Rob Lurie is attached to direct the drama Hate (A Love Story), which centers on a real-life legal battle that surrounded the infamous Westboro Baptist Church.
In 2006, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder was killed while serving in Iraq. His funeral in Westminster, Maryland, was protested by Westboro Baptist Church members who carried signs that read “God Hates You.” Citing defamation, invasion of privacy and other complaints, Snyder's father, Al, sued the church and its founders, the Phelps family. The highly publicized case ended up at the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the church and the Phelps family on...

Slaves Of Hollywood - A 1993 film about Hollywood Assistants ripped from today's headlines, sort of.
by Terry Keefe
Back in the mid-90s, Michael Wechsler, Brian Grossman, and myself collaborated with a bunch of great young actors and crew for this micro-budgeted feature film about tortured Hollywood assistants. Alex Simon makes a few cameos also!
As we were going for "theater of the absurd," and (mostly) dark laughs, it isn't the perfect companion to today's headlines, but some of the milieu will be familiar. The stories about Harvey Weinstein abounded even then. In total honesty, I had great bosses in Hollywood, and the film is all based on stories we had heard about Other bosses. The ones you didn't want to work for. There but for the grace of God went we. But Meryl Streep did later call Harvey "God," so it all gets confusing.

The debut film-maker behind God’s Own Country talks about growing up on a farm – and why his sensational debut is not ‘the Yorkshire Brokeback Mountain’
Francis Lee shot his sensational debut God’s Own Country down the road from the farm where he grew up in West Yorkshire. A love story between two young male farm workers, it’s been described as “a Yorkshire Brokeback Mountain” and has been picking up awards left and right, including a best director prize at Sundance and the prestigious Michael Powell award at the Edinburgh film festival. Unexpectedly, it has been a Hollywood calling card and Lee’s phone has been ringing off the hook.
At least, it would be ringing off the hook if anyone could get through. Lee, 48, lives in a wooden hut on the side of a hill near Haworth in the Pennines – Brontë country. “The mobile phone reception is...

Nicolas Cage stars in a new revenge thriller called Vengeance: A Love Story, which is based on 2003 novel Rape: A Love Story, by author Joyce Carol Oates. Today we get a look at the new trailer and poster for the film.
Here is the synopsis:
On the Fourth of July, single mother Teena is brutally assaulted by a local gang in front of her 12-year-old daughter Bethie. Even though Bethie is able to identify the attackers, the defense hires a local hot-shot defense attorney who manipulates the law to their advantage. When the criminals are set free, Gulf War veteran and detective John Dromoor (Nicolas Cage) is dismayed by the lack of justice and plots revenge against the men on Teena’s behalf.
This movie, in many ways, feels very similar to the Bruce Willis starring Death Wish. A man seeking justice on his own terms after the justice system fails him.

Forget all those swirling songs and plots about love, heartache and family values. Bollywood has more pressing concerns
‘This is not about defecation,” says the hero of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which translates as Toilet: A Love Story. “It is about our whole way of thinking!” What makes this startling line all the more surprising is that it is delivered by Akshay Kumar, an actor straight out of the Bollywood A-list.
The film, as the second half of its title suggests, has no shortage of such Bollywood staples as romance and love songs. But the main subject matter is one that no Hindi film has ever tackled before: open defecation. This is a singularly Indian problem. Various studies estimate that 60% of India’s billion-plus population don’t have access to a bathroom. For women, this isn’t just a question of sanitation. It’s about safety, privacy and independence.

"Leave us alone!" FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for a new action film titled Vengeance: A Love Story, adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel titled Rape: A Love Story. The story is about a local police officer who goes for vengeance when a local gang rapes a woman. The criminals find a way to walk away free thanks to a hot shot lawyer, and so the detective takes matters into his own hands. Nicolas Cage stars as John Dromoor, with a cast including Anna Hutchison, Talitha Bateman, Deborah Kara Unger, Don Johnson, Joshua Mikel, Rocco Nugent, Joe Ochterbeck, Carter Burch, and Charlene Tilton. This looks like a generic vengeance movie, especially with Nicolas Cage, but who knows. It's also interesting they removed the word "rape" from any description of this film, but it's definitely a major part of the plot. Here's the first trailer (+ new poster) for Johnny Martin...

Another random Nicolas Cage movie has arrived, though this time around it has some real literary flavor. “Vengeance: A Love Story” is based on the provocatively titled novel “Rape: A Love Story” by Joyce Carol Oates. But the cinematic translation winds up playing more or less like what you’d expect from latter day Cage.
Originally slated to direct, the actor passed the duties onto longtime second unit and stunt coordinator Johnny Martin for this story about a detective who takes matters into his own hands when the perpetrators of a vicious attack on a mother and her daughter are set free.

