While cleaning out the house of his grandfather, a young man discovers scientific material hinting at the feasibility of time travel. Together with his best friend, who is equally gifted at all things mechanical and technical, he succeeds into building a weird-looking but functional time travel machine. At first both men think up classic money-making schemes such as buying the right lottery ticket, but life forces them to consider much starker problems...
A science fiction movie of the time travel variety, "Reset" has all the hallmarks of an independent production with a petite budget. (For instance, don't expect much in the way of special or visual effects.) However, it transcends these limitations by telling an interesting story. The acting is appealing too.
As the movie progresses, it turns into a meditation on the psychological ability (or, in this case, inability) to deal with a devastating loss. People who like to Think Thoughts can ponder the solution found by the bereaved man. Has he chosen full-on illusion or has he somehow discovered a truth more essential than facts ? Is he a coward or is he a hero of "Orpheus" stature, descending into the underworld not once but daily ? Has he accidentally stumbled upon heaven, hell, purgatory or some other state yet to be named ?
"Reset" is a modest, small-scale movie but I've got to say I liked it better than many a million-dollar superproduction released with fanfare.
