Garth Marenghi made a werewolf film
rothrouga19 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, I agree with everyone else. The core concept behind this is great.... however the execution is awful.

Watch Garth Marenghi's Dark Place and then watch this. I think my favourite bit of terrible sound editing is split between the generic crackling fire sound or when they bang their swords against their wooden shields to a metallic CLANG noise.

At the end (spoiler) a woman randomly turns up and delivers the solution behind what has been going on, in a way that has blatantly been dubbed on in the post edit to try and tie things together.

Never been more glad of my cineworld membership, my history loving boyfriend came out laughing manically

Unmitigated Disaster
Athanatos1733 March 2020
No matter what, the first rule of writing is to try to keep a film as historically accurate as possible, which can allow you to create situations around real events.

This movie just destroys all its credibility 4 minutes in with female legionnaires. I understand the current and understandable equality movements and fully support them, but you cannot impose modern values into a movie that takes place two thousand years ago. There were no women serving in any fighting capacity in the Roman Legion, PERIOD.

Secondly the acting is very wooden and the costumes and armor look like they were just made as they actually gleam. The special effects were also quite bad as was the writing. Due to the low budget they went for shaky cams in the battle scenes to make you so dizzy that you couldn't make out what was going on.

As I write this review over half the calculated ratings for this movie are 9's and 10's. The cast and crew must have quite a few friends is all I can say.

Low budget doesn't always mean a bad movie, but it does in this case.

Not Recommended.

Sadly this was no Dog Soldiers
dchislett-659-82058017 September 2019
I was persuaded to come and watch this by my mate on our weekly trip to the cinema. We've seen many many films over the years, some good and some bad. This sadly rests comfortably in the latter camp. The premise sounds exciting. Who doesn't like Romans and Werewolves? The scenery was nice and the costumes were pretty cool, and they obviously had some good camera kit as the images were crisp. Try as I might I couldn't find anything in me to care much about the characters. I didn't get that they were a crack troop from their practices or actions, I couldn't understand if there was supposed to be some sub plot about the scout, and frankly I didn't care. I think this might the first film I've not rushed back from the toilet for, which is a shame as they obviously cared about what they were making and were giving it everything. Something was missing for me and I can't really explain what that was. Sadly I think that might be the case for quite a few people!

If you want a film with soldiers and werewolves watch Dog Soldiers. It may not be a great cinematic tour-de-force but it's fun to watch and the characters were really engaging.

How was this shown at a multiplex?!
lordweffington18 September 2019
Let's start with the positives: there was a very clear shot of the moon - a crisp, clear image, the score had musical instruments in it and the beards looked real. It's not very long.

Other than that....every thing about this was just plain bad. Awful. If an infinite number of monkeys etc could blah blah Shakespeare, one monkey with half a crayon and a piece of cardboard and a hangover would be embarrassed to have written this. And the director may not even have been an animal. A houseplant, perhaps? Each actor said their monkey-written lines in turn, then a pause, then the next actor says something daft. This wasn't even so bad it's quite funny. I can't say anymore because writing this is making me remember the film which is making me feel tired and cold inside.

If you're at home and looking for a way to pass some time and the choice is this or unblocking a septic tank with your bare hands, good luck and wear safety glasses...

How did this make it beyond YouTube?
tobycross20 September 2019
Firstly, I have to confess that I got so fed up with this film that I left after 1hr, so if anything good happens beyond the 60min point then, dang it, I missed it!! But I based on what I DID see it's pretty unlikely.

The premise of a Werewolf in Roman Briton was very appealing. Indeed, the legend of the lycanthrope is referenced in Gaius Petronius Arbiter's 'Satyricon' written in AD60 - so there is even some historical relevance. But that's where the interesting stuff ends.

The acting is wooden, the costumes are too bright and shiny and the "hey, my buddy just bought a drone, let's use that for every shot" cinematography was a real drag. Sadly, it wasn't even bad enough to be charming. The only positive thing I can say is that some of the lighting was dramatic. As for everything else, Poorly executes families tropes from a bygone era.

Tillbrooke19 September 2019
85 minites of this utter dross tested my patience! Zero acting, talking head script and special effects makeup that kids wouldn't use on their Halloween costumes. Avold in the cinema, dvd or the streaming platforms. Save the 85 mintites for something else - bathing the dog, cleaning the toilet , spending time with the in- laws, anything but wasting it on this dross.

A grown man has made a student film
cinemawithcj18 September 2019
Wolf can be respected as a movie that has been made and put out in cinemas...and also inspirational in the fact that if this movie can get made, anyone can do it.

Wolf feels exactly like the too ambitious movie project a student would make. Brilliant drone shots escorted by a horrible expositional script that feels very much shot around the idea but without the budget or vision to execute the screenplay.

The casting really does feel amateur and student-like, down to the director/writer/producer and the token old actor and recast characters.

It's a shame, Wolf could have been more with stupid cheesy werewolf effects or with microphones that worked. Instead the film is poorly edited, sounds amateur, and effectively is an 85 minute movie that feels like a 180 minute one.