He has three decades and 124 movies under his belt, but one look at the last year of Akshay Kumar’s resume could very well confirm that — amid the steady annual stream of newcomers struggling to find their footing in Hindi cinema — it’s the 50-year-old veteran actor who’s emerging as Bollywood’s biggest revelation.
“This is definitely one of the most exciting periods of my career,” Kumar told IndieWire in a recent interview. It’s a fitting assessment, given that trailer views for his latest feature, Shree Narayan Singh’s “Toilet — Ek Prem Katha” (“Toilet — A Love Story”), crossed the 16-million mark in just four days. The film is inspired by the true story of a villager who, when his new wife (played by Bhumi Pednekar) left him after discovering he had no toilet in his home, made it his mission to build one, defying age-old traditions which have forced women,...

I read Nate And Kelly twice, and loved it!
It’s a great tale and a good read, so well done by very talented writer Michael R. Barnard, who is also a screenwriter, producer and director.
Barnard took detailed historical facts about America from a century ago and wove into those facts an intriguing story about love and hate, about cultural divides and politics, and about racism in our country in the middle of the Jim Crow era.
Writing as a contemporary observer, as if he were from that era watching what was happening and not knowing what was going to happen next, he brings the reader into the emotions of the day. And it was a very fulfilling journey for this reader.
Well what days those were! A love story for today is set in 1915, and it turns out that was an incredible year in our history.

For every cult classic like Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me or stone cold classic like Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, the folks at Janus and The Criterion Collection decide to use their platform to shine a light on some of film’s most interesting unsung gems. Be it from the early days of African cinema, the Romanian New Wave or even American indie cinema of the ‘80s and ‘90s, some of Janus and Criterion’s most interesting theatrical and home video releases are the ones that seemingly come out of nowhere.
Take, for example, Desert Hearts. From director Donna Deitch, Hearts tells the story of Vivian, a conservative, buttoned up English professor caught in the middle of late ‘50s Reno and a going-nowhere marriage. In the midst of a divorce Vivian meets Cay, a gorgeous and vibrant woman who helps not only open Vivian’s eyes to herself but to the world around her.

Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance are both Hollywood icons in their own right, but we're equally as obsessed with their romance. The two first met in 1980 and have been making us swoon ever since. They tied the knot in 1997 and welcomed their twins, son Slater and daughter Bronwyn, nine years later. Aside from writing a book together, Friends: A Love Story, they have both starred in hit Ryan Murphy shows - Angela was in the last four seasons of American Horror Story while Courtney gained critical acclaim for his performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson. Honestly, if the famous writer were to create a show about their relationship, it would probably be called American Love Story, because these two know how to keep the flame burning. Warning: The following recap contains major spoilers for the Season 2 finale of Blindspot.
It is a very, very good thing that Blindspot fans were made aware of the show’s fate long before Wednesday’s season finale — and even better, of course, that the NBC drama scored a third season.
Because, had the series ended like that — after a two-year time jump, with Jane living among mountain monks and totally removed from her life with the FBI — I’m not sure viewers could have coped with such a massively intriguing (but also sorta strange) cliffhanger.

La La Land and I, Daniel Blake take home big prizes at the BAFTAs. Here's the full list of winners...
No harm was done on La La Land's path to the Oscars at today's BAFTA Film Awards 2017, with the British Academy for Film and Television Arts rewarding the acclaimed musical with its top gong. Elsewhere, significant salutes were in abundance for I, Daniel Blake, and - aside from some British loyalty - there's little to suggest that the prizes given out won't be reflected at this year's Academy Awards.
Here's the full list of winners...

Just yesterday an edited version of Beauty and the Beast that replaced the beast with Voldemort lit up the internet. Today? A new love story has cropped up from the guys at Cinefix. Oopsie. In the Holiday rush we forgot to share one of the most important lists, the list of which films can be nominated for Oscars (in regular categories -- speciality categories like "best foreign language film" having their own rules). Every year the list is a wee bit odd if you really take a deep dive at it because it's filled with movies you haven't heard of as well as missing a few movies you have. Why is that? Because the list is made up of films which met two requirements.
1) Each film played for a week long engagement in Los Angeles that you could buy tickets to like you would any movie (i.e. not a festival engagement alone) and...
2) Films which did that and then Also submitted paperwork to the Academy to be eligible.
The most important film that is missing this year (apparently due to requirement #2) is acclaimed Aquarius starring Sonia Braga.

My mum, having just gone through an acrimonious divorce, was trying to drum up the optimism to find love again, and apparently that involved watching a lot of rom-coms where an idealised – or at least intrinsically whimsical...
