I've watched every Columbo episode that was made and Try and Catch Me most definitely ranks as one of the highlights in the franchise. The chemistry between Peter Falk's Lt and Ruth Gordon's Abigail Mitchell is sublime, and the viewer can easily sympathise with the Mitchell character. Gordon adds a sense of emotion and sensitivity to her role as the inevitable killer, and is instantly likeable despite carrying out that dirty deed (strengthened by a scene where Columbo is speaking at a convention in which he talks about how he can like and respect a murderer, albeit naturally not for what they did), while Mariette Hartley's sly role as Abigail's assistant Veronica is another highlight also.
Other reviewers mentioned the music in this edition, and this is certainly a strong aspect: probably the best in the series. I've always said that music can actually tell the story without the need for too much dialogue, and it most certainly works in this. I can see why it received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement.
It's hard not to like Try and Catch Me: it contains the usual mixture of seriousness and humour that made the Columbo series a success, but also adding more simply because of Gordon's fantastic sprightly performance!! 10/10
