Rolling Stone Realness
owen-watts25 August 2020
Premiering on Facebook Watch and from heavyweight investigative documentary maker Bernardo Ruiz and Rolling Stone - this slick and engrossing (but in slight chunks, likely because of the platform) doc has an impressive roster of contributors and serves as solid baseline to underline the main narratives around the arrest, escapes and final trial of drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

Being a self-described "work of investigative journalism" it doesn't really present any simplistic narratives, doesn't do a great deal of interrogation and the bare responses of some of the contributors raises quite serious questions. Which is fair enough - and it's rather impressively stout. The shame is this is a subject that would've benefitted from a "deep dive" rather than the abridged social media friendly pieces may have presented it better. It certainly goes about it with a level of heady seriousness that the subject deserves without drifting into clichéd waters.
