This had a bit of everything

I am very much a fan of Grantchester, and love the feel of the drama, not quite call the Midwife, more a marginally grittier Father Brown, but this episode seemed to move the show into new territory, very much a harder hitting episode, with lots going on. The crime itself, seemingly a black and white crime turned out to be a lot more complex, with corruption and covers up standing in Geordie's way.

We had Leonard's torment brought to a head this week, as he contemplates something rather bleak, his being gay would have indeed been criminal in the 1950's, his attempts to fit into a 'traditional 50's' life were brilliantly realised by Al Weaver. We also see Geordie's misdemeanours come out.

James Norton continues to be brilliant as Sidney, his emotional showdown with the Archdeacon was incredibly well done. It was also the best storyline for Mrs Maguire, nice to see a more human side to her.

I can't believe how they managed to pack so much into 45 minutes, this was exceptional, the show just gets better and better, it's all leading to a big finale. 9/10

Lost love, broken love, forbidden love, betrayed love, disillusioned love
blanche-220 July 2017
As Geordie (Robson Green) and Sidney (James Norton) attempt to find out who murdered a young woman, things break down in this dark episode of "Grantchester."

Geordie and Sidney each have a crisis of faith: Geordie in the workings of the police as a murder is covered up, and Sidney in the workings of the church, as he witnesses the behavior of self-hating Leonard (Al Weaver) and deals with his own love for the divorced Amanda (Morven Christie).

Mrs. Maguire (Tessa Peake-Jones) is suddenly confronted with her husband, who went to war and never came back. And Geordie has some explaining to do to his wife Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth).

The episode ends with an intense scene between Sidney and the Archdeacon.

Truly excellent with wonderful performances by all. It's going to be interesting to see where this all ends up.

All Things Come to a Head

Warning: Spoilers
This may have been the best of all the episodes I've seen. All the principle male characters are conflicted and being guided by their sexual urges. A young mother is left to die by a young man and he is protected. Sidney keeps secrets from his true love and she demands to know what he wants. Leonard proposes marriage to a woman who has been pursuing him because he is too much of a coward to do anything else. Geordie is finally shown up at a party when he loses his temper. He has to deal with the consequences. Mrs. Maguire is bilked by her lying husband whom she has not seen in tent years. After the big explosion by Sidney with the archbishop after the murderer of the young woman goes free, the young priest takes of his collar and runs off, leaving Leonard to run the church. This really sets up the next offering.

Episode 3.4

The body of a young mixed race woman is found on a factory floor. The owners of the factory are god fearing people but are they also hypocrites as well.

Geordie and Sidney discover that the injuries she has do not match with that of a fall. Worse the woman is still alive but died later in hospital.

The police investigation is interfered with as the factory owner is a freemason and is applying pressure on the Superintendent to make it go away.

As for the personal lives of Geordie, Leonard and Sidney. It is a case of the chickens coming home to roost. Geordie's affair is exposed. Leonard's engagement is short lived. Sidney has a crisis of faith.

Even Mrs Maguire does not escape. Her long lost husband returns. He went to fight in the second world war and now finally returned, he tells her that he is dying.

The mystery was too light. It meant most of the episode got lost in the soap opera elements which the third series has threaten to do since it began.
