Fubar (2002)
Spinal Tap meets the Blair Witch?
I was lucky enough to attend the Calgary opening of FUBAR with the film makers in attendance. The film is a lot of what you would expect, a couple of long hairs with mid two-digit IQ's stumble through life shot gunning beers and trying to get laid.
It opens into something much more at about the 30-minute point. Not to be too much of a spoiler, but one of the "bangers" is forced to face his own mortality, while refusing to change his lifestyle. It's wickedly funny and somewhat disturbing at the same time. Not at all the light weight throwaway film people might dismiss it for, FUBAR is a tight well produced piece of work.
By the way, I never applauded at the end of a movie until FUBAR, and there really is a town called High River just south of Calgary.
The Way of the Gun (2000)
tons of guns...good dialogue, and the best acting in years
By far the best movie of the summer, its truly a shame it was pushed back to September as it can stand up to any of the other "Blockbusters" Hollywood shoved down our throats this year. Ryan Phillipe and Benico del Toro did an amazing job of saying far more with their expressions and body language than was said with words...a stunning performance from the both of them. James Cann scared the hell out of me. The man is just imposing as hell.
With those 3 actors and the coolest car chase ever(not really a car chase per se, but I won't spoil it here)makes for the most unique "shoot 'em up" film since the "Dogs" hit the screen.
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
perhaps the best 45 minutes of film this year...but its a 2 hour movie
I think its time that Hollywood took a cue from porn films. Sometimes we don't need 90 minutes of plot and character development. Lets just get right to the point of this film. Car chases and car crashes. The ending sequences with all the squealing tires and smashing steel was the whole reason I went to this film, not to see Nic cage get cozy with Ms. Jolie and make nice nice with his little brother.
Very enjoyable for about 45 minutes...so don't give it too much thought if yer late getting to the theatre, you really won't miss much in the first hour or so.
