Well I guess I will be the first reviewer that wasn't that impressed by this movie. The beginning had me wondering what was going on, so at that point it had my full attention, but in the end it just didn't make much sense and so I had troubles to stay concentrated for the entire movie. It's kinda slow and that combined with the story is just not a good thing. The acting was okay though so nothing bad to write about them. To me the story had potential but they missed an opportunity to make it a much better movie. Tomorrow I will have forgotten everything about this movie that's how captivating it was to me.

Good plot...rushed delivery...If this movie had of taken more time to express what it was trying to achieve it would have been great...I'm saying a 6 because it was never boring...but it didn't explore things to it's full or even half way capacity...
Just Ok For Me

This film is about a girl who stumbles across a couple living deep in the Appalachian Mountains and even deeper in their secrets.
This film isn't awful. The story is interesting, it is filmed well, acted well but it is lacking a little something. I just never felt captivated or very invested in what was taking place. There's nothing impressive to it but I'm glad I watched it.

Another "ambitious" film a newcomer director

It's a pretty depressing thing that the best part of this movie is the scenery. Had potential but squandered it on bad writing, plotting and direction. Stinks of something inauthentic. My guess is that the director has little life experience to draw from. He has overstretched his reach. The material/subject is too esoteric for his superficial approach. Maybe a bit hubris. Overall an annoying, uninspired film. 2/10.

It was slow and I kept drifting off to sleep. Didn't know if I was just too tired to start a movie or if it was that slow. Either way, I finished the second half the next day and I'm glad I did. It really was different and I like that. I thought what kind of polygamy plot is this? Is it a cult? The ending made you think once the movie was over and that's a good sign. I'm glad the blonde killed the two goofs because they were not responsible enough for this magic. I felt she would carry it on until she found someone to share it with. I loved that Ella decided to be with Adam and end it the same way the people did before them. It was a nice change of pace. Give it a shot if you're not sleepy.
Intriguing But Too Muddled

The good news is that this fantasy tale has originality, decent acting, and some intrigue. The bad news, as I see it, is that it just leaves way too much unexplained for the viewer as it jumps from one plot element to another. It's only at the very end that we get some kind of a grasp on what the heck has been going on. Feature debut for writer and director Takashi Doscher

Surprise

Sometimes you have to look beyond the overall rating of a film. Initially I was going to pass on watching this movie with a rating of 5.2 After seeing reviews from those who actually enjoyed the movie I decided to watch it and I'm glad I did. The story held my interest and I got to like all of the main characters and ended up surprised. 👍
Not bad, just poorly executed
Howling_at_the_Moon_Reviews14 December 2021
The movie had a good and interesting premise, it just wasn't super well executed. It felt very rushed, especially at the beginning and while there were some good moments for each of the three leads, I feel like their finesse or lack there of did the movie some detrimental disservice's at times. Over all I honestly didn't hate it and there were aspects I enjoyed. It was shot beautifully. I feel like this had some real potential but there was just something off about it. Probably wouldn't recommend, but maybe haha.
A movie that stays with you for days.

This is one of those movies that you watch that starts out slow, but you find out later, it is intended to do this to pull you in. Once in you can't stop wondering what is coming next. In a methodical way it pulls you in.
The end is mind blowing and beautiful all rolled up into a feeling you can not shake for days.
A beautifully written movie that deserves an encore for a first time film maker.

It was more of a 1'st draft. If only. 😕

So, ever since Orange is the New Black, I've been enchanted by Madeline Brewer. She has a charm that kept me watching this flick, in direct spite of the movie, itself.
So, the story is a bit weak sauce. There needed to be more to the plot. It seemed more an homage to moonshine than anything. Add to that, the director started off the film with news clippings that gave everything away. After that, the director decided to tack on an extended backstory, at the end. I think it was supposed to be a "big reveal" mixed with tying-up loose ends, but it was the cinematic equivalent of serving the main course, after dessert.
The acting was great and it would appear the Appalachian Trail is beautiful??? If only we could have seen more of it. The dialogue could have been expanded to show why the male lead felt the way he did about trespassers. Also, the ending of one of the female characters seemed out-of-character.
I hope this movie is remade, someday, with more time spent fleshing-out more than just 1 of the 3 leads and in a way that is more M. Night Shamaylan and less 4-yr-old telling you about an event he witnessed in school, the other day.

None of it makes any sense. What happens inside the tree? Is moonshine the elixir of life? Do they time travel? All questions with no answers. Plain and simple, don't watch this movie. There, I just saved you ninety minutes of your life. You're welcome.

This is a meat and potatoes story about... um, some people in the woods? A sick and dying girl stumbles on a couple in the woods that are hiding a secret and will kill to keep it. Within a few minutes of meeting the blond girl it was pretty easy to figure out the secret and from there the movie just kind of stops. There is no climax, no resolution. Save your 90 minutes and do something better with it.

Better than I thought but left with some questions
vanessa0887 March 2023
It starts out interesting but gets a little slower throughout the movie. I didn't think I'd like it for that reason, but it had enough to keep me interested. The film definitely doesn't have the in-your-face points that many movies like this have but the subtlety wasn't too frustrating. I really liked the characters and the scenes are beautiful. If you're looking for a different type of mystery and don't mind watching a slower movie, I think this is a good choice. The actors were all great, especially the actors playing Ella and Adam. I wish I knew the answers to a few questions I had at the end of the movie, but either way, it was an interesting movie.
Sad
wjandrew3 April 2020
Best thing about this movie is the scenery. Sad that it wasn't really filmed in north GA Appalachia. Sad that it used actors from Jersey and England with horribly attempted southern accents. Sad the plot started slow, got to fair, then backwards to full suck mode. Ex. How did a 1920s person put a modern tent together when most people need written instructions to do it now? Sad I felt the need to enter the review while the movie was playing. Sad everyone wasted their time on this garbage. Sad no one had input on how to fix
this hot mess. Sad the writer didn't work harder on the script. And sad I noticed more than likely the people who highly rated this crap are probably artsy fartsy types who are snowflakes.
This hidden gem turned out to be quite a tale

8/10 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
When this film began there was something about it that gave me the feeling that it just might be worth the watch. Maybe it was the beautiful natural aperture shots of lydia Wilson at the beginning in the forest or how psychotic Mark Blood storms onto screen. But "Still" which also features Madeline Brewer is a great tale that develops beautifully catching you off guard with multiple plot twists the minute you think you have it all figured out. The story is about a married couple who lives in a rustic cabin off the beaten path. When visitors who are lost show up the wife is more than happy to show warm hospitality, As for the husband not so much fearing the secret they possess will be uncovered by the new arrivals. The acting and cinematography is superb the pace of the film runs smoothly revealing different aspects of the characters at the right time with backstories that compliment the mystery. The storyline is very believable even though it's a fictional tale. Although other films have been created that involve this subject matter "Still" does it in a unique way so it feels fresh not stale. A very heartwarming message at the end you definitely come away understanding why earlier events took place. All in all definitely worth a watch the 5.6 rating does not do this film justice I give it an 8 you'll enjoy this movie if you check it out trust me.

Just mind numbingly slow
bs-3343510 November 2019
The acting is fine, the scenery is pretty, but there's a huge pacing problem in this film. Sometimes stuff just "happens", out of the blue, barely explained. Other times just "nothing" happens at all. I understand the concept of "slow burn" movies, but this one was just slow.
And the "big reveal" / secret promised in this film? Please. If you've ever watched a film like this you'll have seen it coming 10 miles away.
