After a month off, Supergirl returned with a pretty solid outing. This time, mostly focusing on Lena Luthor and her ex-boyfriend tech genius turned (possible) villain.

This was definitely a "villain of the week" type episode for Supergirl, though I think we would be stupid not to think that Lena's arc in this episode alone won't have a significant impact on where her character goes the rest of the season. I've been on the train of thinking that she would be better served as a friend to Kara that has a slight dark side, instead of going full-blown Luthor. But knowing CW, she will almost certainly be a big bad at some point or another.

Her boyfriend Jack, played by established CW actor Rahul Kohli, proved to be a more than worthy villain of the week and even had more depth than most of the villains this show claims as "bigger bads". But clearly, he was merely there so that Lena could be fleshed out a bit more. Meanwhile, Kara was busy investigating Jack about his developments with 'Biomax' and the questionable uses of nanobots. This whole thing felt like a rip-off of Big Hero 6, but at least it gave Kara a different type of foe to take down.

Winn, Lyra, and James were off doing their crime-fighting shenanigans in National City when all of a sudden Lyra is a capable fighter and good enough to fight in the field? Huh? I'm not sure where this came from or why this is even a storyline, but sure? The only thing I can think of is that the writers want to incorporate Lyra a bit more so that when she inevitably gets killed off at the end of the season, we care for her and Winn? This all felt rather silly and pointless.

A solid twist on the villain and more Lena material made this episode of Supergirl another valuable entry this season. However, consistency is the goal here, and the show needs to keep impressing or it may lose my interest once again.

+Lena gets a lot to do

+Villain was solid, albeit a Big Hero 6 rip-off

-Why is Lyra fighting in the field?

Warning: Spoilers
There's no denying that this season of Supergirl has fell extremely flat for me. While I enjoyed the previous episode prior to this 4 week break, I was overall pretty disinterested in what this show had given me from the mid season finale to now. With that my expectations for this episode was quite low like it has been the past few episodes.

This episode is a tough one for me to judge. If I look at it as just the episode, it was a fairly solid episode. The writing was pretty decent, the performances were solid, the story was easy to follow, the action looked good, the effects on the bugs turned out pretty nice. It is my definition of a good episode.

But then I have to judge this episode in the context of this season. If this was the 3rd, 4th, even 5th episode of the season, I think it would have been fine but it wasn't. This is episode 18. They have set up our villain, they are coming off a fairly good episode, this was the episode they needed to start pushing forward. Instead they caused an unnecessary drama point with Winn, they introduced a new character which we are never going to see again and they found a way to give Kara her job back. Unless this pays off in the coming weeks, this episode is going to be put with all the unnecessary episodes we have had this second half of the season.

Overall, I watched the episode, it was fine and that's it. I didn't really take many highlights away from it which is really disappointing at this point in the season. Hopefully they can step it up in the weeks to come however I don't know if they will because they have snuffled out my hope for countless weeks now.

Pretty good episode, but why no more Lyra?

Warning: Spoilers
This episode felt mostly like an aside to the main storyline this season, which involves Kara's relationship with Mon-el and Rhea's ruthless desire to get her son back at any cost and by any means, no matter how violent or underhanded.

But it's still a pretty good episode, I thought. I was surprised that Lena's former love interest ended up being an innocent pawn and found it poignant that Lena had no choice but to kill him to stop the nanoswarm.

The main purpose of this episode was obviously to return Kara to her job as a reporter by proving herself to Snapper, which she did, very well. Good writing on that, which didn't feel contrived or artificial to me, but rather natural.

To me, this season was much better than the first, which I did like. Just not as much. Mon-el was a very welcome addition to the cast. As a comics reader, I know the character well from Legion of Super-Heroes. Here, his back story is radically altered from the comics, giving him a redemption arc from his former thoughtless and spoiled self to a responsible and decent individual, eventually a real hero like Kara.

I was inspired to write this review after re-watching this episode; had stalled in watching this series years ago around season 3 as I turned my interest to other series. Not so much because I didn't like the series; just got distracted. I liked Winn's alien girlfriend Lyra but see that that this was her last episode; it's kind of a shame as I liked that character and actress.
