Montgomery Clift had a privileged and sheltered childhood with his siblings. They were well-traveled and privately tutored in many things including languages. That's why "Monty" grew up fluent in French and German. But unlike his brother and sister who pursued higher education in prestigious colleges, he studied stage acting instead, and had his Broadway debut at age 15. He won his first 15 fights as a pugilist, 12 of them via knockout, before losing to a future heavyweight contender via close split-decision.
