The Outrage (1964)
4/10
What were they thinking?
1 March 2010
I am no actor, and I realize scenes are frequently shot out of sequence. But don't the actors have some sort of inkling as to how poor a picture is while they are making it?

I've never been one for "flashback" movies, but this one with several different versions of the flashback is just too much.

There were a couple good pieces of acting, such as when Bloom accused her husband of cowardice, but they were too few to carry the movie. The last 8 to 10 minutes were more like 3 Stooges/Laurel & Hardy slapstick comedy sliding down a waterfall into a pond and spitting water...c'mon!

I did enjoy the scenery around Tucson, and the music was pretty good, also. The rest of it left me scratching my head. This is a movie I had timer-recorded to DVD and did not watch for quite a while since recording it, so it is in my collection. I have real doubts it will ever get another watch by me.

And what's up with the baby? Did the writers just say "Hey, this ought to work for something?"

It's a pity, too, because with de Silva, Newman, Bloom, Robinson...these are actors I really like. They could have made a much better movie.

I rarely give less than 5 stars, but this one only rates 4 from me.

Deadwood (2004–2006)
Typical HBO
21 March 2004
This looks like as though it is going to be a pretty good series, but it must cause pain to the writers to go two sentences without vulgarity. It's not that I am offended...it just seems to lack creativity when so much is used.

The scenery is great, even though it is shot in California and not South Dakota.

Keith Carradine as Hickok is great...all he needs to do to scare 'em is to look at 'em.

Powers Boothe will be a plus. Ever since his part in Tombstone, he has been one of my favorite actors.

Traffic (2004)
Good Grief!!!
26 January 2004
PLEASE!!! Is it not possible to make a show anymore that does NOT have the "amateur" camera movement. In my heart, I KNOW the anti-jiggle technology built into cameras now would enable a 5 year old to shoot steady shots.

They probably offer "Jiggly Camera 101" in film school now.

And why, please why, do we need 7-10 different camera shots of someone's face in rapid succession for a scene in which 1 or 2 would do nicely? Editor/splicers need the work, I guess.

I did not care for the movie, so I expected just about what I got from the mini series. Very little.

Glad they are repeating Dennis Miller's new show, which is running against this. Wifey wanted Traffic. She pays the bill, so guess what we watched.

Needed A Better editor
14 July 2002
I am fortunate enough to live close to 2 outdoor theatres. I saw The Bourne Identity at one of them.

It was enjoyable to me. I liked the plot and I thought the acting was good also. Some of the action shots were a little grim, but I attribute this to what I would grade as LOUSY editing.

I don't know why some movie editors think there is some law against developing more than a 30 second scene. The unending stacatto "MTV Music Video" type editing of 3 second shots really irritated me. The music they used didn't help much either.

I think with the proper editing and music, this would have been an 8 out of 10. In stead, I give it a 6 1/2.

It is a joy to watch Matt Damon at work. For my money, he is destined to be one of the days greatest actors.

Hollow Man (2000)
More like "Hollow" ending (no spoilers)
6 August 2001
This movie kept my utmost attention all the way through....well...almost. I was very impressed with the computer effects used in the disappearance and reappearance of the gorilla and Kevin Bacon. Yes, the plot-line has been used before...invisible man; mad scientist and all...but the effects used gave this one a great twist. But THEN we get to the last 10 or 12 minutes. It strikes me that there HAD to be a CONSPIRACY of minds to come up with so many silly twists and cliche's. I wonder if the medical industry knows the miraculous properties of duct tape. Elizabeth Shue did a very nice job in this film, but from the point she had her "McGuyver moment," I knew it was downhill from there. Just like Speed 2, the ridiculous ending nearly ruined the rest of the movie for me. I'm glad I waited for Cinemax to show it. I would have been irritated if I had paid 8 bucks to see it. But then that's my opinion...I could be wrong.
