Every country has a monster...

Every country has a monster...

...and Denmark has a turkey - in the guise of the monster movie, Reptilicus.

This episode is the first of the crowd-funded 2017 reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000... and it's a gem. There are great riffs aplenty - it's almost as if the Joel Hodgson crew never left... except this time the movies are in the widescreen format and Tom Servo can fly around the screen to reach the bits that he couldn't in the past.

I stopped watching the original series when Michael J. Nelson took over. It just wasn't the same... the good-natured messing about and the heart and soul that was a hallmark of the Joel years seemed forced and insincere. But it's back now and if you were a fan of Joel of the past, you're sure to take to Jonah of the now!

The 1961 Danish movie, Reptilicus, is so bad that it almost doesn't need riffing on. It rates as one of those phenomenal movies that is so awful it's actually good. When the MST3K team takes on a movie you expect the effects, writing, and continuity, etc, to be bad. But this movie is a stand out because of the acting. It is HORRIBLE! All the acting is a disgrace and scores 10 gold stars for entertainment value because of that.

But... a special mention must go to Dirch Passer as the comic relief security guy, Peterson. If you're from Denmark you can hang your heads in shame for a few seconds! This alleged comic actor (who actually had a busy career in Denmark) gives the worst performance of his life and it's a hoot!

After a slow-ish first few minutes of unnecessary exposition, hold on to your hats! The gags start to come thick and fast so you'll be watching this a few times to get them all... and there are also well-measured silences where we can simply enjoy the terrible-ness of the film.

Best 'laugh out loud' gag for me: "Cut! Come ON, Ralph!"

MST3K (Hodgson style) is back and it's as awesome as ever. Well worth the wait.

A good, but uneven reboot
mane-5796329 May 2017
I was initially skeptical at how the reboot of MST3K would be handled, but to my surprise, its a good reboot. While not perfect or nearly as good as the original 1988- 1999 run, but its a good way to introduce new generations of the show. The movie Reptilicus is a good choice for riffing too. The host segments are a little weak (except for the rap one that was a pretty good one).

It may take a little for older fans like me to get rid of this new reboot, but I'm impressed that the show is back.

A good but rocky start

Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of the MST3K revival is a success, but not as much as people make it out to be. Lets start with what this reboot gets right: the riffs are funny, I like Jonah, and the new voices for the bots (except for Gypsy's, I like the falsetto voice of the original better). The movie choices are good and are classics too. I like the set designs too and the idea of a new premise of MST3K and not just rehashing the same sets. But lets get to the movie.

Reptilicus is another monster movie much like Gorgo, or the Gamera series that mst3k had riffed in the past, except it was made in Finland. The movie dons a classic b-movie style: bad acting, annoying or asshole characters, cheap effects poor monster design, and set design. Its a great movie for MST3K to make fun of. And it turns out that like I said before, the riffing is good, not excellent.

Now lets get to the problems with the reboot: some of the riffs seem too fast and don't give you much room to breath. The new mad scientists are not very good. Except for TV's son of TV's Frank, who is fun. Kinga Forrester is not very funny and quite forgettable in comparison with Dr. Forrester and Pearl. Kinga's not terrible, but isn't a very intimidating or funny character. Gypsy's new voice just doesn't fit her well, like I said before, the original falsetto voice was much better.

Overall, this was a good reboot, but rocky. It does keep the spirit of the show well, but does need some improvement, which the next episodes do well.

Reptilicus (2017)

Yes. The original does, on average, deserve a one star better rating.

Joel Hodgson's personality worked better. After all, he was the creator and head -liner. And, in the opinion of both my wife and myself, the original series had picked all the best movies to lampoon. Still: this reboot offers nearly the same quality dumb, campy fun.

Reptilicus certainly has the signature campiness going for it. Dumb dialog, poor "special effects", totally implausible plot.

At 0:29:25 -it is inadvertently revealed that this episode has been funded by a global agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting world peace (UNESCO).

Horrible and brutal to watch...
brooksrob116 April 2017
I am a big fan of MST3K...The newest show bears no resemblance to the former show...This is what happens when some nudge says; "Ah, I can be just as funny as Mike or Joel or the bots"...Guess what? You can't!

They play the movie too loud, they miss opportunities for commentary...And the "jokes"/ "quips" aren't...Atrocious is the best way to describe it...I don't remember ever cringing when the originals did their thing...Oh well, maybe it was just the first show; I will try some more as they come out...But, this looks like they rehearsed right before shooting...Zero stars.

meh

The production value is cringe; doesn't live up to the quality of '90s show, and considering the show is meant to be campy and cheap, not a good look. Some horrendous hand-held camera shots at the beginning of the episode set the disappointing tone: this is a cheap and crappy Netflix s*** show. The live segments also don't live up to the original show on any level. Very sad considering creator Joel Hodgson is still involved. The movie parts are "MEH"... not so bad, not so great. A few funny moments, but also a lot of silence in spaces where the real writers from the show would have been hammering lines in. 30 minutes in I just wanted to watch one of the real episodes

Awful!
fembot10004 September 2018
If you want to see how bad this reboot of MST3K is then look no further than this, their first new episode. It's terrible, the riffs and writing are terrible, the hosts are terrible... please don't make any more of these! Do another reboot. Fix all the mistakes if you can.
