Abducted in Plain sight
30 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. I always enjoy when the entire SVU squad is involved in a case. Over the years your start to see how it is important for great team when they operate as a family because they know each other so well - which plays into a scene with Captain Benson and Det Rollins.

That aside -- it was a fairly solid episode where a religious zealot grooms and kidnaps a young girl as part of a vision from God. As the story unfolds you see how the predator has manipulated both victim and family using religion as the weapon to build trust.

There were a couple scenes and rhetoric that hit home and ripped from my own headlines being raised in the church and seeing how predators use religion and rhetoric to groom and use a congregation.

Great episode. Give it a watch.

Believing in one's truth
25 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Law & Order SVU has been a favorite of mine for years. But every once in awhile there is an episode moves my emotions unexpectedly.

This is the story of a prize fighter who is assulted just before his big return fight in the ring from a shoulder injury. The episode becomes the usual whodunnit of course and the production value and script, though a little twisty, holds together. The regular cast as always is amazing on a chase scene in this episode has some amazing editing to add to the tension of the chase. Bravo.

But it was the end of the episode where the victim reveals his truth to the world that struck a chord with me. As a gay man myself who came out after my 30s after growing up in the Midwest it definitely resonated with me. And I would say it is still difficult sometime to reveal my truth, because you never feel completely safe in how folks will react. I'm not afraid to share who I am and I am proud of who I am because it is just a part of what makes me who I am. I agree with the fighter when he says I am a fighter... I am a warrior. I couldn't be but moved my the scene. Thank you Law & Order SVU.

An actors episode
10 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love the series. And every so often there is an episode where the guest stars acting is clearly of note and caught my attention. I actually wish there was an Emmy nod of this one, if anything for the pastor's wife, portrayed by. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Also of note here is def the deputy chief, with a reoccurring role by the actor, Demore Barnes. And kudos to the Pastor as well portrayed by Roger Cross. And kudos to the writers for creating these great characters.

Everything about this episode is entrancing. And ripped from the headlines without beating you over the head with it.

If you haven't already, please give this one a watch. Dare you not to be moved just a little by episode's end.

Hit a nerve
18 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
On a re watch of the episode "Branded" it was definitely more emotional this time around. Maybe I had fallen asleep watching it late the first time. LOL The second watch had me intrigue, though I kinda guessed the premise in the 1st 1/2 of the episode. It was the second 1/2 of the episode that resonated and struck a chord and even brought some tears.

It was the reality of the situation that led to the initial attacks in this episode.

Sadly due to the triggering reality, the same types of things still play out and our buried today in our society. I don't want to give anything away regarding the story but it definitely brought me to tears when you think about the safety of our children both girls and boys in a world that increasingly sexualizes all that we see and we are often helpless to try and protect them.

As far as the cast. Great supporting cast. This episode brings in a new DA who seem to fit in nicely with the cast. And like some reviewers pointed out, Olivia passion surpassed her job as detective, but I didn't see a problem. I mean especially since it is just a TV show. She is often the voice of the viewer. I enjoyed it.

This one goes to the supporting cast. especially John Savage
5 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This one definitely left its mark you our conscious once it was over. So much reality and angst throughout without giving to much away. As the story unfolds in the 43 minutes you are sucked into this story and mystery of the crime. Even the opening of this episode steered away from the unusual bystanders find a victim - detectives arrive to scene formula. You already get a feeling from the start that this one is going to be different.

Probably one of my favorite best supporting casts in any of the seasons. But my favorite was the portrayal of our villain awaiting deathrow execution. Mr. Savage's acting was probably the most reserved yet one of the creepiest I have seen on the show. Watch it for him and the always engaging Mariska (Oliva B). This episode hits all the emotions because it is steeped in the reality of the human condition and it effects to trauma. Watch this one!

