Lots of Comical Moments but Lacking in Romance
PalmBeachG12 April 2022
Somewhat of a love triangle - I say somewhat because in order for it to be a love triangle, the 3rd wheel has to let someone know he really likes the girl. A lot of time is spent on character Kwon Jae-hoon pining for the girl he likes but after 8 years hasn't even told her yet. Kwon Jae-hoon is played by. Gong Myung who by the way was my favorite actor in this series. It was because of him that I kept watching it. He plays the serious hard worker at the same company where the second son of the owner is from and gets extra assignments of being a "fixer" of all the problems that arise within the company and always has to take the hits for the rich boy. The rich boy considers him his best friend since he doesn't have any other friends. Then of course the poor hardworking girl enters into the picture too.

There are lots of comical moments in this series that make it fun to watch and lot of lighthearted scenes that are funny so it may be fun to watch for that reason. I was a little disappointed in the ending - who wins the girl? Is it the rich boy or the hard working best friend who does everything for him? Well I really didn't like the ending of this story at all, I wish it was different, but I guess you will have to watch to find out. And even if you disagree with me and like who won the girl, I still think the ending could have been better.

Weekly Isn't Weakly 📅 Sloppy writing/low IQ flushes the ➕message °5.7° °Avg° 💯%🔍

⚖When you're feeling a bit like a tw!t, this is the romcom you watch ~Maybe~ It's perfect to watch for flushing out a tearjerker ~Maybe~ It'll help you lighten up on those pesky heavy emotions ~Maybe~

The good news is it does have its moments. Unfortunately, it's inane, overall. It's stupid like a stupid Hollywood romcom with dumbed-down formulaic writing, and my viewing eyes have expatriated to 🌏 to get away from that junk. Some of the characters' reactions to situations that arise are truly insulting. Then it's insulting to the power of 2, 4, & 8. This we don't appreciate. It's laziness. Perhaps the best thing to be said about RL is that I watched the whole thing. Looking back, maybe that wasn't a good decision, but since I have a lot of ⏳ right now I'm trying to finish the 📺 that I start. If you aren't happy with the earlier episodes, it gets no better. It gets worse. If you are working 5 part-time jobs and don't have much 🕛, this is not the show to squeeze in between shifts to the neglect of better offerings available. It's only worth your time if you are a shut-in like me, or you are seriously in need of something brainless.

Hyuk (Choi Si Won) is the n'er-do-well youngest of a Chairman's family. His brother (the beautifully square-jawed Lee Jae Yoon) will take over the business, but schmyuk Hyuk has never been good at anything except playing around and running with women. That kind of thing will generate a scandal or two. One day he dud it - one scandal too many. Chairdad kicked him out with n⚫thing. Nada. Zilch. Just pocket lint. It's so bad with dad that Hyuk must go into hiding. He needs 💰. He has to work, but he has no skills. Fortunately he just met her (Baek Jun played by Kang So Ra) as she lives near his assistant, Jehun/Je Hoon (Gong Myung). That's two people he can turn to in a crisis, and this is a crisis of unimaginable (to him) proportions. You need work? Jun ain't weakly. She's 📆 weekly! 'Okay,' Jun says: '👣Follow me on the temp-job parade!👣'

After a gig or two they end up as janitors cleaning chairdad's office building... with the opportunity to go FULL💲TIME. She's in heaven. He's in hell, worried he'll be recognized, but she guarantees him he won't be. It is hilarious when Hyuk stands in the lobby and realizes that he's utterly invisible when he's dressed as a janitor. It's a great scene. (Psst - do you know the names of the cleaning people at your job? Do you ever thank them? Common courtesy is free; it costs you nothing to say "Thank you.") Once their little gang moves from the construction site to the corporate gig, they face many challenges together, the ultimate one being the quest for full-time jobs. Temping is just so temporary.

On the whole, though, Hyuk is just too childish. This isn't about the actor (It took about 4 episodes before his goofy smile started to win me over a bit. It dropped on me like a cinder block at a construction site - What a cute little winsome, dimpled smile). It's the way the character is written and directed. This actor should never wear black, btw; it's a dreadful color on him. Overall, his character is a poor 💓 lead. Yes, even in a silly romcom, that matters.

