Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Incredible. A true masterpiece.
Incredible! What a movie! This is pure Tarantino, it's as original and as ground breaking as Pulp Fiction.
It's a long film, but was so captivating and enjoyable that it felt like half the time. I went in expecting to enjoy this movie, despite hearing some criticisms, and it exceeded all my expectations.
This is a film that will instantly be in most peoples Top Ten, and it's personally the best cinema experience I have had since The Dark Knight.
It is a very atmospheric film, and the director is at the top of his game.
The dialogue and the performances are all top class. Brad Pitt carries his role effortlessly.
It is clever, surprising, tense, exciting, funny and very rewarding!
See it!
RocknRolla (2008)
Sadly disappointing....
I loved Lock Stock and Layer Cake (Directed by Matthew Vaughn), and even more so Snatch, so was really looking forward to rocknrolla, whilst trying to ignore the last couple of Guy's movies...
rocknrolla is essentially Lock Stock for the first half, then Layer Cake for the second half. The only really entertaining scenes come right in the middle of the movie. The cast is great, most of the characters are very good, and some of the filming and editing is very clever.
However it all feels a bit lazy, the script and plot are just a rushed rehash of Lock Stock and Layer Cake, some of the characters and "twists" are just there to fill in and make no sense, and add nothing, and ultimately if you are a fan of this genre of film you will feel let down.
A shame for the public, and a shame for the good cast, I think!
If you haven't seen Lock Stock or Layer Cake, you'll probably enjoy it more!!!
In Bruges (2008)
Cracking!
Great film! I watched this in a packed movie theater in the USA, and although parts of the dialogue are a bit "near the mark" for the American audience, and certain jokes are aimed squarely at the British / Irish audience, it went down very well.
A very original take on a good story, all performances were excellent. The script can seem a little cheesy at first, but once it gets flowing it's very natural and very well written, and performed seamlessly.
Colin is excellent, probably his best role I would say! The only slight negative is that 'Arry, Ralph Fiennes' character, is rather too similar to Don Logan, Ben Kingsley's character in Sexy Beast. However, this isn't a bad thing as both characters work well, it's just a shame I couldn't stop myself comparing them.
My wife and I really enjoyed, it's very, very funny throughout, with moments of real subtle, dry comedy genius, plus moments of in your face humour. It's also bittersweet, romantic, violent, briefly offensive to some, occasionally shocking and upsetting, but hugely enjoyable and very well done.
Overall a very strong 9 / 10 for a great independent movie! Deserves a lot more success than I expect it will get!
The Departed (2006)
I was expecting to see the movie of the year......
I love Martin Scorcese, Goodfellas and Mean Streets are two of my favourite films, and I highly rate every known actor on the cast!!! Given the reviews, trailers and rumours I had heard about this movie (one even bettering Goodfellas!!!!) I was very excited, although I was careful not to over-anticipate! The film opens very well, and as soon as the first installment of the soundtrack started (a throwback to Goodfellas) I was smiling broadly! The film was very good, but I felt it could have been a cinematic masterpiece, which I don't think it is. I have seen the original Infernal Affairs, but didn't want to try and compare them, I wanted to see this as an original film. The story is a good one, the characters are good but are developed very quickly, I felt the opening hour was just a quick rush of the characters, trying to squeeze everything in. The performances, however, were generally very good. I felt the screenplay lacked something, though. Jack Nicholson's character didn't really work for me, a lot of things didn't make sense (no spoilers!!!) and especially with his character, it all felt a bit clichéd. If anything, I felt the story and script may have been a little simplistic, there weren't really any twists and there was no suspense. There were a dozen great scenes, but they were well spaced! I didn't like the way the filmmakers felt they had to make the story so transparent and obvious, but that seems a general theme in Hollywood now.... I would definitely see this film again, hopefully I can enjoy it more, and would recommend it, but I feel a little disappointed that this wasn't the epic crime film I was hoping for.... I'd actually give it 6.5........
Face (1997)
One of the best London gangster movie of recent years......
I saw Face at the cinema on Leicester Square upon release. I strongly agree with previous reviews that this movie was definitely overlooked at the cinema, which is strange as it has a strong cast. I have only seen this movie shown on TV once and the DVD is quite hard to find in the US. Face contains solid performances from a cast that features many famous actors, plus some very familiar faces from British TV and lower budget movies. The movie has great, realistic, believable script, with a twisty plot that keeps you entertained to the last scene. One of Robert Carlyle best performances, plus Ray Winstone (as ever) and even Damon Albarn are on great form. Portrays a very gritty side of London, in the rain. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of the British crime genre, not to be missed! 8 out of 10!
Entourage (2004)
Great TV!
Excellent television! I stumbled across Entourage at the beginning of the third season, and have bought the previous two seasons to catch up! There are not many show's that I want to watch religiously, from the first episode, but Entourage really captured my imagination, immediately, and I am hooked! Four friends, one of whom is building a movie career, leave NY for LA and the show follows the daily dilemmas, the parties, and the down to earth, tongue in cheek attitude of "the boy who done good!" Although the plot is a fairytale for most of us, the show is very unpretentious and is very well made, with an excellent, unusually realistic script, great cast, great performances, great cameos, and above all very believable story lines (for the topic!!). The soundtrack is probably the best I have heard, credit to the music department for finding truly appropriate tracks! A show that you can enjoy from the first moment you watch it, plus a lifestyle, and a camaraderie, that most of us dream of! 9/10!