Actually moved to tears during this finale
30 May 2022
The finale wrapped everything efficiently with a bit of real emotion. The acting, writing, and direction, tension were on point and I almost wished the episode was longer. There were a few surprises here as there as well tying in the closure of several story lines. And the closing of the third act hit an emotional string as it made me reflect on my relationship with my Dad. Unexpectedly powerful, for at least me. Enjoyed the episode and continuing to enjoy the series.

Sometimes Law & Order SVU takes you to a place of conscious and discussion
22 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was interesting I watched this episode today 11/21 we celebrate transgender remembrance for all those who lost their lives to violence and suicide to those in the transgender community.

And I know that as I watched this episode today it hit definitely touched my heart hard at the end. As well as the focus on the usual perception of sex work and workers. I thought the episode was outstanding both in the writing and the main guest stars. This was definitely one ripped from the headlines. I always enjoying watching an episode that sparks conversation after, in hopes that perceptions can be changed for the better. I commend you Law & Order SVU.

Brook Shields is pretty awesome - watch this one!
16 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly a pretty amazing episode. Brook Shields was perfect in her role. Even though it was obvious who the assailant was in this episode you were still drawn in. And Brook Shields in the role of grandmother to Noah was such a perfect match - it was easy to sympathize with her. Though I wished for a better outcome for all involved. Loved this one about what it means to be family.

One side note - there is some slight police brutality to one of the suspects, and I understand what was trying to be achieved - but the approach felt dated and over the top after our raw experiences in 2020.

Subtle familiar story but still relevant for larger discussion
11 October 2021
I noticed over time that on average viewers prefer more action packed tense story lines. I enjoy those and these types of stories as well. And though this was a she said/he said story line it touched on several relevant topical cultural mores of today as it relates to privileged, out of date perception in the face of the pressures of social media world, with the combination of the impacts of social pressures and bullying in school. How does one protect their child in a world that exposes them to everything everywhere on top of social pressures to fit in, driving their children's decision making at the cost of their future. And for the subject of rape how do we start to educate our children on what that means or having those difficut discussion with them as well as in our educational institutions. I thought it was a quite a provoking episode.

Sins of a father
13 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was not your typical SVU crime storyline. It focused on a crime that was committed within one of the detectives families. Some viewers will probably not enjoy SVU going off a case to delve into family drama. But I thought it was enjoyable and well done. Especially when it came to the relationship tug of war between Det. Amaro and his father (played by Armand Asnto who looks like he could actually be Tony's actual father).

I felt the painful impact of struggling to do what is right when it involves family. This felt rooted in a reality that exist out there in the world that we may not chose to expect as a we watch a tv show. And in the end it truly was a SVU case.

Unexpectedly emotional
14 August 2021
Watching this I thought it was fairly typical fare but midway as the team makes discovery, especially Finn, it takes a very deep emotional touching turn. Act 3 of this episode was well made and a tough watch for the conscious.

As always - amazing guest stars. Give it a watch.

One of those SVU episodes that stay with you way after the credits roll
11 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There are a few Law and Order SVU episodes that stay with you like this one.

I remember the first time I saw this one about sibling abuse. The direction in this episode what spot on focusing on the family more than then our detectives trying to figure out what's happening. This episode has a way of sneaking and in, causing a feeling of dread and claustrophobia as well as just creeping you out as the credits roll. It is rooted in reality in its portrayal, that makes it even scarier. The only other episode that has stuck with me like this one is "911"

See this one! Great episode. The acting, writing and direction were all on point here.

Every once in awhile a SVU episode is a little too dark but still relevant
17 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As always the guest cast is amazing, this one is no exception. This is another episode touches the subjects of racism and bullying. A little boy from family whose family is family is of the gypsy culture goes missing after school. The becomes the center of the story to find him. What unfolds in true SVU fashion is a time sensitive case to solve to find the adolescent boy in the streets of NYC. And as always through the twist and turns we learn an little something about another culture, jumping to conclusions based on cultural bias and opinions among the precinct and detectives was well as a sobering reality of our current society.

For some reason though this one seemed exceptionally tragic to me. And in the end makes you realize the importance of teaching children about love and compassion for humanity as a whole. And that as adults it is our responsibility to be that example.

