The arrival of the fierce Madeleine.
Sleepin_Dragon21 February 2019
Despite the obvious return to form from Ruby, which means providing more irritation then those mosquitos, I thought this episode was very good. After the serious nature of the previous two part story, the lighter tone was definitely welcome, although I do wish they'd tone Ruby down a little.

A true locked room mystery, with clues and suspects galore, I really enjoyed the solution, back to the original premise of the show.

The added distraction of the fabulous new Sergeant investigating Jack was great, very impressed by Madeleine, sign her up!

Another very good episode. 8/10

Great, but flawed
jaywalkeruk-125 April 2022
I love DiP. I have done from the start and each time there's a new Inspector I'm sure I won't like them as much as the previous one but I do. However, some of the glaring errors annoy me even though it's fiction and this episode was no exception. The story was fine and, as usual, the explanation was great with Jack doing his "thing." That said, the investigation of Jack as Florence's SIO was ridiculous. He'd never have been investigated by a lower ranking officer. Her attitude to a superior officer in the way she spoke to him was insubordination and he should have reprimanded her. I know it was the run up to the uninteresting Madeleine joining the team but even so...

Madeleine's from internal affairs
safenoe21 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Madeleine Dumas arrives from Paris to investigate what went on in the previous episode. Jack feels he may end up sent packing back to the UK, so we're kind of on tenterhooks. The radio station murder kept me guessing until the end for sure.

It's a shame there hasn't been any reference to Catherine Bordey's mayoralty. Why not? Catherine is the Mayor of Saint Marie, but there's been no subplots involving this, and none of the characters ever refer to her as Mayor.

One thing I don't understand
kbola-2865028 June 2021
I like the show despite the ludicrous plot and murder rate of Saint Marie being as high as Midsomer County but one thing that was never clarified is they show the airport as being a small one with little prop planes but in some episodes it has long distance flights to Lohdon, Paris and America.

The annual music episode
victoriajayne-3328016 March 2020
A lighter episode than the last two parter even if st Marie seems to be the murder capital of the world after Midsummer ...the involvement of the internal affairs officer added to the entertainment and with tedious obviousness her being an attractive women got the old male reviewers in a muck sweat ..again ..ugh.

I'm confused.
eddie-perkins27 June 2020
The fictional Saint Marie is a British Overseas Territory. Why is the the IA officer French and based in Paris? Was this explained somehow and I just missed it? For some reason this annoys me far more than the silly, contrived plots and far fetched solutions that the show is known for. I've overlooked those issues enjoyed it as light hearted entertainment but I'm having trouble getting past this.

Why is a report for the French government written in English?
Miles-1014 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The reviewer jaywalkeruk-1 ("Great, but flawed") makes a solid criticism that the DS from Paris should not be of a lower rank than DI Mooney. That would be the most damning complaint if only she were not also FROM PARIS? I'm with reviewer eddie-perkins who wrote "I'm confused". Why is an internal affairs investigator from Paris looking into Florence's shooting and evaluating Jack's performance? BTW if Madeleine is writing a report to the French government, why is she shown to be writing it in ENGLISH?

Even if there were an explanation for any of this (I suppose that Florence was seconded from French Guadeloupe in the first place), why does a representative of France have any say about the status of a British police officer employed by a British colony? The show has made clear that the fictional island of Sainte Marie was a French possession a long time ago but is now governed solely by the UK.

The show's writers apparently need two things and won't compromise on either: There must be tension regarding Detective Inspector Mooney's fate, AND it must be at the hands of yet another sexy French Detective Sergeant. Why do the detective sergeants on this show always have to be sexy and French? (This is obviously like asking why they usually also have to wear appealingly tight hot pants--though DS Madeleine does not do so, at least not in this installment.)

The murder plot is somewhat clever. I should have seen it coming but did not. The murderer is always too clever by half, and the DI always figures out that the apparent time of the murder or sequence of events has been shifted to create the illusion of impossibility. Any other inspector--except for the ones routinely sent to Sainte Marie--would miss these shifts, and the murderer would get away with it.

A fine one!

The eighth season of "Death in Paradise" has been very up and down for me. It started being very average with first three episodes, but then became more investing with "Frappe Death Day" and especially "Beyond the Shining Sea being wonderful. "Murder on the Airwaves" is however not a great episode. It is a perfectly enjoyable entry to the series, though nothing else.

Let's take a look at the good aspects first, shall we?

. The episode looks and sounds good. The acting's solid all around. Ardal O'Hanlon continues to be joy as Mooney and Madeleine seems like an awesome character. Can't wait to see more of her!

. The murder mystery was compelling enough with a good premise and intrigue. The solution, I thought, was satisfying as well.

But...

. There are moments, where the humor is extremly awkward and cringe-worthy to the point when the viewer is feeling too uncomfortable.

. Also felt, like some plotpoints of the mystery had already been done in previous "Death in Paradise" episodes and in those times the writing was stronger. The story took a while to unravel itself for me as well..

Overall, a fine mystery.

The series annual-music 🎶 -murder-episode.
katherinemaudsley-5932223 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In this music based-murder episode, we've got some great reggae music going but, wish we could have had Dezzie Dixon/ Terence Maynard character having a longer seen role, he was cool. This was an easy one to figure out based on similar, past series episodes. But, this epi seemed slightly rushed, and chaotic too. So, is the Parisian investigation officer here to stay and will she be sending DI Jack Mooney packing back to the U.K.? I've never understood why the commissioner hasn't liked Jack, but, will he finally step up for him after the fallout from his last case w. Florence? And, what's going to happen next episode, since no one "officially" has replaced Florence?

Murder on the Airwaves

Warning: Spoilers
DS Madeleine Dumas joins the team as the obvious 'Florence replacement' and her abrupt ways didn't endear her to me. Hopefully she'll grow on me like Ruby has.

It's not the best episode of the series, I think we've seen variations on this idea before, and the resolution was perhaps a bit too complicated for its own good.

Episode 8.7
Prismark1028 February 2019
There is a clone factory somewhere in paradise. It seems to produce attractive Detective Sergeants.

DS Madeleine Dumas has been sent from Paris to investigate Jack Mooney over Florence's shooting. She is not impressed with his shambolic behaviour which she thinks pervades over to the others in the police station. If her report finds Mooney at fault for Florence getting shot, he will back in London.

Mooney and the team are investigating the death of a local radio DJ who got shot live on air. Dezzie Dixon was alone in the studio, his assistant and producer were outside getting something to eat.

Essentially a locked room mystery which was not that taxing but it was enjoyable enough with plenty of reggae songs. I have a feeling that Dumas will be sticking around for a while.
