The episode opens where part one left off, a fire ball breaking through the window of a shop where the Atherlys are with Julia. Everyone runs out except for Julia who heard a voice crying out to her. Running deeper into the building, Julia is confronted by the vision of Eva Price claiming Julia wishes to join her in death. Murdoch rushes in and saves her of course.
The fire was part of a historical event: The Great Fire of Toronto in 1904 and some footage from that period is used in this episode. No one knows immediately how the fire started, but Higgins is walking around with a cloud over him as he recalls his discarded cigars. Could he be the culprit? Is he responsible for the Great Fire? Murdoch still hasn't heard from Scotland Yard and the Atherlys and remaining debutantes are all still suspects. But George is coming around to Samuel Bloom, to the point where he is offering Bloom money after his shop was destroyed. Plus George likes the idea of someone operating a garage to repair automobiles; and George will be a partner in the business of Crabtree and Bloom, Auto Repairs.
Julia is still suffering from guilt and even Brackenreid believes Julia might benefit from seeing a psychiatrist. Plus Brackenreid needs Julia's help in finding the killer, perhaps a serial murderer.
Lady Atherly is in her glory as she has married her daughter off to Rodney Strong, and is counting the future money bags in her sleep and in waking hours as well. But Julia is a bit bothered as the Atherlys keep insisting Julia saved them when Julia knows she did nothing. And Murdoch sees them as opportunists who have moved from possible penury to wealth; and maybe escaped a scandal in England with shades of Lady Chatterley, since Elizabeth Atherly was having it off back home with a gardener.
Yet a third debutante is murdered, Erma Fairhurst, but why? Strong is married so that motive can be removed? Was it ever even a motive? One can only say poor, poor Strong. Be very careful whom you marry, especially if that person shares the qualities of a sociopath.
A good episode with some fun twists. It even concludes on a hopeful note for all the main characters: Murdoch and Julia will buy the land to build their house; Crabtree has his name on what could be a profitable business; and Higgins didn't start the fire, it is attributed to a faulty stove. Is it possible our team will enjoy some well-deserved happiness? I doubt it.
