"Let's See Those Hands! Nice and Easy!"
lavatch15 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We have now reached the midpoint of "Absentia," and the centerpiece of this episode might best be described as a case of necrophilia. Em holds her shrink hostage, and he talks her through a hypnosis session that leads her back to the orphanage at Barrett House. While playing with the other children in the forest, little Em came across an aspen tree with the bark giving the appearance of a giant eye. Now, decades later and on the run and accused of murdering SA Adam Radford, Em makes a beeline for that tree.

The opening scene of this episode was terrific with Em holding the shrink captive. But the psychiatrist and the police all prove to be stupid in failing listening to what Em is telling them. The most dense of them all is Nick, who learns on the phone that Em is being pursued by the real killer and that their little boy Flynn and Nick's new wife Alice (who is very pregnant) are in grave danger. The idiotic police cling to the notion that Em is delusional.

Who is the major suspect at this point? The indications point to Crown, who now takes over for Radford. As the acting SA in Charge, Crown swears Nick to secrecy. That act is highly suspicious. The only one on Em's side is her beloved dad, who seems more like a savvy cop than the entire Boston Police Department or the FBI.

Taking a bus out of Boston, Em dons a blonde wig and heads for Nottingham Park. Tommy Gibbs and Nick learn from Jack that Em's childhood fantasy was Sherwood Forest, where she longed to escape. They immediately head to Nottingham Park, but not before Em digs up a corpse and recovers a cardio-pulminary device, the serial number of which will divulge the name of the patient that will be a major clue to Em in discovering her tormentor.

Em makes a daring swim across the river outside of Colebrook. She then hides in a bus, as the police are on her track. The "brother trucker" who is the driver takes off, then suddenly stops. Suddenly, the grizzled trucker is suddenly his back in the cab pointing a shotgun at Em: "Let's see those hands! Nice and easy!" Perhaps Em's smell alerted him to her presence. Or perhaps her handling of his cell phone was the tip off. By the close of the program, Em is now falling deeper and deeper into the vortex.

hair goof

Actually, Emily does not dye her hair, she is wearing a blond wig; you can clearly see her removing it and dropping it on the ground shortly after entering the forest (or park). So there is no goof.

The story is pretty thin here.

Nick and Tommy witness Radford being killed, naturally they assume that Emily has done it.

They are really spreading this story out very thinly, it's a ten part series, and at the midway point it's stretched out allowing for virtually do development.

We learn that Emily can speak Russian, has tortured a former colleague, and has appalling taste in wigs.

Where are they going with this, there should be some sort of empathy for Emily, but I have none. She's quite an awful character.

Paul Freeman is very good as Emily's father.

Thin, 5/10.
