1.126: Sonnet #45: Fine as straight delivery, but there isn't a strong narrative base so much as a vague visualization of the text
bob the moo6 July 2017
Reading sonnet 45 before watching the film, I wondered what they would do with it as it is not particularly lending of itself to making a narrative film. There is something here that could be visualized in a more dynamic way, but with these shorts there are limits as to what can be done. This one plays it very straight – both in terms of content but also in terms of going directly to the camera.

The actress gives an expressive performance and does so directly to the camera. Her delivery is clear, sound work is good, and she at least brings out some feeling in the words. The device of having the two elements walking towards her for the short film is very simple as an idea. It also allows them to go away as the final two lines require. As a pure visualization of the words, it is fine, but it brings nothing beyond this apart from a physical representation of the words – there is no meaning within the film of these two people, their relation to the woman, or to use these two characters in a way that adds value to the words.

As straight delivery it is fine, and clearly spoken, but the film doesn't do too much to justify itself as a visual sort film and not just an audio recording.