"I can't believe she gets comfort from eating a pig's ear." RL does manage to sweep up here and there; at times it's adorable. In episode 6 I actually laughed out loud. Mom, played by Kyeon Mi Ri who often gets the role of a pampered trophy-wife, is precious. (Even she is too often shrill, though). From a Mars & Venus perspective, it's truly humorous how men are devastated when they hear: "I like you as a friend🤝." Men aren't looking for friends, ladies. Women think they're being °nice°, and women can like someone ~genuinely~ but not be romantically interested in the person. Men don't look at personal interactions the same way, as they prioritize other kinds of connections, ahem. This is an illustration of how being °nice°, is just a °nice° term for WEAK. It's better to be straight and forward. Look at the person, ladies, and tell the truth: 'I have no control over my feelings, and that's not the way I feel right now.' Always be kind & gentle, and always be FIRM. Here's the signing bonus: It will get easier. Flex those social muscles. Next thing you know, your whole life is going to change✨.

Jehun is Hyuk's lifelong friend and assistant. His father worked for the fam, and now he does. In many ways it's worked out well for Jehun, but he and his father have had to put up with alot of demoralizing condescension. It wears on a person. As of episode 11, however, I no longer cared what he was thinking, I didn't care what his motives were, I didn't care about the pain he's had in his life - he's just an a$$, and I couldn't stand him. He's bristly, grumpy, rude, callous, disdainful, cold-hearted, brusque, uncivil, judgmental, unappreciative of his father... he is a consummate jerk. There cannot be a good enough reason for his attitude. There's not many Kromcoms without a love triangle. Je-hun has a thing for Jun and that's added on to the existing pile of baggage. In fairness, he had plenty of time with her and he never made a move, so he has only himself to blame. But it's much more comforting to project our angst onto somebody else. The truth seems to be that he refuses to accept that he's closed off his emotions. His experiences and the hurts that he's suffered have chauffeured him to a bad place. If we don't face the truth about ourselves we only hurt us - and people are just awful at facing truth. We are the chairmen of excuses and blaming - we exist in lies that we tell ourselves, but these lies eventually cage us. This is another form of toxic weakness: Jehun put himself in a cage and is blaming Hyuk for it, while at the same time, he's blind to how distasteful his personality has become.

RL does have a theme: Noblesse obligue. Those of us that have are morally obligated to look out for those less fortunate. There's certainly a time for giving out freebies, but that doesn't fix poverty. Looking out means looking beyond throwing 💰 at problems. It also means to be decent/kind/courteous, volunteer, and yes, certainly give to charities that are on the ground sweeping up the debris that most people step over without a glance🙈. If you think that it's just the rich who are obligated, remember that by world standards, the entire middle class in the USA IS RICH. We could confiscate the wealth of the top 3% of the rich in this country and it wouldn't make much of a dent. We all need to do our part. "Where am I now? Is this Seoul, the city I've been living in all this time?" Hyuk is surrounded by day workers scrounging to be chosen for work, and he's shocked. They've always been there, but he's never seen them before🙈. Every society has people that have been left behind, and we put blinders on because we don't know how to fix it. Then we get used to those blinders and no longer see the disadvantaged, or we tell ourselves (we lie) that they are thus due to their own fault - that's not always the case, and who among us hasn't made mistakes, anyway? It's not just the jobless, many workers are left behind. Workplaces don't need to be miserable. Bosses have a tiny bit of power, and power is one thing that flushes some of the character turds to the surface. People that abuse power to feed their pride are horrible, and also horribly delusional. How does belittling another person elevate them? It doesn't, but it does reveal how small their minds are. We can talk about laws and oversight, but the truth is that this is a matter of the💛 and we cannot legislate the 🖤. I've seen bully bosses operate and I've been victimized by one. Nobody wanted to speak up. Everyone kept their heads down hoping they wouldn't be the next 🎯. This is where social strength becomes important - we should call out abusive bosses - kindly, gently, and firmly, but not weakly. Noblesse obligue. We need to look out for eachother. Workers Unite!

