The final trailer of Maidaan—dexterously cut, let us state t right away—is every bit a cliffhanger in the most ruminative definition of the word. Cliffhanger , although it doesn’t try to hang on to any cliff except the one that materializes when a writer and director, not to mention the lead actor, know their job .
And boy, do they do it well!
Ajay Devgn turns 55 on April 2 even as the trailer of his new film demonstrates that he is easily among the best star-actors of the country. In Maidaan, we can see he plays a man in his 50s. His body language conveys exactly what his character is meant to: this is a man who has devoted his life to sports, football to be more precise, and is aging with grace and aplomb.
And yes, Devgn looks like a footballer in Maidaan: lean athletic sinewy and focussed. Which,...

Film CommentaryAs pertinent as it is to point out a flawed political statement or cinematic choice, are we equally conscious of the limitations many directors operate within and attempt to break free from?Bharathy SingaravelIt’s been a week since Jhund released, marking Marathi director Nagraj Manjule’s Bollywood debut. Amitabh Bachchan’s outsider role in...

Mumbai, March 27 (Ians) Legal hassles and controversies never leave our filmmakers. Even as cinemas open and the biggies gear up for release, and Ott spreads its base, a host of new legal woes have emerged for various film and web series makers.
The latest to face the fire is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Gangubai Kathiawadi", starring Alia Bhatt. The film has got into a legal mess. One of the four children of Kathiawadi, Babu Rawji Shah, has filed a criminal defamation case against the film.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan finds it embarrassing to be tagged as the 'Star of The Millennium' saying the title came his way due to a computer error perhaps, and insists he is just an "ordinary artiste". It was in 1999 when the BBC honoured him with the title after an online survey, but Amitabh recalls it was his co-actor Govind Namdev, who told him that he was 'Star of The Millennium'. "But I never believed in it... There is one secret behind it. The BBC News, which conferred the honour on me, conducted an online survey where they asked people to vote for an actor whom they thought was the most popular in last 100 years. And because of that online survey thing, some votes came my way and I feel it's a computer error and there is no truth behind it. I feel so embarrassed when people label me with these tags.