I've never left a review on here before, however I'd also never left a film early until now. Thankfully I have a cinema membership so I didn't pay entry for this otherwise i would have been looking for a refund or transfer to another film. Poor acting, script, pace, camera work, this film had me redeeming qualities for me.

Rubbish.
karloffuncanny18 September 2019
I have been watching films now for 40 plus years and I can honestly say that this is the worst film I have ever seen. Can't really add to what others have said except it makes Cubby Brown's UFO look like Citizen Kane.

Wolf ... more like cry wolf.
Kai_Proctor17 September 2019
Oh Dear.

Start with the good bits. Costumes and make up were fine. Location : sunny and snowy Scotland. Acting wasn't bad.

Now for the bad bits. The script was bereft of polish and drafts. The plot left a lot to be desired. Special effects for the monster(s) lacking, perhaps a lack of budget was the culprit. The fangs were at best amateurish or cheap - being kind.

Cinematography was acceptable. However some parts could have used some rudimentary lighting assistance in the shape of some reflectors to counteract the shadowing of the eyes which any film student worth their salt would have noticed immediately. Cardinal sin - you have to see the actors faces in particular their eyes. it's no use if their eyes are in blackness or shadow.

Lack of variety of wide angle shots showing the characters, except for the aerial drone or Arriflex shots. Didn't give the audience a sense of varied perspective.

Watch, Wolfen, An American Werewolf in London, The Company of Wolves, Silver Bullet or Ginger Snaps instead of this garbage.

In short avoid.

Rating withheld for reasons of the ability to rate zero out of ten.

Craps on history and the horror genre
RvBreukie2 March 2020
Sometimes when you watch a movie, you start to think about what the director and writers thought at the start thought the finished product would be like. Honestly, they should have thought about it and left it at that.

Poor script, poor acting, very few moments of historical correctness and gone overboard with political correctness. I mean, a female legionairre? I'm all for having tough women in movies, but a female legionairre simply wouldn't have happened, Romans wouldn't even have considered it. I get this is fantasy, but it's based on reality. Then they should at least get the historical foundation right, same goes for some of the equipment. It's not that hard to find someone who actually has knowledge about the Roman period and army. It just shows that the director and writers didn't even take their own movie serious, how is an audience supposed to be seriously entertained by it then?

My advice would be to skip this and find yourself a movie of at least some quality to entertain yourself.

Just horrible
kelchu27 September 2019
Saw the poster for this and my cinema buddy and I decided, why not there's nothing else on. Wish I'd just stayed in bed............ This is basically the dog soldiers script ripped off and now Roman soldiers doing the hunters being hunted thing. The acting is terrible, the special effects (and I use the phrase very woefully) are appalling. The weapon play is disastrous and like another review said the best part of the movie is the moon at the start and the end credits. I wasn't sticking around to see if there were any post credit scenes. Sincerely this is 1 1/2 hours of my precious life I and whoever watches this can never get back.

It must be some kind of a joke!!!
schumacherro16 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Is this serious???? Was really this movie allowed to be produced, directed and released in cinema??? If I knew that is THIS bad, I would have stayed at home and better watch some old Tom & Jerry cartoons instead!! First of all, what was a black woman doing in the Roman army??? This is making fun out of history!! I will just randomly mention a few other things from the movie. A man mentions that he thought that Romans are usually travelling by at least 10, yet in the beginning they are saying that looking for a 3 men missing. Throughout almost the entire movie there are close ups, so we cannot see the surroundings, most of the time all of them are without their helmets, yeah, very good defense, later on from somewhere some blankets will appear as well to cover themselves in the freezing cold. A woman is pretending to be cleaning herself by a river NAKED in the FREEZING cold and she is not in a hurry at all, doesn't show the slightest sign of being cold. In a dark forest, full moon or not, doesn't matter, there is some light ONLY wherever the soldiers are, once they move out of the scene they immediately disappear in pitch dark!! :). Then finally in the last 10 minutes we will see these creatures which for some reason supposed to be called werewolves!! Earlier one of the soldiers says that he is noticing some animal footprints which should be ones of a wolf, but as we can see, these "werewolves are no more than humans with fangs in their mouths, naked, not even covered by fur and all of a sudden in the end they are killed just like that, while back in the beginning they were standing in a circle, they were even BITTEN by them while they couldn't even SEE the creatures!!! :). So, yes... there are many other huge failures, all together the whole production is a huge failure, so as a summary, I hope that I can help people not to bother wasting their times with this.... thank you for reading.

hao-858207 March 2020
I really wanted to give this movie a chance, really... But when I saw a black woman beeing a full plated Roman soldier, I gave up... Where this world is goin to? Black Margaret of Anjou, black Heimdahl, black Achilles. I'm begging you people, STOP! I really don't mind black Nick Fury, black Kingpin, black this-guy-from-The-Legend (all fictional characters) but you have no idea, how much you are killing the movie, by altering historical facts so much!

I could only manage about 30mins of this tripe. Awful acting and script, although some of the cinematography was quite good.

If anyone can fill me in as to the ending (if anyone actually stayed to the end?).

