Intriguing premise, but uneven results
watrousjames8 December 2022
This film is a low budget independent Christian film with a really intriguing premise. What if God sent St. Paul to 21st century America? The movie tries to answer that. I wondered if the film would be absolutely terrible, which it isn't. Yet, it is quite uneven. The biggest problem was that some of the acting in this film was really bad, though mostly it was smaller parts. The main actor who plays Paul was pretty good. The young American man he befriends was definitely green when it came to acting, but he wasn't terrible. The actress who becomes the young man's love interest was actually quite good.

As Paul is about to be executed he is transported (or translated as they call it in the film) to 21st century rural Oregon, where a truck driver picks him up. Paul can't speak English, but the truck driver figures out he speaks Greek (ancient Greek to be exact). The truck driver, who is a lapsed Christian who went to Bible college, takes Paul home with him to Eugene, OR. Paul learns English within two months, which seemed a bit farfetched to me. (Yes, the real Paul was a really smart man, but I still think it would take longer to learn English.) When Paul learns there are Christians in the 21st century he is happy, but he is unhappy to find out there are divisions in Christianity. He would like the various congregations to come together and pray together and start a movement to push unity. Not all pastors are keen on this. One pastor, in particular, thinks he's a fraud. Obviously, this causes conflict.

I liked the ecumenical message of the film. The film was made by Evangelical Protestant Christians. Paul does attend a Catholic mass, which I thought was good. Paul comes across as a very nice man, but Paul in his letters had a temper, which we never see. On the other hand Paul wants to work and not live by handouts, which was true. The real Paul made a living as a tentmaker while he traveled around the Roman Empire spreading the Gospel. The script itself wasn't terrible, but it could've been better in spots. As I stated some of the acting, by mostly, smaller characters, was bad.

If you are a Christian it is worthwhile seeing once. I enjoyed it despite its flaws, but I probably won't watch it again.

REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT

There is nothing "typical" about this "Christian" movie. It actually highlights a lot of non biased points that need to be addressed more often. I really enjoyed this movie and all it offered, not the cookie cutter "Christian" movie. Enlightening and entertaining. Thanks to the writer/director for a wonderful new perception about denominations and the insight to how original believers saw things.

Translated: Neo-Evangelical take on the Apostle Paul in Modern Times
DeusWar4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A great idea for a film in which the Apostle Paul is somehow mysteriously taken from first century Rome and placed in the 21st century American northwest area of Eugene, Oregon. It started off as a really good movie for about 30-45 minutes complete with realistic Greek as well as Hebrew speaking with English subtitles. As the movie progressed it went on many rabbit trails and became unclear as to its plot. Who was the main character? Paul or Tim? Why all the unnecessary scenes about dating the reporter? Interpretive dance? Villains plotting, then no resolution? It tried to create a movie about Paul, a movie about Tim and his romance, and a side-scene about some villains that oppose Paul. It was a good idea, but got lost in itself somewhere along the way. The editors could have easily cut about 30-40 minutes to focus on the main character to really create something good, but instead we got a lot of scenes of church people that wanted to be in a movie.

Theologically, the movie was highly questionable which was the greatest disappointment. It was more of a cool Neo-Evangelical take on how the Apostle Paul should act as well as how the church in general is messed up.

In the movie Paul works illegally at a wine vineyard that is used to create wine? Paul is non-judgmental in one scene toward Tim's room-mate that is about to fornicate, in which he basically says only God can judge and later apologizes to him. They end by going into his room to play video games. We get the impression that Paul was a weakling when it came to moral issues. Paul also meets with various pagan religious leaders to learn about them, but never to challenge them with the gospel as that would be judgmental. Hardly anything like Paul from the scriptures. There is a jail scene where Paul is falsely imprisoned and the jailer confesses his personal sin to him, but is utterly lacking of any gospel presentation. (Would have been a perfect time for it.) Also, Tim's room-mate somehow comes to Christ, but we don't know how it happened. We see him Baptized, but that is about it. Paul does a miracle, but no gospel is mentioned at all. After the miracle he gets his own TV show by weakly giving into a producer who compels him to sign an agreement, but we don't know anything about what he says or does on the show. Paul was a real jelly-spine when the world pressured him apparently.

Finally, Paul's main reason for coming to the future is to somehow create an ecumenical alliance of various groups in Eugene Oregon, while condemning their divisions. This is the ultimate Neo-Evangelical fantasy -- to bring everyone together for a huge kumbaya session while utterly disregarding any kind of doctrine. This is the complete opposite of anything that Paul taught in the Bible. Paul comes off as an impotent old man that never judges, never shares the gospel, is cool, and promotes some kind of silly unbiblical ecumenical unity. Biblically, this movie is highly questionable.

As I watched I thought it would be an interesting take to have Paul come to the future to create an ecumenical alliance quickly in order to prepare a one-world-church for the Anti-Christ. Would have made a good thriller! But, alas I got a cool Neo-Evangelical Paul instead. Oh well, it was free. Thank you Encourage TV on Youtube.

Thought Provoking
bobsc524 December 2019
Of course the time travel thing ... but, with God all things are possible. No, this movie will not make you a believer in time travel. But I found it fascinating, to consider what it would be like if Paul were to visit our town in our time. And the movie pulled me in, like a book I can't put down. Jesus, Yeshua, is lifted up, and people are drawn to Him. They are changed forever.

