Extraordinary Documentary on Preserving Art, History and Culture
rccantow24 June 2022
National Museum is a carefully conceived and constructed documentary that focuses on the care and preservation of a wide range of art held at The National Musum of Ukraine, located in Kyiv.

It is is a haunting, cinematic tribute, call it a love song - lovingly made, of a national treasure (the museum) and the efforts to care for and preserve the art and likewise, the rich history that it reflects. There are suggstive, masterful moments of dircting, editing, lighting and camera work that honor the museum's meaning, value and importance to its audience. It is a beautiful testament, celebratory, moving and even sad in relation to the trauma of the war in Ukraine.

A wonderful film ...

A wonderful film on the National Museum of Ukraine, Ukrainian art - classic and contemporary - and the effort to preserve and display it.

The film captures the relationship between art, curators, and audience in a uniquely beautiful way. Its pacing allows viewers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the paintings, to live with the art for a little while, and then relate them to our times. The portraits of the visitors looking at portraits are breathtaking.

Especially moving that through the older works (the icons!) the film tells the history of Ukraine, showing the world that Ukraine always had its very own independent culture and identity.
