Quotes

  • [first lines]

Mr. Branson : Let's go through this again. It started in Sleepy Hollow.

Ichabod Crane : No. I was mortally wounded in battle in 1781 and put under a mystical slumber until I awoke three years ago in... Sleepy Hollow.

Mr. Branson : Where you met Abbie Mills.

Ichabod Crane : Yes. She became my partner. We joined together to fight evil.

Mr. Branson : To fight evil?

Ichabod Crane : Yes. Demons, Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the ongoing success of shows about real housewives. You know, evil.

  • Ichabod Crane : Why should I continue with these questions? You've not told me what I'm doing here. It's been two weeks and you have not proffered a whit of clarity regarding my situation. Where is Director Walters?

    [Branson doesn't reply]

Ichabod Crane : Ah, very well. You leave. But you should alert your cordwainer he's not up to snuff.

    [Branson looks at him blankly]

Ichabod Crane : Your brogues are loosening.

    [another blank stare]

Ichabod Crane : Your shoes are untied.

[as Branson looks down at his feet, Crane knocks him out]

Ichabod Crane : Oldest trick in the book. And that's coming from me.

  • Diana Thomas : [holding her gun on Crane after he saves her from a demon]  Who the hell are you?

Ichabod Crane : My name is Ichabod Crane. And I assure you, that is unnecessary. I'm a historical advisor. I've worked for the Sleepy Hollow Sheriff's Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As you saw by my action, I am an ally to law enforcement.

Diana Thomas : What are you doing here? And who was that?

Ichabod Crane : I appreciate you have many questions, but I must act quickly to track this demon. The longer I tarry, the...

Diana Thomas : What did you just say?

Ichabod Crane : The longer I tarry, the more...

Diana Thomas : Did you just say "demon"?

Ichabod Crane : If you do not want the killer to escape, you must allow me to pursue it. Otherwise, more souls will end up like you compatriot.

  • Diana Thomas : You owe me answers.

Ichabod Crane : That's rather a demanding attitude from someone whose life I saved.

Diana Thomas : Then ran like someone with something to hide.

Ichabod Crane : Well, the demon's trail grew cold. So I returned to observe this facility. Last I was here, men held me against my will. They must have abandoned the premises once I escaped. I can agree neither neither of us is a threat.

[putting down the tire iron he's holding]

Ichabod Crane : How did you get here?

Diana Thomas : These stopway tunnels were abandoned five years ago; environmental problems. They're covered in a specific kind of gravel; pumice and crushed oyster shells. You left some behind when you fled the Lincoln Memorial.

Ichabod Crane : Your investigative skills are prodigious.

Diana Thomas : They make you take a class or twenty when you join Homeland.

Ichabod Crane : In that case, you can assist in tracking the demon.

Diana Thomas : Stop saying that.

Ichabod Crane : Say what, "demon"? Well, that's precisely what it was.

    Diana Thomas : That's impossible.

Ichabod Crane : A demon, hellion, foul specter.

Diana Thomas : You're crazy. Okay?

Ichabod Crane : I'd guess a possessive spirit; a dybbuk, perhaps.

    Diana Thomas : Stop!

  • Diana Thomas : Demons don't exist.

Ichabod Crane : The human capacity for self-denial never ceases to amaze. You saw it with your own eyes. Your partner is dead because of it. Can you deny that?

    Diana Thomas : No.

    Ichabod Crane : Ah.

Diana Thomas : And his name was Eric.

Ichabod Crane : I am so sorry. Truly, actually. I, too, lost someone. My partner. And it is in their memory that I seek a person, one who is to inherit her vital legacy. I believe these blaggards also seek this person. Mm, that cannot happen.

Diana Thomas : And the people that you're looking for, you think they're responsible for the... thing that killed Eric?

Ichabod Crane : I'd hazard the demon we encountered was released when the Lincoln statue's hex was broken, which means someone did this; someone with a plan. Someone who will continue to perpetrate evil until they are stopped. Now, I know this is overwhelming. But consider this: I am the only one who can find the people who killed your partner.

  • Jenny Mills : [outgoing voicemail message]  I may not get this, and I may not call you back. If that's not a deal breaker, leave me a message.

Ichabod Crane : Miss Jenny, 'til most heartening to hear your voice, even if merely an auditory reproduction. I trust your journeys to parts unknown have borne fruit. Perhaps you have found more answers than I as to the whereabouts of the next Witness. I, too, have left the confines of Sleepy Hollow, and... yet again, my eyes are opened to a plain fact. I'm out of my element. But I remain hopeful. I have found new allies. And though it is early, I have a good feeling.

[as Diana enters the car, it's revealed he's handcuffed to the steering wheel]

Ichabod Crane : Although they may need to work on their trust issues.

  • Diana Thomas : The condition of the victim's body was the same as Eric's, and he had a puncture wound at the base of his skull.

Ichabod Crane : Mm-hmm. And this?

    [indicating his handcuffed wrist]

Ichabod Crane : Is the basis of our partnership to be suspicion and doubt?

Diana Thomas : This is not a partnership. This is a temporary alliance. And you have a history of running.

Ichabod Crane : One instant, not a history.

Diana Thomas : [uncuffing him]  Hmm. Out of two meetings, it is. That's a 50% fleeing ratio.