A low budget shocker based on a great story idea but badly executed
bgajunkie18 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I wondered why Cineworld decided to basically shove this film into a missable time slot and one week run. Yeah, I get it. It was admittably at first glance, a pitifully low budget film like a stage play transferred to the screen but that didn't mean it could have not have worked. The lack of stand-out vfx, the barely workable dialogue and wooden by the numbers delivery by half the cast, the others led to overdramatizing a simple line in order to lend weight to their appearance - led me to feel that the whole production was conducted over an intensely short time limit and consequently was rushed to completion every step along the way. I feel that it's likely the original scope of the movie was bigger, with a consequently bigger budget for everything, especially vfx. In the end, it turned out to be a make do production.

The basic idea of a Romans Vs Werewolves story, from a dark age of Britain, set up in the North far from civilization with only the wild Pict barbarians for any interest in a barren cold unforgiving land - is a good basis for a horror story. Writer & director Stuart Brennan also acted in this film too, and it shows. Like a one-man self-production, if I hadn't been sure he was on screen, I would have thought he was manning the camera as well. Stuart Brennan has made a worthwhile contribution to British film-making out of self-producing, writing, directing and acting at various times in his films across his career in film, and at times has carried it off well. Though, not this time.

In execution, the film comes across like a BFI film school student movie. In which case, as it was shot - yes it would have worked brilliantly as a short of about 25-30 mins. And of course, Brennan should have relaxed the reins and only stuck to the actor and writing duties, there then would have been scope for another director to make more out of the film in the shortened time allowed, tightening up precedings considerably and giving it a short, sharp shock delivery.

Some of the female actors playing warrior women and soldiers at times actually felt natural and of their time period. Though the costumes and dressing of the actors were mostly an afterthought, and this had a profound effect in the way they portrayed their roles as fighters. Also not enough rage was shown by the infected soldiers to project the pain and madness that overcame them, as the infection proceeded to ultimately change them from human to beast. The swordplay could have been more effective. One particular scene could have been made much more dramatic, exciting and effective if the camera shutter ran at double speed for the swordplay scenes in order to crank up the action but slowed down to half-speed when this could have been used to show the disorientation of the agitated scared soldiers - and the infected trying to cope with the increasingly sickening effects of the werewolf bites. These are are staple of movies action sequences and done well is pleasing to the viewer. I think there may have been some camera shutter speed effect during the villager storytelling flashback scenes.

I did enjoy the landscape scenery, so kudos to the location manager, the cinematography was quite good overall and kept me in my seat at the cinema - except for the staging of the night scenes, in the circumstances given the overabundance of lighting which is a definite giveaway to a film's low-budget origin, if not done well. This led to a lessening of any tension that would naturally have been felt by the viewer, as the soldiers huddled together can't see anything beyond a few feet around them, yet the camera seems at least 30-50 feet away in order to get everyone in shot, so too much light in the scene. The only thing I will remember fondly of this film a year from now, is the quick speed flash movements of the werewolves, the camera work and sound in these instances provided genuine apprehension and heightened tension.

I have read the laughably brief 1/10 rated copy and paste parrotted reviews left on and I'm certain most reviewers couldn't be bothered to spend time actually stating what it was they absolutely abhorred about this film, so just copied the previous review. In doing so, other reviewers who may have had some to contribute just decided not to, and let the film stay dead without providing any help by trying to revive the poisoned corpse. I unbelievably still admire this film even if it did leave me totally unmoved.

If this film ever makes it to TV, Horror Channel or Film4, I will watch it again to see if there was anything I missed in the actual storytelling itself. Not the filmed action. If I had watched this on TV, I probably would have changed channels or left the cable box on record to catch up with it later when I was bored. 5/10 rating - worth watching if nothing else is at hand on TV or as a download.

Edit: May 2020. I revised down my rating, but I still believe that this film deserves more than the 1/10 or 2/10 rating that most reviews have given it. I just watched a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode "reviewed" watch of Hamlet, the TV version from 1960 starring Maximilian Schell - a great actor normally, but utterly wasted on this production. And seriously, not even the jokey live commentary by the MSTY 3000 spaceship crew, saved this Hamlet. It was s*** and I can't believe this episode ever aired. Now that is a 1/10 review. Not even swearing, gratuitous nsex and violence would have saved this Hamlet. So, in comparison, Wolf (2019) is a masterpiece - 10/10!

So poor I feel quite angry
mygdprprotection18 September 2019
I don't normally leave poor reviews but there us always a first time.

I must share some of the blame, I should have checked reviews first, I usually do, but this time I saw Romans - check and Werewolves - check. I wasn't expecting it to be great but I wasn't expecting it to be so terrible.

Luckily I have Cineworld Unlimited so you could say at least it didn't cost me anything, but I still feel cheated. It stole my time, I could have been watching something else.

Please avoid this film, it is very bad, and not in a "so bad it is funny" sort of way.

female soldiers in the Roman army?!?
robertopoletti3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film has opened a new horizon for me. I just discovered that women were hired as soldiers in Roman legions. But i cannot make sense why the soldiers in the film are not driving cars or using mobile phones. If we want to be anachronistic, let's be consistent.
