The capture of an historical event
Rodrigo_Amaro20 July 2023
An important historical document made by the great Humberto Mauro ("O Descobrimento do Brasil", "Ganga Bruta") that presents a huge political event with the arrival of the ashes and remains of the members of the Inconfidência Mineira movement, led by Tiradentes, during the final years of the 1700's. A group that searched for the ideals of freedom against the ruling of Portugal and they were fighting for Brazil's independence but because of an internal betrayal the group was arrested, and its leader executed and had his body torn apart in several pieces and were hanged on many public squares to show to people what happened with inserructionists. Independence would happen 30 years later after Tiradentes death.

Mr. Mauro films the arrival of the remains that came all the way from Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. It's never quite explained why the Vargas administration wanted this transfer to the then nation's capital since the whole struggle from the Inconfidentes took place in Minas itself. Maybe some proud and joy to show to the public, I don't know. But the documentary (a silent film) shows the military carriage carrying the urns, the political figures and the crowd observing everything, then the movie comes to present in detail the urns. No titles are shown but it's easy to follow all the events and how spectacular it was the whole thing, very solemn.

Highly commendable for those who like to see historical facts, and the image quality is amazingly impressive for a 1930's movie comissioned by the federal government - way different than those scratched newsreels. 8/10.