A SVU Shakespearen tragedy
15 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Read the reviews after watching and disagree. No this is not your typical case to solve, with chase and fight scenes or a perfect episode. But this was definitely an actors episode and unfolds like a one act play. As the story unravels before with excellent couple that guest stars, there is part of you that wants a better outcome. I thought they amazing characters and I found them realistic and pained. To me this played out like a Shakespearean tragedy that could not be avoided. I enjoyed it.

In the hothouse world of BLM this episode was a standout
24 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Some great performances and writing here, as always. But even stronger was the underlying message and lens on of the justice system of law and order in the US.

This one for me was not just about the characters but what can be considered broken and "unstable" in the system and people effected by it. Rewatch it for those talking points. Several reviews discuss the dire ending, but can we deny that unfortunately it is what often plays in reality.

Relevant subject matter for discussion in 2021
15 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Initially i was conflicted by this episode because i didn't know how the message and meaning of this case was going to play out with regards to the struggle of sexual transition and possibly contributing to a stigma and hate towards these individuals in the end, not to mention adding to the stigma, the act of a crime. By the end it felt like it opened the door to conversation if anything which is important. I don't think the crime was in anyway justified but it gave the show the vehicle to examine the subject. The cast in this case was stellar as always.

The Practice: Target Practice (1999)
Season 3, Episode 17

Still valid unresolved topics explored when watching in the year 2021
24 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The practice was an award winning show back in the 90's and this episode is was of the reasons why. The focus of this episode in on the topic of "responsibility' in both story lines. This first being a case Jimmy and Lindsey defending a case for a couple against a gun manufacture for advertising semi-automatic guns that was used in the murder of their daughter. The second is one is where Eugene's son is accused of planning to distribute drugs found in his locker.

In the 45 min of the show we are giving two strong compelling storylines that confront the viewer with tough modern day arguments about influences and the choices we make in a free commerce trade society where money and greed is often the accelerant for the choices and decision we make.

It the main courtroom case, the couple who lost their daughter in a shooting where an automatic weapon was used. They are suing the gun manufacture for advertising and influencing the accessibility of these type of weapons to criminals for profit. They want the gun manufacture essentially to take responsibility for their action in not only the death of their daugther, but also how sales and marketing of a military assault rifles get in the hands of unlicensed individuals & criminals. And not to spoil the story, the couple is even presented with several deals with increased amounts to settle, but they stand their ground because they want the manufacture to change the way they do business and take responsibility for their actions. And that is the emotional impact of this storyline.

In the sub-storyline, Eugene's son is arrested for having drugs in his locker which is eventually admits to and planning to sell and it is revealed that being around the office where his father defends criminals, drug dealers was an influence to his son. The sons explains to his friend, what he could do to get away with selling without severe legal repercussions and make quick money. And Eugene and his estranged wife have difficult conversations around the influence and the son's actions.

In both storylines the main characters are African American and they are portrayed intelligently without the focus on race, which I find refreshing to see, especially for the time where that was not alway prominent on TV. And one of the reason the shows was ahead of its time. But at the same time, especially in 2020-2021 there is an underlying view of how Americans see race, epecially in the Eugene son story line, that still will influence the watch of this episode. {Please also watch Season 2 - ep 5: Fifth Degree - also very powerful)

The acting is first rate and compelling by the entire cast as always. And the writing in this episode is extraordinary. In combination with the cinematography choices, and well placed music, the combination of all is a compelling watch and conversation starter long after the credits began to roll. 9/10 stars all around.

This is my first review on this site. And I don't consider myself to be professional or even an amateur critic. I found "The Practice" was available during quarantine and started to rewatch, which was one of my favorite TV shows during my young adulthood. This episode was a stand out for me and still is. This episode predates Columbine and other school shootings, the shooting at the mall in Omaha NE, Sandy Hook, the Batman premier movie theater massacre, Las Vegas shooting and many more, which I found adds to the power of watching this episode.