    Ichabod Crane : Fleeing ratio?

    Diana Thomas : Mm-hmm.

Ichabod Crane : I'm concerned about your fleeing grammar.

  • Ichabod Crane : Those who ignore history are doomed to... die by its bloody, hideous claws.

Jake Wells : I don't think that's how the saying goes.

  • Ichabod Crane : The killer we seek 'tis a creature summoned in 1865 by a Confederate occultist named Booth. He raised the beast to kill our country's leader during a period of deep national turmoil.

Diana Thomas : I'm sorry. 1865? Booth? You don't mean John Wilkes Booth?

Ichabod Crane : The very same. Which means...

Diana Thomas : Don't say it.

Ichabod Crane : President Abraham Lincoln was killed by a demon.

Diana Thomas : You said it.

  • Jake Wells : You're saying someone decapitated the Lincoln Memorial to release this demon?

Alex Norwood : That statue is made of white Georgian marble. You need Primacord to blast the head off, but there were no signs of explosives.

Ichabod Crane : The head must have been removed by supernatural means. A focused hex on the weakest point. The neck.

Diana Thomas : Sure know a lot about decapitation.

Ichabod Crane : I've had some experience in the matter.

  • Diana Thomas : I cannot believe this is what I'm doing. Crawling through tunnels with Mr. "Downton Abbey". No offense.

Ichabod Crane : None taken. I rather like "Downton Abbey". Believe it or not, I know how you feel. Being thrust into a world you never knew existed can be... unnerving.

Diana Thomas : I was recently reminded I don't do well with change.

Ichabod Crane : Well, I find it helps to know you're not going through it alone.

    Diana Thomas : Your partner?

Ichabod Crane : Yes. She helped me find my feet, even as she was finding hers. She was the best.

  • Ichabod Crane : You were in the military?

Diana Thomas : Marines. Two tours. Afterward, Eric wrote my recommendations when I applied for Homeland.

Ichabod Crane : Sounds like a good man.

    Diana Thomas : The best.

Ichabod Crane : Why did you leave the military?

Diana Thomas : I had a baby. Molly. She's ten now.

Ichabod Crane : Hmm. A fine age.

Diana Thomas : Yeah. Smart as a whip. Troublemaker, too. Though these days, the trouble's not really her fault.

Ichabod Crane : Is she in danger?

Diana Thomas : No, nothing like that. She just, uh... she stopped talking. She fainted a few weeks ago at school. She was fine afterward. Doctor said there's nothing wrong with her. Transient aphasia, they say. It'll pass, they say. So I will see your new world and raise you a child you cannot help. 'Cause there's nothing scarier than that.

  • Colonial Fan : What you got there? Frock coat with standing collar, leather shank buttons, Revere boots? A little out of style, don't you think?

Ichabod Crane : I beg your pardon?

Colonial Fan : That look is so 2000s. We rocked it for a while, but everything's about "Hamilton" these days.

Ichabod Crane : [annoyed]  Hamilton... there were other people involved in the American Revolution, you know!

    [seeing Diana's expression]

Ichabod Crane : Uh... not a fan of musicals.

  • Diana Thomas : What happened?

Ichabod Crane : Ah. Um... allow me to introduce miss Jenny Mills. Soldier, scholar, gentlewoman, and... all-around badass?

Jenny Mills : Actually, I prefer "Miss Badass".

  • Jenny Mills : If a new Witness is out there, you two will find each other sooner or later. In fact, there's a chance that you already have and don't know it. Have you run into anyone that's shown potential?

Ichabod Crane : Possibly. Far too soon to tell. Everything here is just so... new.

Jenny Mills : Crane, you need to know something. You're not alone. You never will be. Take a look at where we are.

    [gesturing to the Capitol building]

Jenny Mills : That building is here because of you. This whole country is here because of you. You belong more than anyone I know.

Ichabod Crane : In the old world, it was common to personify countries with ancient goddesses. So you had Britannia, Caledonia, Germania. But in America, no such figures existed. So colonists invented the personification of liberty, and they named her Columbia. That is who this city is named after. Washington, District of Columbia.

Jenny Mills : Welcome home, Crane.

  • Diana Thomas : So, you're gonna stay here in D.C.?

Ichabod Crane : I still need to find the men who abducted me and brought me here. And on a personal note... I feel it is time for a fresh start.

Diana Thomas : You seem like a person who has trouble leaving the past behind them. Could be the historical consultant thing.

Ichabod Crane : Well, the past is important. Gives us context. I am my history.

[gesturing to a statue behind him]

Ichabod Crane : But this fellow back here, Thomas Jefferson, once said something that I think of often. He said "I like the dreams of the future better than the histories of the past."

Diana Thomas : Until you find these people who kidnapped you, more demons are coming, aren't they? I just... I get a sense that's part of the deal.

Ichabod Crane : It does not have to be your deal. You have a child. This is not your fight. Like you said, ours is a temporary partnership.

Diana Thomas : I have to find the people who are behind Eric's death. I owe him that.

Ichabod Crane : Agent Thomas... once you start down this path... there really is no turning back.

Diana Thomas : It helps if you don't have to do it alone. Besides... I overheard Alex and Jake. She's building a guillotine. She's gonna use him to test it. Better keep an eye on those two.

Ichabod Crane : Yes. I think that would be wise.