I was watching Oh My Venus(7.4) at the same time as this. OMV could also be classified as a silly, throwaway romcom but it is so much better than RL, so RL suffered from the side-by-side quality inspection. In order of ~lite & trite~ to ~heavy & serious~ you may also like:

A Winner
bsweney22 June 2020
I don't know why other amateur reviewers like me have been so lukewarm about "Revolutionary Love". Sheltering at home this spring, I've been cheered up by Korean and Chinese serials, and this is one of the better ones. It has characters in large and smaller roles you come to care about and cheer for when they succeed in various ways, villains you love to hate, a believable love story, and a look at various aspects of modern Korean culture. Of course there are standard characters like the plucky heroine and the evil industrialist, but these are especially well done. A bonus was one of the heroes, who at first-to Western eyes at least-seemed more funny-looking than handsome (the actor has a wonderfully mobile face) and becomes more and more appealing in looks as well as actions as the story goes on. It's not on the very top of my list, but it's definitely near the top. I hated to have to say good-bye to the characters.

Misunderstood
newkrejados12 October 2020
It seems many of the reviewers believe the revolutionary love in question is of a romantic nature but, in fact, it is not about romance at all - even though there is a romantic (and totally predictable) element. Embracing oneself, discovering the power that self-love unleashes and using it to live a moral life is the revolutionary love.

Typical not revolutionary!
ATD678 June 2020
The story is your typical love triangle with several mis-understandings and assumptions which always ends up having the main character second guess their feelings about the so-called love interest despite all the mis-leadings and lies. Not too typical in real life situations but too common in many k-dramas . Need more originality!

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews30 June 2018
Had this drama dropped, but opted to watch it after all. After competing it I've got to say that it didn't really changed my mind about the story or the romance. The good thing, probably one of the few good things, about this drama are the performances that are good. I like both Siwon and Gong Myung from their previous dramas and since this one was Siwon's come back from the military hiatus, I had to try it. The story however was weak and lucked originality. The rich son who fell for the hard working poor girl isn't something you rarely watch in dramas and Revolutionary Love didn't help to break that stereotype. At least the love triangle was nice and I enjoyed the relationship between Joon and Je Hoon. The main romance, though, was boring and kind of lucked chemistry. So, because of the boring plot, 4 out of 10.

Revolutionary Love - a feel good friendship and romance
leahcubed24 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
9/10 is my rating. This is a 2017 South Korean Romantic Comedy drama with 16, 60 minute episodes.

Baek Joon (Kang So-ra) learned at a very young age that she only had herself to rely on. Her father died after devoting his life to the Gangsu group but was ruined financially after exposing corporate corruption. After witnessing her father's downfall as a result of his alliance to one company she vowed to never chain herself down in such a way. She happily works multiple part time jobs to avoid chaining herself to what she perceives as a large corporate monster. Kwon Jae-hoon was Joon's first love and he has remained friendly but not directly expressed any romantic interest. He is responsible and career driven to a fault and often criticizes (he considers it encouragement). Joon for not seeking out a more permanent position. The difference in opinion on what comprises responsible adulthood is suspected as the reason Joon and Jae-hoons relationship has never developed beyond friendship. Byun Hyuk (Choi Si-won) is a Chaebol and as the younger son of Byun Kang-soo (Choi Jae-sung), the chairman (of the Gangsu group) Byun Hyuk (Choi Si-won). Since he is has not been tasked with any major responsibilities in the company, his main goal is to stay out of trouble and keep the companies' name out of the papers. As a carefree rich playboy, Hyuk finds himself frequently doing things that foster negative attention and his childhood friend and current "keeper" Jae-hoon is responsible for cleaning up the messes Hyuk makes. This "fixer" role has now fallen to Jae-hoon who observed his father doing the same and resents Hyuk because his father once took the wrap in Hyuk's stead. Joon accidentally meets Hyuk when the hotel where she works at winds up kicking them both out for different reasons. The hotel failed to recognize the hotel owner's second son so Joon also assumes he is a "commoner" just like her. The two get to know each other as Joon helps Hyuk make his way in the outside world (Hyuk is avoiding going back and facing his dad over his latest escapade). Hyuk is immediately enamored with this girl who is unlike any he has ever known - she gives him the confidence to break out of his playboy mode. Which is actually just what his older brother, Byun Woo-sung (Lee Jae-yoon), the elder son of Byun Kang-soo, fears the most. He wants to be the sole successor to his father and is worried Hyuk may mature and take all or part of what he considers to be his. Joon assumed that Hyuk had money and status so he had everything and Hyuk assumed that Joon had neither and thus did not have anything. As the two grow closer they learn that having everything material can equate to having nothing that matters and having nothing material does not mean you have nothing that matters. The three Hyuk, Joon and Jae-hoon all have reason to resent Gangsu group and work together to expose the corruption. Both men like Joon but one wants her to change while the other loves how she is.

