Pretty good
As said in my previous reviews for all episodes of Season 12 seen to date, Season 12 so far has been much better than expected. No gems yet, but a couple of episodes ("Elliot's Pond" and "Mirror Image" faring best, but while not stinkers or low points "Taboo" and particularly "The Anti-Terror Squad" were disappointments.
"Scarecrow" was pretty good if not among the best or worst episodes to date. Not as good as "Elliot's Pond" and "Mirror Image" but on the same level of "The Crimson King" and "Keeper" and better than "Sick Day", "Taboo" and "The Anti-Terror Squad". It has its serious faults but many great merits.
Let's start with the negatives first of all. The debut of the character of newcomer to the team Stephen Walker wasn't much of one, he is very underused, the character himself is bland and Damon Gupton doesn't have much to do to do much with it. After "Mirror Image" did such a great job with Tara Lewis and Aisha Tyler gave her best acting of the show to date (which is saying a lot), she is back to the stiff and dull character she was in almost all her previous appearances.
Reid has some delightful material that allows him to be true to character, but again his screen time could have been much more. The story has some familiar elements with a few parts bringing not much new.
Visually, however, "Scarecrow" is very well shot and lit and is overall stylish, gritty, classy and atmospheric. The music is moody in the haunting and melancholic sense and fits well, without either enhancing or distracting from it. Direction is alert and sympathetic.
Writing is decent with some good team interaction. Most of the story is gripping, some of it is very disturbing and creepy. Cherry is a very well realised character, she brings poignancy to the episode but has a lot of guts. The unsub is loathsome enough, though there have been better developed ones before.
Acting is strong, Matthew Gray Gubler being the bright spot of the regulars. Chris Owen is creepy and Courtney Halverson is even better.
In summary, pretty good. 7/10 Bethany Cox
