Jake Johnson is getting behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with Self Reliance. This film finds the main character playing a dangerous game for a lofty sum of cash, but at what price? Hulu acquired the U.S. rights to Self Reliance after a competitive bid with MRC and Paramount Global Content. In addition to directing the feature, Johnson also stars alongside Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire, Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Brady.
Self Reliance revolves around Tommy, a man who is offered a million dollars to participate in a game in which hunters try to kill him. The catch? They can only attack him when he’s alone. Thinking he’s found a loophole, the man attempts to bring his friends and family into the deal. However, problems arise when no one in his party thinks the game is real.

Despite releasing a retrospective documentary about her astounding eight-decade career, Rita Moreno shows no signs of slowing down. The 90-year-old Egot winner has reinvented herself many times over the years, but she dons yet another beguiling disguise as a psychopathic physics teacher in the dark teen comedy “The Prank.” Her sleek black Cadillac may be an obvious nod to Cruella de Vil, but Moreno’s severe Mrs. Wheeler looks more like a Bond villain in her precise grey bob and black leather gloves.
Most of “The Prank” revolves around two squeaky-voiced teenagers: floppy-haired overachiever Ben (Connor Kalopsis) and ditzy-but-brilliant slacker Tanner (Ramona Young), broadly sketched types we’ve seen a million times. The outsized caricatures work when it comes to Mrs. Wheeler, whose slight stature collides playfully with the outsized fear she instills in her students. But the tired Gen Z tropes and cheesy one liners suck the life out...

Whether you love the Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy “Over the Top” or think, “eh, maybe I don’t need a Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy in my life,” there’s a new option that will be more appealing: Maureen Bharoocha’s “Golden Arm,” which that it should please every stripe of arm wrestling comedy fan. Aided by a go-for-broke performance by star Mary Holland — consistently the best thing in many projects, and here finally getting the lead role she deserves — “Golden Arm” might be destined for the same sort of cult status as Sly’s version, and that’s just fine for this charming indie comedy.
Written by screenwriting duo Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly, who make their feature debut with the film, “Golden Arm” ably contorts the usual sports film tropes — an unlikely contender, a big final match, plenty of personal demons — into a new take on the genre.

From the first impression, this looks like Over the Top and Glow were tossed in a blender to see what might come out, and somehow it held together long enough to make a movie. That’s not why we’ll be thinking about seeing this, since the same kind of reason applies to Golden Arm as applied to Over the Top so many years ago; it just looks like it might be slightly interesting enough to watch it once and then say “Okay, I’m good”. That’s kind of how it feels even if the story is different since Melanie, who starts out

Distribution and sales company Utopia Media has acquired worldwide rights for feature documentary “Moments Like This Never Last,” about artist Dash Snow.
Born Dashiell Alexander Whitney Snow, Dash Snow rejected a life of privilege to make his own way as an artist on the streets of downtown New York City in the late 1990s. Developing from a notorious graffiti tagger into an international art star, he documented his drug- and alcohol-fuelled nights with the surrogate family he formed with friends and fellow artists Ryan McGinley, Dan Colen and Kunle Martins before his death by heroin overdose in 2009.
The film, a personal, up-close depiction of the late artist, is directed by photographer and filmmaker Cheryl Dunn (“Everybody Street”), drawing from Snow’s body of work. It uses archival footage to capture his brief life of reckless excess and creativity. It features artist Dan Colen, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, filmmaker Larry Clark and art curator Neville Wakefield,...

This was to be a month of celebration and joy.
Just a few weeks ago, I was supposed to debut my feature film Golden Arm during the first weekend at SXSW. I imagined sitting in a rowdy theater packed with comedy fans and movie buffs. I’d occasionally glance at the film’s stars Mary Holland and Betsy Sodaro, hoping they were as proud as I am about how incredible they are.