Spoilers. I loved how confident and independent the lead girl was. She also had a wisdom that extended beyond education and that is what drew people to her. Hyuk was smitten from the moment he met her and it was easy to understand why he would have been, The second guy was handsome but very somber and somewhat of a tsundere toward the girl. It was hard to feel very sorry for him because he literally had years to confess to the girl. Hyuk on the other hand followed her around like a happy puppy and readily confessed to her. Hyuk's dad was abusive both physically and emotionally to his sons. He was even physically abusive to some of his employees. Not very likable as a father. Hyuk's mom was like Hyuk and it was refreshing to have the wealthy mom actually love the idea of the lead girl as a daughter in law. I loved how Hyuk made friends with Jun's friends and they helped them carry out their many missions. I have seen the bias people have about wealthy people thinking they are all out of touch and have it made. I personally have never felt that way. There are nice, down to earth, wealthy people as well as.poor people who have no compassion for others. Being rich or poor does not define how you are as a human being. I am also a firm believer that children can be very different from their parents. This series explored both of those concepts. I found the ending a bit rushed and inconclusive. The brother had done horrible things but it seemed nothing happened to him. Our lead couple are leaving on a trip together but she never made her feelings for him clear. Overall it was good and I recommend just the ending fell a little flat.

The development, the twists and the humour like a Künstlerroman
BenjaminMa283 March 2022
It is very impressive on how uplifting the overall drama was, not only on Hyuk's developments but the humour inputs by all the other characters. The only pity part was how Je-hun wasn't given a nice closure. I would've appreciated it if the director paired Je-Hun with the flight stewardess; though Je-Hun is abit uptight, he is the epitome of subtle and internal love and care. On the realistic plane, Hyuk's meeting with Joon is over trivialized - I want more substance over that part. THIS DRAMA IS A TOP-NOTCH DRAMA BECAUSE YOU WOULD WANT THIS TO CONTINUE AS THOUGH IT'S ALL REAL. The fight for a more egalitarian and loveable society, embraced by unity!

THE ONLY KOREAN DRAMA I WILL WATCH
sonytv-1466816 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The preview on netflix on how the man hiding in the laundry basket inside the lift, gritting teeth and trying with all his might not to fart is enough to raise my curiosity about this K-drama. A little bit of context: The main actress is the housekeeping and the man is in the laundry basket and there is a police officer inside the lift. She was trying to hide the man from the police and the man keep making some farts apparently from some stomach discomfort. She kicked the laundry basket in an attempt to tell him not to do it, and he tried. The police officer was showing her the picture of him asking her some questions, and this is when he cannot hold it anymore and made the biggest farting noise and thus filled the air with his stench. The awkward face on the police and the main actress is priceless!

Before attempting to watch this k-drama I yawned at all the top k-drama like crash landing on you, what is wrong with secretary kim after watching some bits and pieces of it. Apparently those are the korean dramas in trend right now, but to me it doesn't even hold my interest. So this apparently make revolutionary love a DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH.

