Mr. Iglesias Review
maerongraykim4 December 2021
For educators, parents, and students looking for 30-minute comedic bursts within the context of the United States public education system, Mr. Iglesias is a fitting television series to ease that itch. With characters who play directly to American stereotypes, the Netflix comedy seeks to address hot topics, such as censorship, equal opportunity, and privacy, through the satirical interactions between faculty and students at Woodrow Wilson High School. It must be noted that this television series is not for the faint of heart: conversations are laced with stereotypical insults and quips. Educators and pupils alike participate in trading one-liners, brimming with the inherent bias and prejudice of the characters. Meant to serve as comedy fodder for the audience, the comments may come across flippant because the underlying motifs of racism, sexism, and discrimination are not always crticized and condemned by the characters.

Out of 10 stars, the television series sits at a comfortable 8. The controversial issues at the very center of each episode serve as conversation fodder for viewers who seek to argue and support their opinions of the aforementioned topics. Episode 5, "Everybody Hates Gabe," an episode about equal opportunity, illustrates the arguments and responses of faculty and students through an authentic, albeit corny, depiction. Speaking upon how the various communities and factions of the student body may be treated disproportionately, outspoken students and staff serve as fictional representatives of advocates for equal opportunity. As mentioned prior, due to a myriad of inappropriate comments shared and gone unnoticed and unaddressed, 2 stars were taken off from the review. Otherwise, Mr. Iglesias is certainly a satisfying television series for light-hearted humor about the realities of American society.
