I'd like my 106 minutes back
21 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I think I liked this movie better when I saw the same plot line with Steven Seagal. Or Jean Claude Van Dam. Or Ahnold. Or fill in the blank action star. At least then you expect the celluloid equivalent of a cheeseburger & fries. This movie (it doesn't qualify to be called a film) was one of the worst I've ever seen. Asking the audience to buy that this white collar executive turns (successful) vigilante is just too much to ask. Especially when played by Kevin Bacon, who is a very good actor; just tragically miscast. If the character had had some sort of police or military background, maybe. And that's a big maybe. In reality the first bad guy he went after would have turned him into a sad statistic. This movie was a waste of talent and beneath all those involved.

Delightful summer fun
5 July 2006
This film is predictable and a bit cliché but I absolutely loved it. It's not going to change your life and it's not going to be nominated for any Oscars but if you're in the mood for a light comedy with several thigh-slapping laughs, this is the film for you. Anne Hathaway displays her range as an actress following her brilliant performance in Brokeback Mountain. The inimitable Meryl Streep is flawlessly believable as an assistant-devouring fashion shark. Stanley Tucci is divine as a modern fairy godmother who helps develop Andy into someone who can swim with those sharks. But Emily Blunt steals the show. Her long-suffering shallow character of Emily rounds out a wonderful cast of characters. All in all, a terrific summer popcorn movie.

105 minutes of my life I'll never have back
5 July 2006
Kevin Kline's character is the only saving grace of this otherwise disjointed, pointless film and even his brilliance couldn't save it. I read several of the other comments waxing philosophically about the deep beauty of this film and could only think that my viewing companion and I were the only ones able to see that the emperor was wearing no clothes. Just because it's Altman and has a star-studded cast, doesn't automatically guarantee brilliance. On the contrary, this film appears to rest on its laurels knowing that some poor suckers will see it based solely on its credits. Horrible! Stay at home and watch paint dry instead!

Brilliant!
22 September 2003
First let me say that I am a long-time Kiefer fan (and yes, I too, think that 24 is the best show on television!) but that doesn't bias my opinion of this film. This film is one of the best I've seen this year. It is a quiet, beautiful character study which doesn't rely upon or need glitz or flash. The depths of these characters could not be explored without the even, thoughtful performances of Sutherland and Sedgwick. I watched the DVD twice as a rental then looked high & low to find it for sale with no luck until I convinced my local video store to sell a rental copy to me. Don't miss an opportunity to see this film!

Another Brilliant Performance From Mr. Spacey
10 September 2003
I don't know why this film didn't do better at the box office - it was simply brilliant. Kevin Spacey is one of only a handful of actors who can always be depended upon to deliver a masterful performance of a deep, complex, and interesting character. The film is well acted and directed with a beautiful score. The plot is magnificent with a series of twists that do not disappoint.

I want my 2 hours back
28 May 2003
What a dud! Even the tiniest actions in this movie are telegraphed in the plot. There's no sympathy for any of the characters - they're vicious murderers who are, at times, so stupid that it's a miracle they've survived to adulthood (i.e. making your great escape leaving your wallet behind or dressing in the coat & hat of the person every thug in Hell's Kitchen is looking to kill). I wish I had those 2 hours of my life back - I'd watch grass grow or paint dry instead.