Don't waste your time

Warning: Spoilers
I made it to the part where the kid takes St. Paul to a Catholic Church and then tells him he can't take communion because he isn't a baptized Catholic. Unbelievable. If he isn't a baptized Catholic, who is and what is he???? Theologically weak. Paul doesn't wonder about trucks and cars, computers, electric lights, indoor plumbing or anything else, just takes it all in stride. The acting is amateur and script awful. Just put something else on.

Excellent Story on a Low Budget
jhannan30 September 2021
I'm a non-practicing Christian who loves SciFi movies and has enough education from catholic school growing up to understand the plot and story lines.

The movie takes us through a fairly realistic view (IMO) of what would happen if a guy suddenly showed up claiming to be an apostle that had been FFwd'd 2,000 years into the future. I did enjoy that part the most.

The remaining part of the movie is a reflection on how religion is practiced in today's society and some ideas around that. Even though I am non-lracticing I still enjoyed that.

I for sure think it is worth a watch even if just for the part of chalky seeing society reacting to a 2,000 YO man, and vice-versa.

DO NOT watch this movie if the following are true: you will nitpick plot holes to say why they are unrealistic (it IS a time travel movie), second class cinematography bothers you (for sure not a Hollywood film, but is indeed well done for a Low Budget film), amateur acting bothers you (they did great given what they had but for all but "Kayla", I believe it was their first film), and a you get bothered by religious reference/portrayal or inaccuracies.

Otherwise, have fun!

Typical "Christian" IGNORANNCE of scripture! Not even one time does this GARBAGE "Christian" movie mention REPENTANCE. The Apostle Paul would have NEVER called the unrepentant to unity. The unrepentant are ALREADY in unity!

Who do you say I am?
tftravers6 December 2019
Excellent and thought provoking. Jesus asked the disciples, " who do the people say I am?". Then he asks the intimate question with eternal ramifications, who do you say I am?

The movie clearly demonstrates that people are judging the messenger and not discerning the good news of the gospel.

The power God to heal and to transform lives was beautifully and subtlely illustrated in the movie

The ending baptism scene was the exclamation point to the movie.

Great idea, poor execution
dorothyb-9047123 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So, overall the idea was good, but Paul acts way differently than the scriptural Paul acts. Also, the movie is very low budget and it is very apparent. From the lack of decent transitions to the missing background sounds and music, as well as the jumpy feel of the whole movie, the message is lost. Also, the plot takes too many weird turns. And the scenes that seem to build to something never develop into anything. There are some funny moments but if you are any sort of a film buff spare yourself the torture. In the first 5 minutes, one of the main rules of filming is broken and you can see the cameraman's reflection during different parts of the movie. Also, the whole thing is too long and has too many underdeveloped scenes. With a movie that long there needed to be a lot more on-screen development and not implied. So if you are a devout Christian or someone who enjoys seeing the errors in low-budget films, it could be worth your time, but otherwise, I say pass it up for something more put together.

Neat!! HOWEVER...
mvike10 October 2020
This is such a fun movie! I'll be upfront & let people know, it IS INDEED one of those super churchy type of films, where it even has the "cool, hip black Christian" guy that is such a dumb stereotype in itself. You know the one...he's the super cool, down with it, urban guy; but not TOO "hood" because it's so obviously Christian made. The guy that the creators think will come across as SO COOOOOL and HIP...yet he just comes across as a stupid, corny fool...

That is my biggest issue is that it's so heavily Christian, which is okay...but they have to smack you over the head with it. Where in the end everything wraps up & fixes itself juuuuust perfectly, because everyone knows that real life ALWAYS has a clean, positive, happy outcome! Where the doubters come to have Faith & blah blah blah... Especially if the people are Christian lol. (Sarcasm...)

As much as I am bashing it for that...IF you're able to get over that aspect, it's actually a really cool little film! The man who plays Paul, you'll love him!! I would say if you're Christian, you'll really enjoy it...if you're not a devout Christian...you might just enjoy it for the idea, & I think any kids under 17, over 7-8 would find enjoyment in it.

It's NOT for people who have very serious questions, nor is it for those that enjoy the Faith films that are based more on real life, & real humans (Passion of the Christ, Paul: Apostle of Christ, arisen, Doubt, Silence etc etc.) this is more in the vein of your Kirk Cameron movies...as much as Kirk thinks he's an actor as equally as a Christian, he's not...

Ummm...

Like the African American guy said, "Are you serious?" Was this a college school project? Seems and feels so. I gave it 3 stars for effort, effort to make us laugh, as in "The rabbi doesn't eat pork." And at "delusions of grandeur" is where I stopped watching...oy!

Better than most

1st so called religious movie that I really enjoyed in a long time. Stayed ( or staid) in line with the Bible. Was Philip teleported, when God snatched him away? I know this movie is fiction, but also know that with God all things are possible.

Also really nice not having these so called big time actors that annoy me with their acting .

In some measure, this film represents an interogation to the viewer about the manner to assume his faith. It is half religious film, half fantasy, and its two great virtues are the work of Robert Cohn and the wise use of a familiar recipe . A film starting from an often used question - if The Christ comes back, what world discovers Him ?

Maybe, just an useful film.

First, for the questions proposed.