What is not to like? the comedy is top-notch, the acting is unbelievably good, the settings, the way they shoot the film, the places they shoot the scene, the storyline, its the best I ever seen in a k-drama. I will even put this k-drama up there with some of the best tv series like money heist, himym, friends, etc.

Besides the comedy, there are some truths in the korean upper class vs the lower class people that just warms your heart in their struggles to fit into society. The upper class live the life like kings while the have-nots are easily discarded when they reach a certain age.

That said there are many exaggerations in the plot of course since this is after all a K-drama like how they keep bumping into the same people on a random street or place over and over again? And the people they bump into, their friends happen to be again someone you were involved with. However if you are willing to overlook this unrealistic coincidental meetings and enjoy the show, I can guarantee the good far outweigh the bad. Even the songs produced for the tv series is top notch and suits the show like a glove.

Granted when I write this review I am only on episode 12 out of 16, but there is not a single episode which I found it is quite boring or that maybe I should fast-forward the scene. No each episode and every single minute of it is enjoyable, with funny scenes, romantic scenes, heart-warming scenes of some small victories of the struggling working class. This drama is so good that this will probably the only k-drama I will bother to sign up on IMDB and write a review on, that despite not having watched it to the end! That is how good it is!

I think even after I finished watching the whole series I will probably play the tv series songs on my spotify, which I already am doing. This korean drama is so perfect that if you don't even watch K-drama like me, this is the only one you should watch because it will blow your mind away that a k-drama can be this good.

Main lead is a manchild. Frustrating to watch.
randomlychosenww3 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Can't stand how useless and ignorant the male lead is. There's a difference between being spoiled and completely lack any common sense. I extremely hate when he went to the police to confess not because he genuinely felt bad and regretted his actions but solely because he wanted to impress the female lead. He also repeatedly does things without thinking because he knows his dad's status and money would get him out of all trouble. In the end he's still just a spoiled kid trying to impress a girl by acting all tough and mighty. He's not capable of doing anything right on his own. I was expecting to see him make some good decisions that will change my impression of him but his actions are all based on the mindset that "my dad is the chairman, even if I f this up, nothing can happen to me."

Commonplace storyline
eli-stuttgart1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The actress is really incredibly pretty and she plays her role well. However, I was bored and waited until the series was finally over.

For one thing, the beginning, the first episode, was no intrigue to continue watching, but I gave myself a jolt to give it a chance with every episode. The plot and some special scenes were a worn out replica of millions of other banal series, books, etc.

Also the message was understandable on the whole, but it was another typical story about a rich, spoiled son who fell in love with a hard-working, poor and cheeky woman. So nothing special...

Also I did not understand some things at all.

Why do the two sons compete with each other when the real heir is usually the first-born?

The hotel manager looked a lot like the mother, was it the same actress?

What happened to the relationship between the brothers? Where did this envy and hatred come from? Was the older son forced to do it by his father?

The end was disappointing, because many things were not solved after all. (See above) Also the relationship between the two main characters had not developed further, at least not in a way that it became visible to the audience. In the same way, I couldn't see the transformation of the secondary characters, which change they embodied.

I could not understand the facial expressions of the main character, because it seemed exaggerated and sometimes senseless. Also the sound effects were reminiscent in a negative sense, because they were boundless and excessive. However, I liked the shrill "Oh my God".

At the beginning I had the strong feeling that the K-Drama was shot a bit longer ago. The position of the cameras changed much too quickly and the colours looked a little blurry. In some scenes you could clearly see the bad quality.

Doesn't have to be looked at...

Truly Awful
abscondus4 August 2021
I really like Super Junior and I knew Siwon had done some acting, but I had no idea how bad it was. Maybe it's just the show which is pure American style sitcom farce. If you like shows like that then you may like it.

KDramas are often noted for their production values and that can save a weak show, but this show was shot just like any average American sitcom so nothing of interest there. Characters were cartoon cutouts and so utterly uninteresting. Even the real life references to the way workers are exploited and then cast aside in Korea couldn't make me care about them. Watch My Mister if you want to see that problem handled in a skillful way. So, not my cup of tea, but lots of people liked it so give it a try. You'll know if you like it before the first episode ends.
