoundland phrases, and found those funny. My husband complained about the officer's rebuke over the term "Newfie," as in this day and age you'll be hard pressed to find a bayman (and it'd be a bayman to have a thick accent) who's offended by the term.

This episode makes me crazy.
carolmk11 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The horrible accents and mispronounced words as well as the inaccuracies make this Canadian want to cry. I've seen the whole series at least 5 times and every time this one comes up I want to throw things at my TV. And suddenly there is no threat to the kids anymore? Everything turns back to "normal"?

Not a Newfoundland accent
nikkigreeley20 November 2021
Being a Newfoundlander, I was very upset for the cinematography of this episode. More so, the accents! How horrible! One cop lady sounds Irish and the others all sound American. The areas they have scenes look nothing like Newfoundland. Almost looks more like PEI or Maine! I was so excited to see any show spotlight my beautiful province. I hope everyone who watches this show search up Newfie accents. Because you'll see whoever directed this and cast the actors/actresses really need to do more research. Disappointing.

Not sure about the accents
krahnic-445769 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The main RCMP office try to sound like a Newfie but comes across as half Irish leprechaun, half Scottish lord, half Canadian lol. She is from Edmonton (me too) but it's not a good Newfie accent that's for sure.

Bad accents, costuming and location footage
ucc18124 April 2023
Even being raised in Quebec and Ontario, I can agree that the accents were insulting. The officer's uniform, even if it wasn't RCMP, was sloppy and ill-fitting. And finally, you think they could have thrown in some scene footage that looked a little like Newfoundland?

I work in the film industry and I can only believe that this episode was rushed and poorly researched on a number of fronts.

After all, if you're going to set an episode in such a distinctive location, please do some homework to get the basics right.

So yes, these little things distracted from the story and drove me to add this review.

Warning: Spoilers
Brennan erroneously blames booth for her rogue father's death and hooks up with an ex boyfriend ...good job you worthless hag ... i read one review boasting about the republic of doyle in new foundland ... sorry but that series was even worse than bones ... the irish mob in canada is like saying apple pie isn't made with tart apples ... in any event, the days of bones are numbered
