Flexible episode orders, the spectre of studios’ own streaming services, the opportunity to party with 50 Cent and an In N Out Burger-fueled riot dominated the chatter among international buyers at this week’s La Screenings. While buying traditional network series may have become slightly more complicated for the global market, and the weeklong sales pitch is no longer quite as opulent as it used to be, there was plenty of interest in the latest slate of dramas and comedies.
Series such as the CBS Studios International-distributed Evil, Warner Bros’ Prodigal Son and Batwoman and Disney’s Emergence were name-checked by foreign buyers as some of the most interesting titles for international.
It was a transitional year for some, particularly Disney and Fox following the merger. Buyers would previously have spent two separate days viewing shows from these studios, but are now treated to one slate from Walt Disney Global...

The 2019-2020 broadcast season is all but set and with it, several clear trends have emerged among the Big 4 and The CW.
The name of the game this year is franchise extensions. There are currently five such shows lined up for next season: “Batwoman” (Arrow-verse) and “Katy Keene” (“Riverdale” spinoff) at The CW; “Mixed-ish” (“Black-ish” prequel) at ABC; “FBI: Most Wanted” at CBS; and “9-1-1: Lone Star” at Fox. NBC had given a straight-to-series order to “Law & Order: Hate Crimes,” but the release of that show has been delayed indefinitely. It remains in active development at the network.
Katz Media Group’s Stacey Schulman told Variety such programming is not surprising as the networks strive for stability in unstable times.
“There’s a lot of money that gets invested in developing shows and it’s certainly a better bet that already has a built-in audience,...

The 2019-2020 broadcast season will be here before we know it, and the schedule for the season has several compelling match ups to offer.
The final seasons of multiple shows will bow this fall, while several freshman shows will find themselves facing stiff competition in their timeslots. Likewise, some returning shows have been shuffled to slots that do not portend well for their futures.
Check out the full schedule below.
NBC’s new legal drama “Bluff City Law” is getting the choice post-“Voice” timeslot, putting it up against ABC powerhouse “The Good Doctor” and CBS’ own legal drama, “Bull.” “Bull” has seen steep declines in its ratings during its third season, however, with the accusations of sexual misconduct against series lead Michael Weatherly not helping matters.

CBS has given a series order to Tommy, a police drama starring Emmy winner Edie Falco. The project hails from Homicide creator Paul Attanasio, Amblin Television and CBS TV Studios.
Tommy had been the last CBS pilot in serious contention at CBS. The network already picked up dramas Evil, FBI: Most Wanted and All Rise and comedies Bob Hearts Abishola, Broke, Carol’s Second Act and The Unicorn.
CBS is not specifying whether series are for fall or midseason, but I hear Tommy is earmarked for midseason to accommodate Falco’s schedule. The series is currently searching for a showrunner.
This is the second pilot by Attanasio with Amblin TV and CBS TV Studios to go to series at CBS, following Bull, which was just renewed for a fourth season. (Amblin TV ended its involvement in that series in the wake of the sexual harassment controversy involving series star Michael Weatherly.

CBS is not specifying whether series are for fall or midseason, but I hear Tommy is earmarked for midseason to accommodate Falco’s schedule. The series is currently searching for a showrunner.

CBS has begun to cull its roster, cancelling four series on Friday including the “Murphy Brown” revival and “Life in Pieces” after 4 seasons.
Along with those two, CBS has cut a pair of other freshman comedies in “Happy Together” and “Fam.” This means that “The Code” and “Ransom” are all that’s left for CBS to make a final decision on, with “Blood & Treasure” and “Instinct” not airing until the summer.
“Happy Together” was loosely based on Harry Styles’ early years in One Direction, starred Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West as a young couple whose lives were thrown into chaos when an up-and-coming pop star (Felix Mallard) moves into their home. “Fam” starred Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell and Gary Cole.

CBS has ordered seven pilots to series for the 2019-20 season ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers next week. The seven series are made up of four comedies and three dramas.
Among the comedies ordered at the broadcast network are Chuck Lorre’s “Bob Hearts Abishola,” Patricia Heaton’s “Carol’s Second Act” and “Broke” from “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman. The Peyton Reed-produced “The Unicorn” with Walton Goggins and Rob Corddry was also picked up.
Heaton starred on CBS’ “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Broke” will see “NCIS” star Pauley Perrette return to the network. The pickups will maintain Lorre’s — who already has “Mom” and “Young Sheldon” coming back next season — strong relationship with the network, after “The Big Bang Theory” says farewell next week.

With the network screenings wrapping up, we are heading into the final stage of pilot season when network executives take the pilots that had screened the best/tested the highest and see which of them fit into their schedules for next season. With ABC’s order Thursday of Black-ish‘s young Rainbow-centered prequel Mixed-ish kicking off the new series pickups, here is our final pilot buzz list.
The field of leading ABC drama contenders has narrowed down a bit. Staying strong after the screenings are early standouts Pi drama Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders, the soapy, John Mayer song-inspired Heart of Life, the new NYPD Blue and the untitled Hank Steinberg /50 Cent legal drama. With April wrapping up, we can once again look back. We’ve officially finished up with the first third of the calendar. As such, I wanted to once again highlight the best of the year so far, consisting of my top ten and various awards for 2019 to date. Much like last time around, when I did the first quarter of the year at the start of April, I’m mostly limiting it to things that have already hit theaters. My only exception in the past has been that I’d include eligible titles from the currently ongoing Tribeca Film Festival, but since that’s still in progress, I’ll hold off. There are some others from the year that I’m fond of and might have otherwise included, but I didn’t want to cheat, so they’re on hold and will be given a special citation. Basically, it’s an arbitrary decision,...

Filmmaker Robert Schwartzman is throwing his hat in the ring with his new distribution company, Utopia. The newly launched company co-founded by Schwartzman will take a “filmmaker first” approach and will venture to SXSW next week to look at new films for potential acquisition. David Betesh, former head of global sales for Gunpowder & Sky, recently joined Utopia as the Head of Sales & Acquisitions.
In addition to sales and acquisitions, Utopia will also launch a technology platform later this year that will offer filmmakers multiple services including a streaming element. When it comes to filmmaker services, the company will focus on creating new revenue and monetization opportunities, improving the direct-to-consumer experience, and helping them maintain a global presence. The company’s platform will give filmmakers more control, higher marketing Roi, and stronger data collection tools than other platforms.

CBS has picked up three more multi-cam comedy pilots, including one from “Crazy Rich Asians” author Kevin Kwan.
Kwan’s project is titled “The Emperor of Malibu.” In the series, when the son of a Chinese billionaire announces his engagement to an American woman, his outrageous family descends upon the couple to win their son back and test drive the American dream.
Kwan will write and executive produce along with David Sangalli. Michelle Nader and Christina Lee will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers with Danielle Stokdyk also executive producing. Warner Bros. Television will produce.
The next pilot is titled “The Unicorn,” about a widower who is eager to move on from the most difficult year of his life. He realizes that he’s utterly unprepared to raise his two daughters on his own, and equally unprepared for the dating world where, to his shock, he’s suddenly a hot commodity.
